We've just received a billion tips about a brand new 2D Sonic the Hedgehog game to be published by Sega in 2010. According to the video, this is an all-new Sonic game in hi-def. The game is currently codenamed as Project Needlemouse and it looks like the idea is to create an old school game that evokes feelings of "proper" Sonic games.
I never thought they'd do it. I never thought they'd capitalize on the success of Mega Man 9 and actually try to make a "real" Sonic again, but perhaps I underestimated Sega. Still, some questions are unanswered -- why does the sillouhette in the mystery logo not look like Sonic (it's been pointed out that it might actually be the original logo and I am dumb)? Does the Needlemouse name have any meaning (it was an original Sonic codename)? Will Sonic Team be doing this, and if so, will it just be 2D suckage?
Nobody knows, but for right now, I am very excited!

I'm also very excited about this , i think the character in the logo is wearing a magician hat or something @_@
Here's hoping this new 2D Sonic game to be a full retail release instead of a XBLA or PSN game.
I'd like to be optimistic, but I'm just going to go ahead and say that they're probably going to fuck it up. I don't think Sega is capable of making a good Sonic game anymore, even if it is 2D. But on the bright side, if it does turn out to be good I'll be happy. If it doesn't, then no skin off my back because I knew better then get excited about a new Sonic game.
Seeing that in Japanese a hedgehog is a "Hari Nezumi" or literally a "needle mouse", Project Needlemouse is almost certainly going to be a Hedgehog-based title.
I'm very excited, but again I'm become very excited every time I hear of a new Sonic adventure... Only my hopes, dreams and desires are crushed upon each game's release.
Hell, guess it's about time to repeat that vicious cycle.
SEGA!
@Trevor: No, they seem to know how to make a good 2D game. Hell, Secret Rings was pretty good (and was received pretty well, critically), and that was 3D. They just need to stop with the gimmicks. I'm optimistic.
@auntnadia: You shut your whore mouth. You know nothing, as the game hasn't even been shown. Still your tongue, and wait until we see it before assuming anything. And no, I am not a Sonic fan. Not even close to one.
Though by no means a guarantee for success, this is at least a step in the right direction and something we used to be hoping for for a long time - until some of us lost all hope. My sweet childhood memories of Sonic won't let me stay cynical about this so color me excited for now!
First off, everyone needs to calm down. Don't get excited over this. If you get excited over this, you'll only set yourself up for disappointment. Seriously, do we have to get excited for EVERY new Sonic game because it "shows promise" and then get shot down due to it's horrible end product?
And secondly, until they show some screen shots or video footage, I will not believe that it's truly 2D. These days, 2D means 2D movement/gameplay, not 2D artwork or sprites. So until I see it, I wont believe that it will actually be 2D sprites.
And no, I'm not saying this game has no possibility of being good. There is a chance of it being good or even okay. But I'm not going to fool myself into thinking this will be a revival of the old Sonic games and bring back good gameplay. I would rather be realistic, and set low standards for this and be surprised by the outcome if it turns out well, rather than get excited to only get shot down at the end.

This is good news, but I'm still disappointed that they aren't trying for a game that just consists of the fast bits of Sonic Unleashed. The 3-D there was perfectly fine. Plus, I would venture that the purely 2-D bits of that game (I'm looking at you, Rooftop Run Day Act 2) were actually the worst.
Meh, every step away from Sonic 2006 is a good one.
it's going to be a 2D with 3D Graphics like Unleashed...wich'll suck with a weird framerate...UNLESS ITS A FAAAAAAAAARM
And even if they put sonic being a ball with its ball sound...but the logo chara is a hedgehog with a HAT...Sega,dont suck on this one...please? XD..Do like Megaman 9...2D SPRITING,BITCH
btw,...ehehhe...WHO THE FUCK IS JIM STERLING?!?! XD
@Auntnadia: Yes, but don't always just write it off. You need to see footage before passing judgment. I do not expect this to be awesome, nut i will not write it off, either. I will wait and see.
Just a correction about the OP: http://www.capcom-unity.com/ask_capcom/go/thread/view/7371/20041773/Was_Mega_Man_9_successful
"I am wondering how well you guys did with Mega Man 9? I was personally blown away by this game and I am wondering if has been successful enough to open some new doors or not. Do you think we might see more games along these lines in the recent future?"
“I don’t think we were disappointed by it. I can’t say right now whether or not you’ll see more in this style but I know there’s creative interest in doing so.” – Christian Svensson, Corporate Officer/VP of Strategic Planning & Business Development
Think about it. If Megaman 9 was a successful reboot, then he would have said Megaman 9 was more than just not dissappointing. If nothing else, there would be a financial interest in creating more games in the Megaman 9 style, rather than a creative interest.
I don't think Megaman 9 was exactly successful enough to warrent capitalizing on it. Now if he said "New Super Mario Bros.'s success" the I would completely and unreservedly agree with his assessment - New super mario Bros. pretty much was the most successful reboot of all time.

we all know its going to be shit :(

and yes, it will be shit. if sega released a brand of sugar, it would taste like lemons.
But Monodi did an comparison picture with the classic Sonic silhouette in lwelyk's blog and it matched up pretty nicely!
Fingers crossed, eh?
Hahahah...100% agreed, buddy.
i.e. like apeshit.
Niiiice references.
Nether is the developer.
My explanation was better XD

MY DAY JUST STARTED OUT AMAZING
Yet I believe!
to quote mr w bush
"fool me once, shame on --shame on you. Fool me -- you can't get fooled again."
i think he was attempting to sum up post 1990's sega with this.
Is it allowed within the Destructoid ToS to say "I came"? Because I totally did.
So my status for now, extremely wary.
Also questioning if it's real.

Goddamn, I don't want to get my hopes up, but that teaser is making it really hard not to be excited right now. :D
The game is widely regarded as a commercial success. I can't remember exact numbers, but it sold very well on its respective platforms.
