What does the release of the iPad mean for gamers? That debate will continue -- but how many of you out there have actually seen Apple's new gorgeous gizmo in action?

With 60 games and a track record of 55 million downloads, Gameloft's Marck Hickey was the opening act for all things gaming when he revealed the iPad version of their Halo-clone, N.O.V.A. Customizable user interface, high-resolution graphics, and some pretty wicked multi-touch gestures are only a few things revealed on their current build, which only took three weeks to code.

Travis Boatman with EA Mobile followed, showcasing the iPad's performance and horsepower with a re-tooled Need For Speed Shift. Graphics, speed and comprehensive control mapping -- does Shift on the iPad truly represent what a familiar racing title plays like on a radically different piece of hardware?

Do these demos make you believe in Apple's vision of gaming on the iPad? Rage on.

Nope still gay. I'm sorry but the iPad had so much potential to be an amazing piece of hardware, then they went and ruined it and gave it the iPhone OS which did nothing but turn it into an over sized iPhone, awesome.

Sorry, but I will never trust full touch screen gaming.

I want buttons, somewhere.

Yep, my feelings exactly. I would have totally bought one had it had OSX. Now I just want it to go away forever.
And this is coming from an enormous Apple whore.

I agree, even if they were going to include the iPhone OS, the lack of removable media storage, USB ports, flash support and multitasking (which all of these have been said many times already, Im sure) is what killed it for me.

Gaming just seems like it would be awkward on this. Although I do think RTS games would work surprisingly well.

They all look pretty neat, but I'm pretty sure it's because the developers have it on EASY or some demo mode where gameplay is tailored to a speech. I doubt this crap will work as smooth once the device is released.

I have no doubts they can make great games for the platform, but it's just awkward having no buttons whatsoever. I'll give it a try if a buddy of mine happens to buy it, but I wouldn't get this for the sole purpose of gaming. I think as gamers we just need to accept that, at least for now, we shouldn't care so much about all these Apple products and what they mean for gaming. Apple has made it pretty clear they aren't in it themselves to support hardcore gaming, it's all up to the other developers, and those hardcore games are few and far between.

The whole concept is ultimately a failure when the demonstrator attempts to throw grenades by swiping 2 fingers across the screen. On the first attempt, the game mistakenly thinks he's trying to look upwards rather than throw grenades. If the game is worth a shit, a small mistake like that would have caused him to be killed by an incoming enemy. FPS games are about lightning quick reflexes and precision controls. Plus, who really wants to bother putting 3 fingers on the screen and rotating them to open a door when they could just hit the space bar. Gimmicky Hardware is gimmicky.

Nice graphics but lack of functionality of the hardware such as ports and the lockdown on the software side just makes this look like another crappy 1st gen release of an Apple product.

They should have a camera on the demoers head so that we can see his hands all over the screen instead of just the pretty game footage projected up there. What we're seeing is not what he's seeing.

FPS's may not do all that well on the iPad, but some games could do very, very well, i.e. games not requiring that same level of precise/accurate control. We're not going to see any Mass Effect or Uncharted quality games on it, obviously, and there's going to be a lot of crap shovelware to sift through, just like the iPhone/iPod. But, also, there's going to be some gems hidden in there that are great for passing some time on the go. RPG's and RTS's could be great, and plenty of other types of games. If you're looking at the iPad and criticizing it because it can't handle FPS's as well as a 360, then you're really looking at it wrong, in my opinion. It's not a dedicated game system, and it's not going to do some things as well as those systems do, in the same way as a PSP or DS is not exactly ideal for anything other than games.

Personally I can't wait to get my hands on one of these. Would it be nice to have a fully reworked version of OS X? Sure, I guess. But the iPhone OS is great too, and with the changes they've made for the iPad, I think it will be just right. Sure, there are some things I wish would be different, but for the price and the polish I don't see anything else comparable. And if you don't like touch screens, that's fine, but really they are anything but gimmicky, and they aren't going away anytime soon.

No one is criticizing it because it can't handle FPS's , we are criticizing it because it's a worthless piece of hardware, why waste your money on this oversized iPhone/iTouch, just fucking buy a touch at least it fits in your pocket and you get all the same features. The iPad needed OSX, and it Needs at least a one USB port I mean come the fuck on! As it is it's useless, just buy a real tablet.

