Home items are 'selling like hotcakes' ... wait, seriously? photo

Most of us may mock PlayStation Home as a waste of time and resources, but it's doubtful Sony cares that it spent two years working on a complete load of crap. The crap in question is raking it in, and Sony's pockets are lined with the results of selling pretend chairs for a dollar apiece.

Apparently, Home has generated more revenue for Sony in its first four days than the rest of the PSN did during its entire launch week. Somewhere out there, people are actually buying furniture for their piece of sh*t Second Life knock-off that took valuable R&D away from actual videogame products.

According to Susan Panico, Sr. Director of the Playstation Network with Sony, it's a small amount of obsessives generating a lot of money: "It's a classic 80/20 model, where 20% of your customers create 80% of your income," she boasts.

I'm shocked that people are even spending more than ten minutes of their life in Home. I downloaded it, installed it, and lasted maybe three minutes, not counting loading times. By the time I got to the second loading screen, I exited, deleted it from my hard drive and never looked back. I suppose if there are people crazy about Home for some insane, Satanic reason, I can't blame them for buying useless bits of digital garbage -- there's bugger-all else to do.

I enjoy Home solely for the ego boost. It's quite similar to going to Walmart at two in the morning for the express purpose of people watching. Something about witnessing all those chromosomal oddities makes me feel better about myself.

For how long Home has been in development, there should've been more content from launch - however, they had to test the servers to ensure demand could be supported with content being added over time.

I can understand why people may not be able to see the point in it at the minute, but without taking the time to see what it has to offer at least for now... well, just shows ignorance in my opinion.

I'm sure when more content is added, people will find plenty to do with their friends...!

I think (hope) that home is a clever way of eliminating people from existence, when a certain threshold amount of money has been spent on crap, your ps3 explodes, killing the user.

The avatars look a hell of a lot better than that shitty MS Avatar BS that rips off Nintendo's Mii's. At least my Home guy kinda looks like I look, and I don't have to pay Sony each time I want to Match make a game within this interface. I welcome home as a pleasant distraction from the $10 games that I DO WANT, but cannot afford currently. I also like that I can walk up to my friend in RL and we can (in an ideal Home environment) launch games that we both own. All without Macroshaft charging us the $7.99 a month it costs to play on Xbox live. So what if some of the stuff on there costs money?! it's FREE!
I hate comparing but again I come back to pointing my finger at the Xbox. You need to pay 100 MS points to get a gamer picture for the game you just bought!? Honestly, as a budget gamer I like this Home thing. it makes me think that Sony appreciates the people who buy their products.. (and I'm sick of everyone saying that "sony is in trouble because PS3's aren't selling" that's a Bullshit statement and it's loaded like a 50 lb bag holding 100lbs of shit.Sony doesn't JUST make PlayStations. How does Sony dominate MS? Let me count the ways! 1. They make televisions 2. they make Computers and laptops 3. they make bluray players 4. they make cameras 5. they make phones, 6. they make audio equipment including car radios, speakers, and home component systems. 7. they make cameras.

Sony isn't going out of business anytime soon.

As for MS? What else to they make other than software and the xbox hardware? Are they known for their kickass TV's? are they known for their xbox laughing at typical gamer abuse? Are they known for building COMPUTERS?! No.. They're known for writing the SOFTWARE for COMPUTERS. And often botching it up. They're known for opening a direct link to your wallet to withdraw a monthly fee to let you play on the internet with your friends.
Sony isn't asking you for money for home or even for signing into the PSN. Sony's on YOUR side, and you kick them when they give you more FREE SHIT.
Shame on you.

10/10 for the ad hominem uncounterable argument, Jim :P

I wish I hated it. I wish I loved it. Apathy is boring. But I did get a couple of hours fun out of logging as a chick with my mate and dancing together while hoards of horny dudes tried to pick us up. Particularly the moment where my friend said "I wonder if they know we're dudes?" and after an awefully long pause...... "WELL NOW WE DO" and watching them scatter like we were the plague.

HAHAHA

Sorry, but I have to agree that anyone who currently spends money in Home for something for their avatar rather than a tangible item or a game is a fool, but we all know the phrase about a fool and his money.

Am I glad that I'm not getting raped like XBox users are with monthly fees just to play on line? You bet. Do I appreciate that Sony has offered Home for free? Absolutely. I've downloaded all of the various Home areas, but I still think that it's a senseless waste of time -- at the moment. It's mind-boggling to think that people are actually shelling out money for things on Home at the current time.

