Holy sh*t, a new Lufia sequel got announced! photo

This was probably the absolute last thing I expected to hear this month, but it's true. A new sequel to Lufia was announced today in Famitsu by Square Enix, and I couldn't be happier. It's currently titled Estpolis, (which is how the games are known in Japan), but unfortunately there's no information available yet on what systems the game will be coming to, when the game will release, or if we can expect to see a US version.

If you have no idea what Lufia is, it's a criminally under-appreciated RPG series from the SNES days. Often overshadowed by the likes of Chrono Trigger and Final Fantasy, it combined solid RPG gameplay with some unique puzzle solving and a rather decent story. The last time the US saw a Lufia game was in 2002, when Ruins of Lore came out on the GBA. A bit odd that Square is deciding to revive this series, but I'm certainly not complaining. Expect to see more details when the next issue of Famitsu is out.

The first Lufia game always seemed to me like a mediocre knock-off of Lunar, right down to the 'twist' near the end. Am I the only one? (I've never played Lufia II, so no idea of the quality)

Lufia 2 has got of the best RPG endings ever. It's even better because you THINK you know what's going to happen if you played Lufia 1,but actually you get a nice surprise!

@trickfred

I think Lunar would technically be the knock-off of Lufia, but I digress...(For the record, I love both series, however, but Lufia came first!).

In other news--THIS IS AWESOME! Lufia 2 was one of my favorite SNES games ever!

I always saw the Lufia games for snes and gba back in the day but never got to tryin them. This is good news pending it lies up to it's predecessors since I have always been curious about them.

EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE.

Lufia II is one of the only two games that have ever given me Manly Tears. The other is Terranigma. If you've never played it before, hie ye to the nearest emulator.

@kaizokuonii: I believe you're mistaken. Lunar was released in Japan for the Sega CD on June 26th, 1992, whereas Lufia was released in Japan for the SuperNES on June 25th, 1993. Almost exactly a year - that's enough time for Taito to have aped the plot, though I'm not saying they did, just that it seemed that way to me.

This is so awesome. I just hopes it's not anything like that thing on GBA that thing on GBA that called itself Lufia. I think I'm gonna play Lufia 2 now, and own some monster faces with Dekar.

I... I'm speechless, this is the greatest news I've heard in awhile. Now if Nintendo will put the 2 SNES games on VC, then all will be good. I'm still in the process of playing the Gameboy game, but Lufia 2 is on of my top games ever, with Lufia one close behind. The real question is what system will is be released for, and will it be handheld or not.

@iPwn,

I was thinking the same thing about seeing the first two titles on VC (or, really, an download service). Hopefully they'll do something like that as a build-up for the release of the new one, or maybe even DS remakes. Squeenix does love them some DS remakes of old games.

I've never been a huge fan of Lufia, but it is a solid series that needs more appreciation than its got.

I remember playing these on my Super Nintendo's Wild Card Disk System thing that our cousins sent us for one of my older bro's birthdays. They were awesome games, truly.

First Square announces FFXIII will hit Europe just four days before my birthday, and then they go ahead and announce a new Lufia game. Wonderful job, Square.

Great news! Hopefully they don't screw it up with whiney teenager voices, choppy visuals and wank story.

I really liked the way the enemies moved as you moved. Plus, I love stories that carry on past what some stories would percieve as the ending (After the wedding in this case). Like the second part of Final Fantasy 6. It gives the story a whole new feel.

Now Sega needs to get on-board and give us some sequels to Shining Wisdom, Shining Force, Beyond Oasis, and get someone working on an Albert Odyssey remake or sequel!

Lufia II was pretty kind of awesome. The tool based puzzles were great, and the random 100 floor bonus dungeon with it's unique item system was awesome The first one was sort of meh though.

Nice, but I'm burnt out on too many jrpg games. I feel that too much encouragement for these games, while I have a soft spot for them, makes japanese developers and publishers lazy, hardly ever making anything new.

Yeah, the first one wasn't the strongest (although I still liked it), but the second one is fantastic.

I loved the first Lufia game when I was a kid, but I never really played much of the sequels. Still, I'm looking forward to this!
