Here you go: Your PS3 Slim images and details photo

The new PlayStation 3, officially known as the CECH-2000A, has finally been revealed. You know it better as the "PS3 Slim," and it'll be available on September 1 for $299.99.

The console is a lot like the one that's sitting in the living rooms of gamers now, complete with a 120 GB hard drive and all of the same inputs and outputs you've come to expect. Except it's smaller ... much smaller. More specifically, Sony is saying its thickness and weight are "approximately two-thirds" that of the 60 GB launch console, thanks to some fancy new internal design architecture. Also reduced by two-thirds is the console's power consumption, which will mean softer fan noise when you're rocking Uncharted 2 this holiday.

The "BRAVIA Sync" feature is also new for the smaller PS3. If you're the proud owner of a BRAVIA TV, using an HDMI cable to connect the console to it will allow you to control the XMB on the TV using the PS3. You can even activate "system standby," which will automatically turn off your PS3 when the television is turned off.

Heads up to those interested in installing Linux on your Sony console -- it's not happening with the PS3 Slim. The "Install Other OS" feature has been removed from the console, as (and these are Sony's words) "the new PS3 system will focus on delivering games and other entertainment content." So there goes that.

Hit the jump for the full system specs, if you're into that kind of thing.

I like that they ditched the Spiderman font and stuck with the traditional PS family curvy letter style.

So, for the less techno-ready-mindies, such as myself, does this come with and work on non-HDTVs?

And will it be awesome?

I'm half disappointed they ditched the Install Other OS feature, but on the other hand, I can't imagine that many people used it. I hope that old style PS3s still support it after firmware revisions come out.

I'm so glad we picked up our 60 gig when we did. BC is important to me. There are a lot of PS2 games I want to play and the PS2 controller doesn't reach the couch. I love the wirelessness of the DualShock3.

We will still probably get the Slim for upstairs. Who can say no to a $300 redesigned PS3?

be advised guys they are working on getting PS2 games on PS3 through a firmware update. Its probably not in 3.0 but look for it shortly after. My god some people are NEVER happy. I can't stand all these whiners. "Pamper me! Baby me!" get over it.

There's no port to upgrade the hard drive in any of the pictures. I'm guessing that's what the Phat has over the Slim.

It looks like those cheap knock off version of the PS3. It is like Sony stripped off the the glossy surface of the original and tacked on some plastic cover.

Well at least is slim right?

I really hate the internet, Sony finally gives you people exactly what you want, and all you fuckers can focus on is "OMG IT DONT GOT BC WTF DAWG"

If you want BC, you probably have ps2 games, if you have ps2 games, most of you have a fucking ps2, so fucking plug it in and shut the fuck up. It would be great if it were included, but if it makes it cheaper for us for them to not include it then so be it. The ps3 is for PS3 games, which has quite the library now, unlike it did when it launched. BC was way more important then, when it was more of a transition system from the ps2 then replacing it.

BC might come in software emulation, but its dead from hardware, so fucking deal with it and shut up already.

Bittersweet, been waiting for the price drop and glad I can finally pick up a PS3, but I still wish it was PS2 compatible. Ah well, I'll likely pick one up anyways, maybe a self x-mas present... or convince someone else to get it for me for x-mas... or get it cheap on boxing day, the options are endless!

Complain all you like. A smaller, cheaper, PS3 with lots of storage in time for the holidays is IMO a good move. I hope retailers will package a game bundle with it, if they can do that I think it will sell well. Maybe not as well as the 360 but I think much better than last year.
Justice's Avatar - Comment posted on 08/18/2009 14:13

Backwards compatibility is so unimportant it's not funny, but upgrading the hard drive will be important in the long run methinks becaue some much online media content is going to be released. 120GB might seem fairly big, but it won't be enough. Hopefully someone will change the hard drive successfully within a few days of release.

I like the design a little better, but I have no real reason to get another PS3 since my fatty does everything I need right now. I loved the PS2 redesign so I picked that up asap, but without BC this is a step back for me so no thanks.

Hope Sony does alright this year for rolling out another sku. They still have a good winter release schedule coming up so hopefully if they kick up the advertising for the games, all the children can be happy.

What viciousboston and the reborn said.

Yes, BC would be nice, but for goodness sakes, you guys had over two years to save up for a console that sells in flea markets for less than a new game. Granted, you might have brought other stuff, or consoles. But I can go down to my local gamestaion and buy a PS2 for 10 pounds less then I brought infamous for.

Yes, BC would be nice, I am not denying that, but how hard is it to set as aside a little money for a used ps2? Surely you people must, at least, save a little money? Ok, let's leave the used PS2, a new, slim, one can also be dirt cheap, sony recently lowered the price to under a 100 pounds, but I have seen them cheaper, around 80 pounds I believe.

Buying a console you wanted for ages over [i]two[/] new games, what seems the better investment to the majority of people?

I hope I am not being a dick, but people, why deny yourself a console of one, old, beaten to death issue? Especially when the remedy is so easily available?

@The Reborn

LOL I know man. I should have known that's what people would bitch about especially when they release a pretty sweet little console with an awesome price point.

And who the hell doesn't own a PS2? That's just sad that people have missed out on that many great games for so long.

@funran: The Software emulation IS there, Sony is just refusing to implement it.

I mean, MS does it, they've been doing it, they've dropped SKU's and prices without sacrificing it. Why can't Sony?