There are a lot of incredibly stupid people. Home is a piece of shit Sims Online + 3D Chat program cross over wanna be, having avatars like Mii's or Thrii's (What I call 360's avatars) is one thing but this is garbage. Most of the time I see it there are literally just tons of people doing nothing but dancing in a group, what is so fun about that? Like I said people are stupid. That's all I have to say.

Just wait, Jim will think Microsoft is so smart when they make tons of money in NXE selling funny hats to people, but it's not with HOME. Jim, no one is forcing you to use Home, or buy anything. Remember, people buy horrible games like Wii Music in masses, so obviously there is a wide range of different tastes in how to spend their entertainment dollars.

I went into the Japanese home environment, and I can definitely see the potential. What's cool is when you jump into a themed room for a particular game, like the Everybody's Golf room. Instead of typing in a text based forum to try and find friends to play with, you can talk to them and find out if they are a tool (like Jim) before you add them to your friends list. Also, you can share/trade tips, and general thoughts with them in a more personal setting.

For being an optional and free service, it's absolutely rediculous the way these so called journalists are treating Home. Especially in it's infancy.

I don't think people are catching on to Jim's farce. It should be obvious that the way destructoid works is that beating up free user interfaces for PS3 gets views, just as praising paid 360 interfaces, regardless of which one is more useful or visually attractive.

I think home hits 3 kinds of people. Those who delete it and are for some reason angry it exists (maybe they don't have enough to be angry about, so they start just grabbing at pointless things). Those who don't care (me) but use it to hang out in the Destructoid Fan club and talk to my online friends occasionally (maybe I should change the name to something like Jay's Friend Club, to reflect Destructoid's hate of home?), and those who enjoy (OMG!!! People should NOT be allowed to enjoy things they enjoy!!) using it, and put money into it.

There you go. News of the century. Some people like things and some people don't. So what should I change our club name to? Any ideas?

Personally I don't mind home, I'm not spending hours in it like I would a game but I meet up with my friends, shoot the shit and some pool and such. Sure you have to ignore the idiots out there but you have to do that in real life too.

Then again from what I hear the European regions HOME pales in comparison to the US and Japanese version

I'll bet it's Sony's own employees or those that are forced to spend long periods of time in the environment (mods and so forth) that are generating all of this revenue.

I don't hate Home, nor do I love it. But if I had deleted it after only a few minutes, I wouldn't really consider myself qualified to write more than a few dozen words on it.

Hopefully it will become, as Wardrox says, useful and practical. I don't think it's there yet, as game launching was still not enabled last time I checked and chat options are thin. Plus I really don't get the whole virtual waiting-in-line thing. Can't Home just generate one always-open instance of every single player game?

Wait, didn't she say that it made more than the movie & video sales during the first week? Not DLC or games.

Which doesn't imply home is selling well if the video service was selling slow. The prices, video quality, as well as the fact that they limit the number of times you can download a title you bought (not rented); it's not surprising.

Spending real money on virtual things for your virtual character or virtual apartment in a virtual world, in these times of REAL economic uncertainty? Yes, that is an activity I will leave to some other moron. Home is such a colossal waste of time and money.

It's funny to see the Sony fanboys try to defend the whole PS3 fiasco. First defending the cell and blu-ray, along with the associated initial price, as being necessary to deliver a "true HD gaming experience for the hardcore gamer."

Now they're defending Home as some kind of system selling saving grace. Yeah, just what the hardcore gamer you tried to define as the core audience wants; the bastard child of the Sims, a virtual dollhouse, and Second Life a virtualized chatroom- the most casual, not interesting, and certainly not fun "games" ever created.

I agree with Jim 100% on Home. "It's a pile of shit. Anybody who has taste can see that."

I didn't imply you are dishonest, just that you like to have a mental bin of things labeled "Shit" so you can pull something out when it's time for a rant.

The problem is that once a person labels something, they usually have to fight with people who wouldn't label it the same way. And that fight usually devolves into a pointless turf battle, rather than an attempt to meander towards the truth. Case in point: most of your comments sections.

But instead of talking about that - something actually really interesting, I wake up to yet another Home bashing post. And I swear I've seen 2, if not 3 posts making fun of Home in the last 2 weeks.
