Destructoid is gaming news, community, videos, and sometimes love. Take the tour or jump in with Facebook:

The first gameplay footage for BioShock 2 has finally arrived. In it we see the Big Sister showing who's boss, some underwater gameplay and just how much of a badass the first Big Daddy is. Just seeing how fast the Big Sister can move is already getting me pretty excited to fight her in the game. Plus, she's kind of hot in a weird, disturbing way.

The video also shows how the Big Daddy can use Plasmids and his weapons together at the same time. The Big Daddy makes short work of all the incoming Splicers while he defends his Little Sister. You can check it all out for yourself after the break.

For more info on the game, be sure to check back on April 23 for Destructoid's preview of BioShock 2

Thank god I have something to distract me from this worthless essay.

Thanks for twittering this. . .it got me to stop writing even faster than my self-approved every 3 minutes DToid breaks.

Holy Moses. Doesn't look too bad. If people can get over the fact that, yes, this sequel is unnecessary and, no, it's probably not as good as the first game, then I think this will likely be a damned fun experience for most. Given how easily he was dispatching those splicers, I can't wait to see how they up the difficulty.

That said, count me out, if there are extended underwater (as in, in-the-water) sequences. Ugh. That shit creeps me out.

Looks nice...

But everything looks too similar for my liking. The HUD, the particle effects. I got over Bioshock by the time I was done with it... so I was hoping for more substantial change. Let's hope.

I see they have made a slight modifications to the HUD. Some icons seem to have moved a little while a few others have shrunk in size. Oh hey, Tenenbaum is in this as well, nice to see her return as it'll be interesting to see her role in this game. Oh wow, that big sister sure moves fast and really seems to enjoy hopping all over this area, don't tell me that's all sh...

That window is cracking, I'm pretty sure that's not good WATER EVERYWHERE, good thing you have a helmet then, eh?

Combat is presumably going to be the most intriguing change in this installment, but knowing me, I'm going to drill and rivet splicers like there's no tomorrow. Also, voice at the end is pretty spooky.

Looks like refilling your EVE meter will be a bit quicker in this game, and a little less painful. Still not sure how I feel about it, but I definitely feel better having seen some footage.

I was more stunned by that first part. The whole time I was thinking "what's going on?" "Why is Tennenbaum talking to this big daddy?" "who is the big daddy?" The combat looks nice, the plasmid/gun combo is interesting but from a story standpoint that first part was far more striking to me.

I'm tentatively hopeful.

Oh my god, this looks pretty. I hope they keep in the creep factor that made the first one so erie and atmospheric.
I too am intrigued as to how they will keep the combat from getting stale.
And yes I would splice the big sister (despite the fact I heard she "gets around" a lot)

hmmm, I really like the way the Big Sister looks (wish we could see her fight), but I have to agree, it looks a little same-y. Maybe when I see more stuff I'll be converted.

Also, seems like they are going for a "scarier" vibe.

It's funny how when a game is good in a way that is new to people they then complain that the sequel is too much the same. When in reality more of the same is not a bad thing at all.

Those idiot developers, how dare they continue to use the excellent parts of the first game in its sequel? Unless everything is new it's just not worth buying.

Looks scary. I'm not very good at scary games. I needed my younger brother to keep me company when I played the first F.E.A.R.

But coming from someone who hasn't played the first, it looks pretty nifty. I wasn't really sure to believe that you were playing as a Big Daddy, even when those first scans showed up. Maybe one day I'll grow a pair and pick the first up.

When the original was a fresh take on the FPS genre in both gameplay and art direction, it would be disheartening if the new developers of the sequel did little to innovate even further.

I agree that people tend to be hypocritical of change/lack of change in sequels.... but I rarely do this. As I stated before... I basically found myself going through the motions towards the end of my time with Bioshock, because I was a bit bored with the game.

If anything, I was hoping they would take further influence from System Shock 2 or Deus Ex, and take the game in an RPG/Shooter direction, as opposed to the FPS of the first title.

@Endsteim : Can see how you would want more rpg/shooter elements but as someone who was most certainly not bored torwards the end of Bioshock, I'm absolutely fine with what I just saw. Hopefully when the game is released we can all be satisfied with the product presented to us.

Also, kinda hope there is a drill attack where you skewer a splicer and it makes that awful drilling sound and the splicer writhes a bit and falls off. That would be neat.

I came.

Bioshock's true genius wasn't tied to it's gameplay, IMO. The gameplay was certainly non-standard FPS fare, upgradable weapons, different upgrade paths in plasmids and weapons, the roaming mini-boss battles with big daddies, but it wasn't the meat of the experience. The game was a monument to storytelling. It used a lot of common conventions, the half-life in game cutscenes, plus the gathered audio notes and radio conversations, but it told a story with a depth that's unrivaled in gaming. It's certainly not PEN/Faulkner material, I don't think, but nothing in a game i've ever played comes close to the level of esoteric thought and real-world relativity that Bioshock's dystopic narrative relayed so successfully.

