Hollywood perplexed by Ubisoft control over AssCreed film photo

Sony Pictures recently signed a deal with Ubisoft to put Assassin's Creed on the silver screen and some Hollywood insiders are astounded by the amount of control Ubisoft will retain over the project. Apparently Sony had to yield control over the budget, principal cast, script and the release date to the rightful owner of the IP.

According to NYMag one Hollywood insider said, "As a director, even Steven Spielberg cannot get this kind of deal." As another "talent agent who represents a smaller video game publisher" pitched in, "The whole Ubisoft/Sony deal is a waste of ink, paper and time. The level of control Sony gave up means, effectively, that Assassin's Creed will never -- and I mean never -- get made." Fighting words!

NYMag points out that DreamWorks was the first studio to pass on the film project, so yeah, Spielberg did not get that kind of deal. Universal and Warner Bros. were also in the race to acquire the film rights to Assassin's Creed and insiders have told NYMag that both were turned off by the publisher's demands. As one studio chief who dropped out of the bidding race put it, "They want to be able to pull the plug on the whole movie’s development if they decide to. It’s ridiculous."

Yet another studio executive noted, "It's [Ubisoft's] billion-dollar brand, so I get that they're protective. But they're not moviemakers, and the only way to make sure it's a bad movie is to undervalue what movie studios do -- and this is a deal that totally undervalues what movie studios do."

What's that? Prince of Persia was a studio movie that was only good for fans of Jake Gyllenhaal's glistering Adonis chest? Ubisoft apparently agrees and is said to believe the deal with Sony will solve this "Prince of Persia problem," one that the publisher thinks turned their Persian platformer into a mediocre movie at best because it didn't have enough control over the project.

Sony didn't want to comment on the issue to NYMag, but a source told them that Ubisoft secured additional creative control because it is spending a lot of its own money on the project. Supposedly Sony, in turn, is investing "only a fraction of what a studio typically would spend to option or develop a script."

You know what? I'm am totally ok with this. If it ends up becoming too much of an overhead for the Assassin's Creed film series to ever get off the ground, so be it. At least we won't get some Hollywood hottie being cast as Desmond, Altaïr, and/or Ezio when there is another actor who is much better tailored for the role (i.e., Prince of Persia's casting disaster) and Ubisoft has proven to be pretty serious about the franchise's story and universe -- even if it has shown itself to be overzealous with milking Ezio's arc in the series so far.

Moreover, whether you like Assassin's Creed or not it's one of the (sadly) few remaining AAA properties these days that doesn't shy away from social commentary and satire about current events. From the contemporary look on the usage of religion as a means to power throughout history, to the silly but fantastic depiction of Supreme Court justices as Templars, or biting remarks on the state of the U.S. healthcare system, Ubisoft already provided a lot of freedom in a big budget game of the kind you wouldn't easily see in a mass-marketed Hollywood movie.

Sure, the game itself is not primarily about any of these things you see in the Subject 16 puzzles or the snappy remarks you find in the Animus database, but ever since Assassin's Creed II the series has used historical backdrops for the action that no studio head would ever greenlight in its original form to market to a largely Christian and Western audience. Do you think anyone in Hollywood would fund tens of millions of dollars to just put a The Borgias movie in production? No, and that's why it's on TV. Plus the AssCreed story is an excellent mix of violent history mixed with just enough ridiculous Stargate science fiction, both of which are awesome. Don't mess with that, even though I still have no idea what is going on exactly.

So hell yes I'm down with Ubisoft retaining a lot of creative control. There's no guarantee it will be good because of it, or if we'll ever even see it, but as someone who has seen pretty much every one of these videogame film adaptions -- and they have only ever offered campy entertainment at best -- there's no way it can end up worse than giving some studio free reign to mess it up.

The major downsides, besides a bloated production and too much back-and-forth between the publisher and studio? Patrice Désilets, the brain behind the series, left Ubisoft once his creative input for Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood was done. Assassin's Creed: Revelations has yet to prove if it can match or surpass Brotherhood, which was better than Assassin's Creed II in terms of gameplay but lacked the scope of its predecessor, so we don't even know if the current creative leads behind the franchise will be up to the task of stepping in Désilets' shoes for a full game, let alone guide a film project to be true to the IP.

The biggest downside if the movies happen: Assassin's Creed: The Movie: The Video Game. You know it.

I'm all for UBI having full control. Movie studios have no idea what they're doing with games, facts.

I applaud Ubisoft for this. Giving Hollywood control over a game IP is a terrible idea.

It's not that they have no idea, it's the some people want to be different and story telling in games and in movies is totally different.

However since this method (the game company having more control then the movie company) hasn't been done before, it's worth a shot, since all previous attempts have failed, pretty badly.