Eh, I disagree. The comments I'm referring to are those talking about how the demo of NOVA controlled. I think it's anything but worthless. It's positioned to compete with netbooks, and I think for a lot of people it will compete pretty well. There have been few times that I've wished I had my laptop handy instead of my iPhone for any other reason than it has a bigger screen while I'm away from home. What exactly are you going to need to hook up by USB that can't be connected either by bluetooth or the dock connection with an adapter?

Ugh, and NOVA is so freakin' BORING!

I got to the last level and just lost interest. The controls are ok, but NOVA is so generic it's not even funny.

The Ipad is a Netbook divided by an Iphone
doesn't have the funcionality of a netbook, nor the portability of an Iphone; It's just for Snobs to show off :D

A large amount usb powered devices that don't have bluetooth, How about I'm out of the country I brought my iPad thinking oh that's all I'll need, I take some photos with my digital camera decide I want to send them to my friends and family or post them on flickr, oh wait what's this the iPad has no usb slot for me to hook up my camera now what? Oh just hook the camera up to the nearest computer and transfer that way you say? I should of just brought a fucking netbook or a laptop then at least they can do something that simple. If the iPad is meant to compete with netbooks then it fails completely, if it was meant to compete with tablet pc's it also fails. It's missing way to many key features that other tablets/netbooks come standard with and at half the asking price.

It controlled pretty poorly. Epic fail with the grenade throw. Also, lets see you highlight a few enemies while they are shooting at you.

Well, as for the camera no I wouldn't say hook it up to a computer. I'd say use the dock connector's camera adapter, which as the name says is specifically for this purpose. Or bluetooth/wi-fi if the camera supports it.

For a controller, there may be a bluetooth solution at somepoint also, but I wouldn't hold my breath for that.

I do the same thing with %80 of the videos on here.

"Well then fuck it, I don't care that bad"
And then I just keep scrolling.

Well, Destrutoid gave NOVA a 9, i can't imagine it being worse on a large screen with more comprehensive/customizable controls. This demo showed some interesting touch-control ideas which seem to work out really well.

It's certainly a more useful device than the overpriced, under-designed piece of garbage that is the PSP, and even the measly iPhone 3.0 had the equivelent of 2x PS2 GPU's. So yes, there is potential for games. In fact, given that the DS's best games rely almost entirely on touch controls, the Iphone can be, if properly utilized, a far superior system. (Chinatown Wars is best played on the iPhone, for sure.)

People don't seem to understand that the iPad is not being designed for games, so i don't know what the fuck everybody is in such a huff about. It's targeting the Netbook market. Hypothetically if you were looking for a netbook there would be no reason to get anything other than the iPad, because netbooks are largely worthless and the Ipad would indeed do everything they do minus the uglyness, (and as a bonus have some nifty gaming capabilities.) I say hypothetically, however, because the iPad doesn't support flash, and as 90% of the internet requires flash, the iPad is consequently a complete waste of time.

Word... almost. The flash thing will be a pain and a sticking point for some, but not really for me. Not getting Hulu or others will suck, but they will eventually make the move to other formats, similar to YouTube and Vimeo in moving to HTML5. Thank goodness. I have to wonder,of that 90/75/80 whatever % of the internet you see on various sites talking about this, just how much of that % is flash supported ads? Even if it's only 1%, to me that's a selling point, not a negative. ClickToFlash (blocks flash content until you click it) is the greatest plugin I've ever downloaded. I'm sure PC's have a similar thing.

Adobe can't be troubled to fix flash for Apple products (it is GARBAGE on macs), and as long as other solutions are available, I don't see why Apple should have to design their products around Flash. As far as I'm concerned, bravo to Apple for giving Flash the finger. And if Adobe ever does get off their collective asses and actually fix it, I'm sure it would take little more than a software update to add it.

Another point that's not being given all that much attention, these game demos were coded in 3 weeks. Again, 3 weeks. To be honest I'd have been happy with decent looking videos, much less actual playable builds on a relatively new platform.