If Bioshock 2 adds FPS frills without making the core storytelling experience as enriching as the first game, then it will fail.

But seriously, Wow. Scary, beautiful, overwhelming. I can't wait.

And here I sit alone, wondering what this studio could have done with a new independent property that borrowed mechanics from Bioshock, or perhaps, was completely original.

I'll likely give this its fair share, but I can't say I'm too thrilled about seeing a trailer full of so much action. Don't jump down my throat now, I'm just throwing out my opinion. Apologies if I honestly offended you. Of course if I did, then perhaps you should STFUAJPG.

Once again, im with Endsteim..

The first game was brilliant! By the end I was intrigued to see how the story was going to unfold. But, the gameplay was pretty much stuck in its ways by then and I was getting a little tired of it [even though we were offered that wonderful treat]. If I wanted to play that same kind of game, in the same environments and wrapped with the same design choices; Then, instead of paying another £40 for it.. I would just play the first game again!?

Wait, what happened to all the righteous anger I was hearing about this game just yesterday?

I really don't think that we support sequels over original concepts. It's just sickening really. How can you call yourself a "true gamer" and support this shit?

Now excuse me, I've got to go play Fallout 3 and Final Fantasy 6.

I just got a Hard-on...

I think it's going to be a great game, so long as they stay true to the story and make rapture as rich and full of detail as the first game. If they start to drift off into too much science fiction/ fantasy it might ruin the game.

@ Bwark-Kupo:

I completely agree. In fact it would have been refreshing to do a game very similar to this in a space station. Without making it too much like Dead Space.

Yeh, exactly. How are so many people content to be so hypocritical about shit like this? In the last couple of weeks we've heard nothing but outrage from people demanding that this not just be a revisit to Rapture, and that you'd better not play as a Big Daddie the whole time, and that escort missions are shit blah blah blah.

The second they see footage it's as if no one ever openend their mouths. Well gues what? This DOES look just like Bioshock 1. There ARE escort missions (the firefight at the end is to protect a little sister - look closely). The setting IS still Rapture. And you ARE just Jack with drill.

Will Bioshock 2 be any good? Who knows? Will the movie be any good? Who knows? Will the internet still be filled up with the vaccuous proclamations of outrage from the inumerable vapid cunts that troll gaming sites? You betcha. Sad.

the gameplay looks amazing, but I'm still worried about the story. I don't want the Big Daddies explained to me. I don't wanna see the downfall of Rapture. those were plot elements of the first game that I don't want to be explained. I'm not condemning this game or anything, I'm just really sceptical.

Game looks like it should be fun. . . the combat in the first game, as was said before isn't what made it great, it was the story. Hopefully that won't changein this one.

I wanna know why Tennenbaum wants you to get after the big sister so much... any ideas?

Looks like more of the same, but I'm not complaining. Kinda weird how you just lose your drill on your right hand when you get pushed underwater though? I mean, apparently you can swap weapons on the fly and all that, but putting a giant drill away would take me more than a split second if I was pushed underwater :D

I was pretty hyped when this game was announced but I ignored something big: using plasmids at the same time as other weapons. It doesn't look right, what am I going to be walking around with both arms extended like Frankenstein? I noticed at the beginning of the video that only the drill was visible but in combat why not use this powerful yet stupid looking update?

I wonder how long it will be until we get more complaints about how it's not different enough from BioShock like we did with RE5/RE4.

I hadn't really been paying attention to BS2 yet, but the underwater portion was pretty neat. It would be sad if this turns out to be only decent, because they have got ample gameplay possibilities to work with here.

@grassr00ts: The Big Sister was one of the Little Sisters that Jack and Bridgette Tenenbaum escaped with at the end of Bioshock. During the past 10 years she found a way to return to Rapture, augmented herself into the Big Sister, and proceeded to rule over the city as a sort of equalizing force. When she started going out and kidnapping girls, I'd guess Tenenbaum took notice and took action out of her responsibility.

I was hoping Bioshock 2 wouldn't take place in Rapture, but be a new setting based on the mythos of Bioshock.

Can I preorder this yet?

There are escort missions if you want them. When you find a loose little sister you can harvest her adam on the spot or invite to climb up on your back and travel the level with you. When she finds a corpse full of adam, she'll climb down and extract it. During that time you defend her and when she's down she climbs back on and gives you your dose of what she's collected.

I generally follow John Carpenter's feelings about sequels. When an audience wants a sequel, they're really asking for more of the same. A continuation or remake of the first film. I haven't had enough of Rapture. I've replayed it several times already and I just started again. More of the same is all I really want.
