HMV says MGS4 360 listing was a mistake, sorry they 'caused such a stir' photo

Not surprisingly, retailer HMV has admitted that an online pre-order listing for Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots for the Xbox 360 was a mistake by its online team.

It seems the error was due to an employee who displayed so much "enthusiasm" that he couldn't help himself from listing the title, even going as far as to make up a fictitious release date. What he actually meant to do, an HMV spokesperson told GamesIndustry.biz, was to ask customers if they wanted to receive an alert if the title was one day available.

So there you have it -- a simple mistake, one that anyone could have made. And I'd say that about cinches it: Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots is only coming out on the PlayStation 3. We're clear on that, right?

Solid Snake on the 360? Oh, you kids and your wild pipe dreams! That's just crazy talk.

This epic about MGS4 and what systems it will be on is insane. When this game comes out D-Toid needs to do a retrospective on the WHOLE shit-storm about it being on 360 and such. It would be cool so we can laugh at each other and do the usual "i told you so!"

A "mistake"?

This must be one of those guys that gets away with "it fell in..." when he gets caught cheating.

I agree with Scottoid. This has been a total sage and needs a recap when it's finally over.

Ron is working on a limited edition MGS4-themed bull horn for the occasion

Metal Gear Solid 4 will definitely be on the 360 eventually. It may be released on the PS3 first, but I know it will eventually be ported to the 360 as well. Besides, leaving it on the PS3 only would mean pretty crummy sales figures, as opposed to having it released on the PS3 and 360.

If other games are anything to go by, it will have to be porterd to the 360, becuase, quite frankly, keeping on the PS3 is like chocking your self when you could easily let go.

Pse = no user, no users = no one buying it, no one buying it = it going to the better system.

The only fishy thing about this is that the listed release date for the 360 is almost exactly 6 months after the ps3 release date .... fishy.

no... about 2 million current PS3 users will probably buy it (out of 6.5-7 million), and it will cause 1 or 2 million more to buy PS3s... that's what happened with MGS2 on the PS2!!! of course final fantasy X came out at the same time as mgs2, so that could have had something to do with it...

The cost of developing a game for the PS3 is much much higher than it was for the PS2. The game has been in development for several years, and it's still a year off, which means that Konami will still be at a loss in revenue until this game's eventual release. Not to mention the costs of publicizing the game, events to promote the game, etc etc etc. Konami are a money making company in the end, and regardless of what fanboys want, Konami will do what they can to make back that money they've spent on development. The most logical way being to release it on both systems. Even if they are released 6 months or more apart, install base of 9 million plus an install base of 2-3 million is better than just an install base of 2-3 million and a possible system purchase base of 1 million more.

Besides, even MGS2 came out on the Xbox, remember?

I'm sorry but MGS4 is one game I could live without. The recent Metal Gear Solids have been way more movie than actual game.

Of course they're saying it was a "mistake." No company would admit to such an accidental jumping of the gun. I wouldn't be surprised if Sony had an agreement where the 360 CAN'T be announced until the release of the PS3 version. Bank on it, I'd say. If the release date of April for the PS3 version is accurate, I'd expect a 360 announcement in May.

Whatever, it'll be on the 360 eventually, even the GameCube got Metal Gear in the end.

For developers, exclusives just aren't smart anymore. The PS3 has a very limited number of users, in comparison to the 360. I'm sure MGS4 will help drive up that number, but if you want your game to reach the best audience possible, you put it on the most accessible, popular system - which is the 360, for the foreseeable future. (Excluding the Wii, naturally.) Granted, this isn't as big of a deal for Kojima and his franchise, but still that's the way things are heading, in general. I wouldn't find it at all surprising, at least.

Publishers releasing titles meant for the global market aren't going to be looking just at Japan. 360 is doing better right now worldwide, and Konami would be leaving money on the table not porting the game to that system. Unless Sony drops a lot of cash to keep it a PS3 exclusive indefinitely, it'll come to the 360 eventually.
