Highlander: Eidos proves that with exceptions, there can be more than one

     Does it suck?

An exact release date hasn't been nailed down yet, but Eidos has released a trailer giving us an idea of what we can expect out of the game based on the name nerds and Sci-Fi buffs (present company included) have labeled a cult classic powerhouse.

Taking place over a myriad of locations spanning a 2,000-year period, you play as Owen MacLeod, and as one of the Immortals, you are a marked man. Your victory against the mysterious man that seeks to destroy you hinges on the mystical power of a stone, which at the moment is fragmented in three pieces, must be unified.

Utilizing the cat-like agility and swordsmanship that Immortals are known for, you will set out on a journey ranging from 1st century Pompeii, all the way to a near-future New York. Along the way, the idea is to see for yourself what it feels to wield the immense power of a being that can only be fallen by a swift beheading.

If the video isn't enough to wet your whistle, IGN has some more details (and stills) on tap. While the whole concept of Highlander revolves around the idea that there can only be one, Eidos is making an exception for us. Highlander will be available on the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and of course, PCs some time in 2008.

It's too early to call, but something tells me that this game is going to have a polarizing effect. Either it's going to be well received, or completely trashed by the fanbase and gamers alike. Here's to hoping for the former. Can we hope to have a good Highlander game without Christopher Lambert? We'll find out soon enough.

I used to love this series when it was out, it kinda just fell off for me after a while though, so I'm going to stay optimistic and hope this game is good.

Epic fail if no Clancy Brown. And I don't mean Mario Van Peeples doing a Clancy Brown impression.

I'm hoping for the best. I'm also hoping it's a quasi-GoW type game and that we're not just wielding a sword the whole way through the thing (bows/crossbows/muskets/guns/fists/etc.).

Here's hoping it's better than the Atari Jaguar game.

That one kind of still stings because I just picked it up recently for my Jaguar CD :-( It's got Resident Evil-style tank controls and it's just incredibly generic and infuriatingly short.

what would really make it awesome is if it was free roaming and story driven. Like an awesomely fleshed out VTM - Bloodlines. You could stalk other highlanders and be hunted yourself. You could set up traps and hone your skills in a training grounds. If it is supposed to span many time periods than you could take part in battles like in the first one where the opposing general is also a highlander. Also it would be way awesome if you hid your immortal nature than noone besides other highlanders would know to cut off your head. So you'd just be left in a ditch somewhere until you came to. Then people can chase you out of the village shouting "KILL THE DEMON!" I wish I wrote videogames.

This could be awesome. That is a fact. As for whether or not it will be awesome remains to be seen. This is Eidos we're talking about, after all.

@ Surf314 I like what you're thinking.

Even if they made a good game It wouldn't be a good highlander game without a combat system that allowed the character to be horrible mangled yet only die from beheading.
Highlander needs to be played from the bad guys view of wanting more power. Hunting and hunted.

I have lots of ideas as I'm sure many game players do, but implementing them is another thing entirely.

Highlander is fantastic and too rich in detail.
The game will disappoint. Bugger.

You would think they would just make up some other random immortal instead of inventing yet ANOTHER McCloud to star in a game/movie/tv series.

Why not make him a Roman, or Japanese, or Egyptian, or Carthaginian, or something? How about a female one?

Nowhere in the Highlander movies does it restrict immortals by race or gender, why just wear out the whole McCloud thing - put Connor or that other guy as guest appearances or something...

And yeah, top idea for the game guys. Shame its going to just be a side scrolling beat em up with average controls. You know it, I know it ;(

Or even better, do what Bruceleethree said, and bring us Deus Ex 3. All this other stuff is just taking away from time they could be working on it. Combine 6 groups or something, make it epic ;)

@ Surf314

I know some guys(my brother and others) who have this "official" Highlander scenario, live roleplaying, going on which means that they have to be prepared every day to never let their guard down cause others will hunt them down, there can be only one right?;)

Most of them don't know each other or where the others live so they have to track them down in some way, only they can't be killed in graveyards but other than that everything counts.

One of my friends who's in this got killed last year in a very funny way actually. Hes was out in town(Copenhagen, Denmark) drinking and he picks up this girl. She invites him home and he accepts(of course:D). So they get in and sit down. She needs to go to the bathroom. While he is sitting alone and drunk petting her cat she goes in her bedroom gets her sword(not real of course)and chops him while screeming "There can be only One!!!" He was so embarrased:D

Anyway I was just reminded of it by the things you described. It would be really cool if they could make those things in the game

This trailer really fucked me off somewhat. Where's the gameplay? Where's anything of value? Where's some fucking quality? I'm sorry, but there's no trust in a product that's less than a tech demo this close to release.

And shit, that PS3 case that appears at the end doesn't even look like a Blu-ray case ...
