Hideki Kamiya: 'Nothing wrong with Bayonetta 2' photo

One of the interesting things about blogging about videogames is that, in a lot of ways, people in the industry make my job relatively easy. For example, while I was playing Borderlands today, Hideki Kamiya started spouting off to Game Informer about a sequel to the well-received Bayonetta. Boom -- instant news.

In an interview for the March edition of GI, Kamiya, who produced Bayonetta, teased that Platinum Games "obviously have love for the work we have created, so I don’t see anything wrong with Bayonetta 2. Personally, I’d like to approach the world of Bayonetta from a different angle, in the form of a spin-off."

Spin-off is a dirty word in most circles, so it's interesting to see Kamiya embrace the idea right off the bat. The obvious choice would be to feature Jeanne in a protagonist role, but there are a slew of dimension-hopping characters to choose from. Not to mention that the environments in Bayonetta are pretty luscious and vivid -- there's no dearth of space to explore.

On the other hand, sequels aren't really Hideki Kamiya's thing. Kamiya cut his teeth at Capcom and has worked on a lot of big name titles, but he made his name as a game director with Devil May Cry. There were three other DMC games, but he didn't work on any of them. In fact, he's never reprised a directorial role -- he directed Resident Evil 2, but none of the other games in the franchise; he directed Viewtiful Joe but not its two sequels (although he wrote the story for them); he directed Okami, but its DS sequel, Okamiden, is being handled by Capcom's Kuniomi Matsushida.

Hell, word is that Kamiya kind-of disowned Okami after leaving Capcom.

In any case, even if a Bayonetta sequel surfaces, it probably won't be for a while, which leaves us plenty of time to speculate: if you had your druthers, what would you do for Bayonetta 2?

Bayonetta: Angel Attack for Wii confirmed! It's going to be a light-gun prequel.

Bigger variety of weapons, enemies and the like. Better story/plot? Other then that, I can't really think of any great improvements. I felt Bayonetta was that style of gaming pretty much perfected.

I think that if he did decide to direct a sequel, somehow, it just might turn out great. I mean, the man has one of the best resumes in all of gaming.

I loved everything about Bayonetta except the horrible story, Route 666, and that boring flying level. Fix those things, and I would happily buy a sequel in a few years.

Oh, and wouldn't Bayonetta fit in perfectly in BlazBlue?

sequel was the first thing that came to mind when i finished bayonetta.

it seems like a lot of people didn't like the fan service levels, but i think they really added a lot to the character of the overall game.

If they do make a Bayonetta 2, Platinum Games better not be lazy and work on the PS3 version that doesn't have load times.

Yes, no Driving bit, no Space-Harrier shmup bit, less spamming Grace and Glory to make it 'harder' and itl be golden.

A 2player Bayoneeta & Jeanne co-op would be awesome.

The good thing is that there are 3 entire universes and time-travel possible so the content of the sequel could be anything.

Grace and Glory are the reason I cant beat the first level on hard. the fan service levels are a little annoying but at a bit of variety.

Perhaps an origin tale, where we'll learn that Bayonetta is the result of an unholy interspecies union between an ostrich, a giraffe, and Sarah Palin's slightly more attractive, younger clone?

The only thing that could go wrong is that Sega does a crappy port again.

I'd make Viewtiful Joe a guest character. Or even vice-versa.

I think Gene, Jack, Viewtiful Joe and Bayonetta all need to team up in a 4-player beat-em-up. The Devil May Cry cast fit in just fine in VJ: Red Hot Rumble, so why not?

I definitely see spin-off. I mean spoiler alert (kinda) but who the hell else can Bayonetta fight besides the final boss?

Also, keep Grace and Glory (agni + Rudra callback) but lose Gracious and Glorious and all the other more difficult palette swaps.

It's going to be a Bayonetta reboot. Right? That's what the industry is into right now, right?

Personally, I'd enjoy a prequel involving the witch hunts. Instead of angels, you can kick human ass, too!
