Hey, it's Ludum Dare 22 and Minicraft! photo

If you follow the indie gaming scene, you're most likely aware of the fact that the 22nd Ludum Dare, a 48-hour game development competition, was this weekend. A per usual, a theme was given at the start of the event and participants had 2 days to build a qualifying game from the ground up. This year's theme was "Alone."

Internet darling Markus "Notch" Perrson decided to livestream his efforts and, as always, it's quite impressive to see it all in action. His offering, Minicraft, takes some obvious bits from its voxelated big brother -- crafting, zombies, slimes, mining -- but it does have its own personality.

I wish we could take a look at each of the over 600 entrants, but... damn that's a lot. If you see anything particularly exciting though, let us know below!

how does one follow the indie gaming scene apart from following destructoid?
aren't you guys supposed to report things like this?
I'm not sure, I've wanted a decent news platform for indie games for a while.

I'm glad that you love all things Minecraft, but there are a lot of other fantastic entries other than Markus Perrson's :\

So cool that he livestreamed his work. I'm sure there are all sorts of budding game creators and fans out there who are going to be incredibly happy this sort of thing is available for them.

As cool as watching him program was, I'm a bit disappointed that last years challenge resulted in pretty much a different style of minecraft, and then this year...a different version of minecraft.

"Mmmm, this years topic, death? Ooh, minecraft!"
"Mmmm, this years topic, taxes? ooh, minecraft!".

>_>

Thanks for the news Liam. More websites need to support the indie scene.

@AielSavage: It's a contest where games are developed over 48 hours. What did you expect?

PS: You're a dickhead.

Im sure this is something like a freestyle rap battle its very in the moment but its a yearly contest, not like u walk up to mcdonalds and be like "yaaaaaaa ill take an original game please by the way u have 2 days to make it" there is some pre thought and prep based on past experiences

It's not a yearly contest...It's every 4 months. Notch made one for the previous one too. I think it was some 1st-person maze escape.

Article needs edited.

@Stardog, he did indeed.

Liam, I'm going to have a look at the contestans of this round, and I'm sure I'm gonna find many developers who could use more publicity than Notch. What would have been nice would have been something like Dtoid's personal top 5 or something. Consider it.

True Notch doesn't really need any more publicity however this is certainly a two way street. More people probably know about or are aware of Notch in passing than they do the Ludum Dare. Now more people know about the Ludum Dare than did previously.

I would certainly love to see a destructoid top X list, Would be really nice if Destructoid did more Ludum Dare coverage in general.

Watching Notch code that game yesterday was almost like the equivalent of the nerd Superbowl. This could seriously be an Event, where as now its still something but only if you know of its existence.

I say bring it to the masses! Make it happen Destructoid!