Yes, because those movie studios have done such amazing work with their video game adaptations in the past.

I think Ubisoft is making the right move at having control over the film. How many great games have been turnen into crappy movies? Prince of Persia, Resident Evil, Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat... I mean come on, there are really few which have escaped such fate and the only one I can think of at the moment is Silent Hill.

Go Ubi! Just because it's Hollywood doesn't mean they have the right to use our favourite games to make crappy movies.

I'm not surprised a bunch of people in Hollywood are butthurt over Ubisoft's demands. It basically amounts to "No, we're not GIVING you the rights to make a movie about our property. We're HIRING you to make a film, and we're gonna tell you what we want, and you're going to do it."

Frankly, I think that's the way it ought to be. We've seen what happens when other people get creative control over game films; the results lean overwhelmingly toward the atrocious. I'm interested to see how Ubisoft will handle the task now set before them.

"What do they know about telling a story? Our stories have to last 2 hours, theirs have to last what, the intro text? Everyone knows that video games are just: story-gameplay-ending sequence. Was their a story behind Resident Evil before the movies? No. Was their a story behind Prince of Persia before the movies? No. Is their a story behind any of the Final Fantasy games? No, and they're some of the most famous games out there.

"And our directors are perfect at creating movies. Alone in the Dark? An amazing, cinematic story. Street Fighter? That movie was perfect in every way. And Super Mario Bros: The Movie was a testament to our ability to adapt such fringe cultures as video games to the mainstream showcase.

"It's perplexing. Don't they know we want to rape their product? WHY DON'T THEY WANT US TO RAPE THEIR PRODUCT? That's what we do. It's not fair, all we want is to rape their product a little bit, and they're just demanding we don't."

If good games usually end up being shit films, then does that mean that an Assassin's Creed film will be really good, because the games play like my cat's feces.

The problem with PoP as a movie was that it was a remake of The Scorpion King which was kind of a campier version of Robin Hood Prince of Thieves.

But those movies were fun because they didn't take themselves do seriously. Also The Prince didn't lead a band of merry men, so ripping off those two movies wasn't proper anyway.

The way we can get better video game based movies is if those that created them retain more creative control and input. It reminds me a little of when Marvel finally took over their own Movieverse; most of the films before hand were mediocre at best until they were producing them with less of an outside influence.

I'm okay with this. Currently Assassin's Creed is a delicate private, with lots of twists and turns in their story. A diluted Hollywood cash grab could tarnish the AC brand name.

It always reminds me of the story of Valve trying to get a Half-Life movie made. "It all sounds good until the studio exec says 'And then Gordon falls in love...' Next thing you know we're on the plane back to Seattle."

I think this is a REALLY good idea, and I hope everything works out. Obviously studios had such a GREAT track record with such faithful movie adaptions as Street Fighter: Chun Li, Silent Hill, Alone in the Dark and the Mario Bros Movie.

I think more developers should take this approach, that way such atrocities as Dragonball Evolution and Avatar will never be made. :/

There will never be a good movie based on a video game unless both sides can meet in the middle when it comes to creative input. Their egos just won't allow it.

Reminds me of when O' Russell wanted to make his Uncharted film a giant steaming pile of shit that didn't resemble the games - why call it "Uncharted?" - why not just make a treasure hunting family film?

I'm glad the actual game developer/publisher here has control - although it may be extreme, at least it's something.

One doesn't have to be a movie maker to know who would be a good fit to play certain roles etc, and clearly being a movie maker gives nobody special abilities to knock every movie out of the park. PoP was bloody awful and did nothing for the franchise. At least this way, the people who know something about the actual content will have more of a say in it's creation.

It might not work out, but obviously giving movie studios all the control has not paid off either.

The lack of control on the part of the IP holder usually results in generic and terrible movies. The live action Tekken movie had nothing to do with Tekken, so I'm hoping the CG film will be better as the creators are in control. I would love to see an Assassin's Creed movie as long as the source material is respected. And if Ubisoft have there way I will definitely watch it.

This was the most smart idea since the toaster. Seriously, I'm glad that a video game studio looked at this and thought, "We need to have control not because we are greedy but because I don't want them f$@k this up".

All it took was one movie from their stuff to screw it up (which, I thought was alright). I tip my hat to Ubisoft for this.

The casting blew ass.

I will say that at least if Hollywood decided to make ezio's story, they would be able to cast all of the pretty white people that they want without anyone saying anything.

All of the religious subtext will be gone either way, though. The Templars would be like Opus Di or somthing, trying to make a power grab or some sect that is not quite in control of a mainstream Christian orgainization. If parents see the movie and walk away with the idea that it is anti-Christian, Ubi is fucked. Ratings mean nothing. We already know that parents are the ones responsible for these super selling titles.
