HMV to enter the second-hand games market photo

British entertainment retailer HMV is going to enter the pre-owned market by accepting trade-in deals for its products. The scheme, known as Re/Play launches this Friday across 160 stores. It will sell all current console games, including PlayStation 2 titles.

"HMV Re/Play further underlines HMV's growing credentials as a games specialist, and enhances the credibility of our games offer through extended range and by providing a strong value proposition to our customers," states HMV's head of games Tim Ellis.

"This represents a great deal for our customers, as well as for our industry, as we believe it will help to drive footfall and stimulate increased sales of new games releases and hardware, as well as other entertainment products available from HMV."

HMV has already suggested that it is focusing more on games than music in recent times, and it's hardly surprising that the recession-resilient videogames industry is a tempting prospect for retailers. With HMV entering the second-hand games market, it will now be in a greater position to compete with videogame-specialist retailer GAME, something I fully support, because GAME is rubbish and competition is good.

I tell you what, Gamestation doesn't have bad deals... Trouble is, I feel like I'm entering an episode of Red Dwarf when I go to that place. Too much grating and steal.

Hopefully they will start with a bang with a 25% extra on first trade-in or something.

FYI the trade in rates aren't really better than anywhere else BUT because they only started doing re/played games last Friday they haven't had a lot of time for people to trade in games and so a lot of the stock on the shelves labeled as re/played games are in fact brand new left over stock and are not second hand.

So if you pick up a re/played game especially in one of the bigger stores then chances are it is brand new and unplayed

If ever I'm feeling a little down or terminally depressed, let's say from not finding any sweet game deals while shopping, I go in HMV and look at their prices on games. It always cheers me right up and gives me a good laugh. I don't know of any other store who still to this day has the gall to price Perfect Dark Zero at £50.

Gamestation isn't too bad on trade-in rates where I live. Much better than GAME anyway.

If Re/Play takes DVDs too, I'll be doing all mine at HMV from now on.

They have had pre-owned games on sale in the dundee HMV for about a week now and most of their games I can find cheaper new from other retailers near by.

Rememember when pre-owned used to mean cheap and not just £2 less for a scrathced game that smells of ass.

Game does own Gamestation, hence the growing similarity, CEX is my retailer of choice for older games whereas I usually go with gamestation for newer titles.

I do agree with more compettion for the pre-owned market though, cheaper games ftw.

HMV's pricing of new games is pretty laughable, and i'm sure i've heard that games publishers restrict the amount you can sell pre-owned copies of their games for to reduce pre-owned sales at least for a period of time after launch. Any other brits on here should really not get their hopes up, we get shafted on games prices and we'll continue to get shafted.
