Seriously, the amount of hoops and proprietry formats you have to go through is simply ridiculous.
and by looking at a list of games that use it there arnt that many. and most were mods that other people made.
im just curious, if its the "most flexible, comprehensive, and powerful game development environment out there" then why isnt anyone using it to make games?
I think they do license it. Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines was made with the Source engine and that was before Half-Life 2. Mind you, Valve sold them a half completed engine and predictably the game was a technical mess.

It would make sense that Source 2 is coming for the next gen. PC fanboys hate to admit it, but their entire platform is dependent on the consoles. That's why new engines come out right before the next and the best PC games come at the end of the current one (Deus Ex, System Shock 2, and Half Life 1 say hello).
HOPEFULLY this means that Valve has been dragging its feet for so fucking long with the next Half Life because they want to put it on the next version of Source, hopefully for a 2013 release. Which is nice and all, but I would have taken it four year earlier in Source 1.0 thank you very much.
All kidding about rabid fans aside, this is awesome news. The Source engine has been used for some wonderful things, and I'm sure the new one will be stellar.

It surprises me that it is underutilized too. I always assumed that the source engine was poorly optimized for consoles and that is why it was underutilized.
and it has nothing to do with trolling. i love how people use blanket comments to push others to the side like a plague infested leper. i was asking why they thought it was the best engine out there when there are tons of other engines that do more things than source. but im not a developer so i wouldnt know the the background mechanics of them so maybe im wrong and source is the end all be all engine every one should be using but arnt...... but as a gamer, i dont see how its any better than any other engine out there.

To actually address your questions instead of just being combative, they've only updated the Source Engine once or twice, while the Unreal Engine gets updated every couple of years and is capable of much higher end graphics. A lot of companies want cutting edge graphics, and Source isn't necessarily going to deliver. The advantages of the Source Engine are the fact that it's GREAT for modding, because development kits are free to anyone who owns a Valve game, and it's possible to put a map together without doing any coding, and pretty much any computer made in the last three or four years can run it perfectly. It's not the most technically advanced engine, it's not the most robust necessarily, but of the popular pc gaming engines it is without a doubt the easiest to use, which is why all of Valve's games have about a million mods each.
I know what you're saying. I'll grant them the first 2 as it's very easy to use, comprehensive in terms of feature set and flexible. The flexibility is key. Source games may not look stunning anymore, but they don't have a signature look. It's odd, an Unreal game looks like an Unreal game most of the time, but a Source game looks bespoke. Which is even odder when you think that most of those games were built by the same developer.
Powerful is subjective. I scoffed when I read it as obviously it doesn't measure up to modern engines. But can it be powerful in terms of deployment? Yes it can and I'm not sure if it is or not.
Meh, who cares anyway. They should have cleaned out the code of the SFM because in 5 years time, people will be screaming for Source 2 to appear.
