Holy man calls games 'electronic crack,' unknowingly labels himself a douchebag photo

Father Raymond DeSouza has his own entry on Wikipedia, so perhaps he is more important than me and I have no right to complain here. However, there's a difference between stupid commentary and intolerable commentary, and this crap falls into the latter like a baseball player cleanly sliding across home plate. In his column for Canada's conservative National Post, he writes:

I learned the truth about video games the hard way, and so this is the lesson I offer for free: Don’t play video games. Don’t own them. And for the sake of all that is good and holy, don’t buy them for your children…

Since [deleting Tetris] I have never played another video game. It’s too dangerous. Video games take what is most precious — time and thought. And they are making kids fat.

Video games are like a black hole into which time disappears…They are the crack cocaine of the electronic world…

Did I mention that far too many video games celebrate graphic violence, multifarious delinquency and borderline pornography? I don’t have to. Tetris had none of that, and it was deadly enough.

You're wrong, Ray. Wrong. The reasons why abound, but the most glaring one is that you've never played a game since Tetris. There is something about the religious extreme that seems to encourage judgement without proper experience to base one's opinion on, and this is no exception. Also -- Tetris is "deadly?" How? Did the red blocks remind you too much of the blood of Christ?

This is unacceptable for a greater reason, however, and it will be the one least discussed in response to this tripe: Video games have saved a lot of lives. For me, it turned me from a lonely kid into a happy one, helping me through times in my life that other wise would have been dark were it not for the friends I made both in games and because of them. Likely, I'm one of hundreds of thousands that will tell you that story.

Lesson to take away, kids: Closed mindedness increases the chances that people will pray for you to die in a fire.

I don't know, the l-block kind of does look like the male genitalia. Puttin that thing into holes doesn't help either. Also the fact that someone with a deep southern accent may say holes as "hoes" only adds to the mess. Oh me oh my.

Articles like this really bother, it's really sad to see someone spreading his misinformation to parents and adults who don't understand videogames. Videogames aren't any more addictive than anything else in life; people need to treat them like any other form of entertainment. You need to balance your spare time, with reading, outdoor activities, etc. Everything needs moderation; you can’t spend all your time playing videogames, watching TV, or using the computer. I’m extra disappointed by this article because I read the National Post every day; it makes me think they let anything qualify as news worthy. I’m actually in the process of writing a reply to the article which I’m going to submit to the editorial department of the newspaper tonight. Whether or not they will print it is another question, anyway I’ll publish my final draft on my c-blog later.

@lostalaska

I agree with your intent but you dont seem to have the true meaning of addiction which there are two categories, one is physical and the second would be psychological.

I personally could agree that there could potentially be something of a gaming addiction in the same way that there can be a gambling addiction. Look at how people who are nuts about WoW act, if thats not addiction I dont know what is.

Also, dont they have gaming rehab in Korea? Id think that points to a definite link between addiction and gaming. Im not an expert in any of this and honestly could care less but these may be some things to think about.

Common you guys. What's the point of singling out some no name priest in a no name magazine from Canada? Some of you are digging pretty deep to find excuses to judge the Church, when the truth is that guys like this guy are few and far between, so drop it already. I'm really getting tired of all the hateful comments towards Christians.
If people want so badly to vent on their frustrations about religion (I have plenty of my own, too) shouldn't that be what the blogs are about, why should this hateful crap always make the front page of a gaming site?

Summary: There are some stupid Christians out there that don't no anything about video games.

RePost for the 1000th time!

I wonder if this priest, and any others who spew this brand of enlightenment, have ever seen the effects of chemical dependency first hand. Crackhead - crack = not for the weak of heart and stomach. Not all addictions are bad. Jesus himself could have been said to be addicted to love.

The ironic thing is that there are Christian videogames (which suck though)... and according to this guy, even God-centered games are deadly? I'm confused.

And yes, Tetris is a very violent game. I've played it once, I'm now scarred for life... that game should've gotten an AO rating.

LOL

games take away thought? thats simply incorrect. games make you think, solve puzzles, dream imaginary things. but you all already knew that.

kids are fat though...

Reminds me of that dream I had when the Christians fought the crusades and killed a lot of people violently, and also that time when David killed Goliath... and that time when all of the people on Earth were drowned except Noah.. I sure have crazy dreams. Oh wait! That stuff really happened. Religion is more violent than games.

Wow. Here I was assuming a total religion bash-fest (and willing was I to join in) but it seems most of you are actually open-minded and are careful to distance "Christians" with "fundamental ass-hats". Way to go, Robot anon. I salute you.

On the same note, I go to a moderate Bible College (last semester, thank... something) and those whose stance lines up with Reverend Dickweed here are few and far between. I'm actually DONE with Christianity, but quite a few of my friends are Christians and I don't hold it too much against them ;-)

Also, @ OP:

Also -- Tetris is "deadly?" How? Did the red blocks remind you too much of the blood of Christ?

RTFA? He explains himself well enough if you read his entire quote, not just the GamePolitics excerpt.

Yes he's full of shit, but do you really have any evidence he's never even played Tetris?

I actually like the National Post, so this disappoints me.

Video games saved my life too. My integration into online communities on the subject really helped my self-esteem concerning my ability to interact.

So because this guy had no self-control when it came to playing video games, they have some innate magic power to turn everyone into zombies. Right.

That "addictive allure" he describes is called FUN. Stay away from fun at all cost.

It is over-zealous, judging a book by it's cover, extreme reglious types that just ruin the image of the faith completely. I love video games and yes some are violent just to be violent (manhunt comes to mind) but that doesn't mean that since one is bad that all are bad. Also, where did he get tetris as being deadly? Tetris is probably the most harmless game in exsistence.

This is why religious zealots shouldn't get free time, they start campaigning for the good of our souls, or some crap like that.

It's interesting how games connect us. Not just in the online sense. I am 16 and I just transferred schools, so no friends or familiarity of the place or anything. I found myself
hanging out in the library studying most of the time, and pretty much every time someone sat down next to me they inevitably asked the same question "So... Are you a gamer?". In those exact words actually... It started getting annoying, but it always sparked a conversation. It seems that even with 2/3 of America playing games(and pretty much the entire school. There is a gamer-girls club here. It's the perfect school. Even the librarian was addicted to puzzle quest lately) it's still like some sort of secret hobby. This brotherhood with a familiarity we all share. Regardless of genre or difficultly or anything if you enjoy these games, you're in.

On a more direct note to the article. His biggest problem is the time it consumes? it's addictiveness? HE'S A PRIEST! Have some self-control damn it! Some people like passing the the time that way. Yeah, it seems useless to him, but a puzzle game, just like the name says, is no better or worse than a jigsaw puzzle. Just more fun, actually.

Anyway, if he thinks it's why people don't talk, he's never played co-op. If he thinks it's why kids get fat, he's never played the Wii. If he thinks Tetris is like crack... Well, he never tried crack. He is the one wasting his life preaching to the same quire of republican nutjobs and pissing off the same group of gamers(what's that? 2/3 of America? That a lot of people pissed!).

I patiently await the day this is no longer news(although it's kinda hard to write a blog and always keep it flowing with articles, so I can't really blame you, but still...)
