Hey PS3 Virtua Tennis: No online for you! photo

While I brought news earlier today that both the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 would see Virtua Tennis 3 in 1080p, Gamasutra confirmed through SEGA that the game won't have any online play for the PS3. WTF?

In speaking with a Sega representative, the company confirmed that online support will be specific to the Xbox 360, while the PlayStation 3 version will include added support for the PS3 controller's tilt functionality in lieu of being able to play online. Both versions, however, will include support for 1080p resolution.

“What we really wanted to do was focus on making each version unique,” commented a Sega representative, “and so with the Xbox Live features and the SIXAXIS tilt functionality, we think that each version will offer players an unique experience.”

Sony, please don't make the PS3 another online disaster like the PS2. You have an awesome system, stop f*cking it up!

So you are telling me my PS3 is awesome? What do I need to do so I can see this alleged awesomeness?

I don't about Virtua Tennis but if other multiplatform games start coming out with no online or crappy online on the PS4 its not gonna be good.

Taking away online does not make it unique. It makes it inferior. Do they think we're stupid?

I think the point is Sony still isn't focusing any real attention to online play and how huge it has become. Maybe since there is such a huge Wii craze right now, they are trying to appeal with the "innovative" new gameplay crowd. Regardless, this is a very stupid thing to do and the gamers certainly take notice.

Why can't they have both tilt functionality and online capability? Sounds more like a punishment for owning a ps3.

@ Scrap

Probably for the same reason they can't have vibration and tilt functionality at the same time.

Remember the way sony's ps3 online service is free? That's because they charge the developers for it. I'm guessing that could be a reason here.

I agree James. But that's a situation where Sony should be stepping in and saying, "Dude, put dat shit online, we're gonna look horrible!"

But they don't. They are arrogant and/or clueless.

Rob, true i hope most blame isn't on Sony for this....

maybe if they at least said they are having problems and will have update to add it who knows... The fact remains that out of Sony house people have made a couple games doing online fine.... And I think of Sega and all the MP games they have and maybe some is Sony fault but i see most of it as Sega inexperience fault. (In the end i'll prolly play the game and never play a game online, i never played top spin 2 online, just like quick tennis games for in house temporary fun, kinda like a wii.)

Heres a stupid question, how exactly would SIXAXIS work for Virtua Tennis? Do you just tilt the controller from left to right to move, or would you be able to use it as a racket (wii tennis)?

I had no idea that was why their online service was free, their system is hard to develop for, they get charge to have their games get online play, developers must hate them.

Remember, people, this is Sega, they of SegaNet, which was a kick-ass online gaming service back in the day. If VT isn't online, it's either a policy decision or something Sony is doing (or not doing) is stopping them. If they wanted VT online, they could pull it off, no problem, provided they are given the proper support by the platform holder.

Reminds me of the Cube getting Splinter Cell PT/CT with online removed (understandable) with nothing but connectivity added. To top it off, it arrived several weeks or months than the Xbox/PS2 versions. Go figure. In that case they should've given something like CT's co-op mode to the Cube's PT to replace the missing feature.

Well this sucks...

I'm not a hardcore fan of tenis but this just guaranteed that I won't be getting this game. Not even for $25.

Hopefully other developers will save us PS3 owners from feeling like idiots for not listening to Sony's bad PR.

He dicho.

Summary of the story: SEGA chooses to not put online play in THEIR OWN game. Sony you suck!

Someone explain that cretinous line of reasoning please. How is Sony responsible for Sega adding or not adding online play? If other companies can manage it on the PS3 (Resistance has excellent online play) then why not Sega?

Seriously Summa, the PS3 is an 'awesome system'? Explain? Lack of any serious games out aside from resistance? An online system that has proven to be a failure in the past? Games that run like ass or look worse than games on a system that has been out for over a year, even though they had twice the amount of time to work in them?

A company that lies to you, then rapes your ass once they've lured you into their house, then out of spite spits in your face afterwards then after all that they rob you while your laying violated on the ground crying does not sound like they produce an 'Awesome' system of any sort and certainly shouldn't be supported.

Jeez, Sony really needs to step up its game. All they really had to do was copy the xbox live model and it would have been at least decent. It seems they were too concentrated on all this advanced tech and couldnt even get the basics right.

Its still new, so theres a chance it could be okay if they fix things. But it is a little scary.

Unless I'm mistaken, the developer has to set up it's own servers to do online with the PS3. That means maintaining said servers, that costs money. I can understand why the dev wouldn't want to shoulder the extra (ongoing) cost to have online multi-player on the PS3.

I really don;t think tilt control would even be that great in Virtua Tennis.

I can understand giving different consols something different. Making online vs. tilt control is NOT the way to do it. Different items of clothing/rackets, different tournaments or venues, are great ways to do it. I can only guess that M$ makes it very easy for developers to get online, while Sony's still trying to figure out what the hell they're doing. To say they don't want to emphasize their online component is a cop-out. When they were releasing the system they were trying to lure the 10 million 360 owners by saying "hey, why pay 60 bucks when you can have the same for FREE!" I really loved my PS2, but the ease of finding friends, getting online, and having a great online experience (but with no browser...) has been making me a M$ fanboy faster than I care to admit it. Get your act together, Sony, and maybe I'll consider buying your system. The more I can get the same or better experience on the 360 vs. the PS3 on the same games, the longer it will be before I get one.

PS3 has very few good games/other software as its trump card. Resistance Fall of man, Motorstorm, the formula 1 game and the possibility of installing linux.Virtua Tennis is a disaster due to lack of online play. But guess what, the online play in the XBOX360 version is goofy too!. It makes topspin2 look like the best tennis game ever. I Guess if we really need to see good games, Microsoft and Sony need to get it out of their own development studios. 3rd party companies are not trustworthy since they are chasing money and nothing else. So far PS3 has been a disaster. It can only get better from here and sony will make us terribly disgruntled pS3 users not feeling like jerks.
