Hindu society gets its way, Sony preps an apology photo

You may recall me telling you about Hanuman: Boy Warrior last week, a PS2 title that got the The Universal Society of Hinduism all pissed off because it makes light of the adventures of Lord Hanuman, a monkey god who the Hindu venerate. Society president Rajan Zed now claims that Sony has agreed to investigate their claims, per GamePolitics:

Replying to the communiqué of Bhavna Shinde of Forum for Hindu Awakening, Keita Sanekata of Sony Electronics Inc wrote, “We will review this issue, and get back to you as soon as possible.”

Advancing the protest spearheaded by acclaimed Hindu statesman Rajan Zed, Shinde earlier wrote Sanekata to “look into withdrawing this game and publishing an apology, so as to prevent further denigration of our Deity Sree Hanuman and intensifying of our protests..."

This information came out in a press release from the Society recently. It's also worth noting they had a similar reaction to the 2008 Mike Myers film The Love Guru, which you can read all about here. Bottom line: don't make movies about the Hindu. Or music, or books, or greeting cards, or interpretative dances. Just ignore any inspiration you might happen to be feeling about their culture, because you just can't do so without pissing them off. I hear taking yourself slightly less seriously works wonders, guys.

I wonder if Sony just called the game Monkey Man if they would back off?

"What's that Hindu society? You're offended by Monkey Man? But it has nothing to do with Lord Hanuman. Piss off."

Seriously, political correctness needs to be bitched slapped more often.

So they're going to make a game about their venerable Monkey God that little kids will play and learn more of their venerable Monkey God... and this is bad how again, exactly?

In SMT Nocturne, Hanuman is a normal enemy. You get to kill him over and over again. He's not even that powerful, and is in fact on the low end of the usefulness scale when it comes to available demons at his level.

Suck it, zealots.

Fuck them, Hinduism is just as extremist as the Muslims (If not more, lookup the Hindu Caste system, or just click here http://www.friesian.com/caste.htm) which is so God (lol!) damn primitive and idiotic.

Seriously, political correctness needs to be bitched slapped more often. x 2

I still think it's idiotic. But, I guess many countries don't understand the concept of free speech as well as the fact that the best way to educate people in your religious beliefs is to actually educate them rather than make sure that they only see what you want them to see.

There's plenty of Hindu deities in the SMT series. And a grip of them suck.

Let 'em complain. What are they gonna do? Counter by making a game in which one of their deities beats up Jesus? I'll play that game.

Fuck dem, If I had a dump truck full of fucks, fuck no I wouldn't give NONE

While free speech is good and all this it he negative side of the coin. Some people just refuse to let anything slide and unfortunately companies like sony are all too willing to bend over backwards not to "offend". The funny thing is there are probably a lot of hindus who might enjoy media with their particular slice of religion. My solution is companies need to be a little less politically sensitive but thats not realistic.

As a Hindu, the amount of fucking idiots in the post has made me lose faith in Destructoid ever being the mature videogames community it aspires to be. Seriously, to actually insult a person's religion in a post to the extent that has happened here is offensive to an extent I don't really feel to be acceptable. I won't mention names but it should be blindingly obvious anyway.

Re: The actual post, I suppose the content of the actual game is what matters and assuming the dudes who made it were Hindus I doubt there's a problem with that, twitch reactions with no consideration fail. After all, it's just a representation of the deity and if it brings enjoyment to people then so be it. Then again, if you imagine the shitstorm that would come from a game about Jesus I think it's actually fairly impressive that the complaint is so small.

(FYI, the caste system was pretty much destroyed following Indian independance. Given that most feudal systems (which amount to the same thing) within Western Europe developed in this fashion about 10,000 years after the text was written regarding that it's pretty damn advanced)

even though i am raised hindu, i don't see anything bad about a game.

not that i don't think it's stupid, badly made.

the biggest insult i feel is that it wasn't even considered for the ps3 and was for the ps2.

Also, this is not a hindu problem, its obviously a RELIGIOUS problem (*pointing finger at Christianity and Islam).

Actually, in India, the caste system still holds sway. The government IS trying its best to stamp it out, but it still persists, much in the same way Mormon polygamy exists in the US, despite the US government's best efforts to stop the abusive practice of forced marriages.

Natural20 - you have to realize that Free Speech also means the freedom to insult people and get insulted. Insults and Hate Speech are different things. Insults hurt feelings, while Hate Speech actively incites violence. Hate speech should be banned, Insults should never be banned.

I'm an atheist. Go ahead, insult me. Even if you don't feel like doing it. Go on. I'll take the insult, and you know what? I won't do anything. Nothing at all.

Every culture has bad, VERY bad parts to it. My culture, Australian culture, has far too much drinking and domestic violence. Hindu culture, also, has many problems with it. In recent years, Hindu nationalists have tried to get anything remotely "western" banned in India, going so far as to slam Coca-Cola and Pepsi for being "wrong". They also tried to unoffically ban valentines day and some tried to whack any woman seen on a bar on that day (not the "kill" whack, I'm talking about the old fashion whacking). India is pretty much split into two societies at this point - the people in the modern cities who are forward thinking and developed and generally great people all-around, and the people in the remote villages who are superstitious as hell, intolerant and a bit crazy (like many rednecks in deep south USA, or in the outback in Australia, or in the remote provinces of China).

Hinduism, like all religions, are not a good thing when allowed to have too much power. Right now, in India, too many priests and whatnot have GENUINE power over its followers, instructing them to do this or that, or demanding their orders be carried out. In the west, priests can say stuff, but most people ignore them. The problem with India is that religion is still too powerful, the preists and the clergy still run their rural villages like their own personal clan. I know the government in India is doing their best to stamp out such nonsense, and I hope they do.

Christianity has also had its share of witch-burnings, book burnings, intolerant periods - but that stopped about 200 years ago in most Western Countries. I know in my heart that India will also stop the "crazies" from remaining in power.

trust me, no rational people (including Hindus) will take this seriously.

and about the caste system: it had little to do with religion, and nothing to do with spirituality, it was a societal device that only false prophets followed. The enlightened masters never followed it.

saying that is like saying Islam is all about taking away rights, or that Christianity is about stoning people to death.

i'd honestly rather talk about video games than this bullshit

I think it's funny that it's being protested by a group that barely even exists. The Universal Society for Hinduism has no history on the internet. They don't even have a wikipedia page - and that's saying something. Plus, it's Nevada-based, which means it doesn't come close to actually representing the ideas of a large group of Hindu's (namely, those that live in India), it represents a small group of them based out west.

Whenever I hear about a Nevada-based groups, I think two things: Mafia, or get-rich-quick scheme...
