Here's what Heavy Rain's 'The Taxidermist' DLC looks like photo

If you're hungry for more Heavy Rain, then you'll be pleased to know that it's getting episodic DLC, so you can keep enjoying that top-notch writing and quality acting. The first episode is The Taxidermist, and Sony has released some screens to let you all see what it looks like.

It will be interesting to see how well these DLC episodes sell. Heavy Rain had fantastic launch sales, but the reaction from those paying customers has been very split, with some adoring the game, and others hating it. We'll soon get to see who thought the Heavy Rain experience was worth extending and how that stacks up against initial sales.

How about you lot? Who's looking forward to getting the DLC, or was European enough to get it already?

Actually this is free to people who preordered from Amazon. I expected something more biting from you though.

I got this using my pre-order code and this is something no one should pay for. It took me five minutes to beat and there's only five endingss, most of which I can guess what happens. Pretty much it takes place before the main story and it revolves around Madisson investigating an origami killer suspect.

It's so cute when Jim tries to take lessons in "journalism" from Fox News. When you've got a vast majority of people on one side and at best a small handful on the other that does not make opinion "split" on the topic. Aside from a few self-important douchebags who think it makes them look smart and edgy (or whatever) to take shots at Heavy Rain I haven't seen anyone who dislikes it.

I'm actually very excited for the DLC, because the shit that Heavy Rain doesn't do well (tell a sprawling, novelistic story; have red herrings that mean something to the narrative beyond simply faking the player out; etc. etc.) isn't really an issue in a short-form narrative. Think about it: HR does scenes very well indeed. It's when all those interesting and fun scenes have to add up to something that it crumbles to dust.

Granted, there's also that awful voice acting and dialogue, but that bothers me much less if I only have to play one or two scenes.

no that is a solid point a genre of game that really has not been developed has big sales but then some people who buy it say "oh wait i really don't like this type of game." and then don't get the DLC and then you can say SEEE SEEEEEEEEEEEE I TOLD YOU SOOOOOOOOOOOO! its a perfect way to make a point that is dumb.

You must not have looked very hard if you think there's no one that dislikes Heavy Rain. There have been tons of C-blogs for both sides, and Jim's article was riddled with just as many commenters agreeing with him as there were disagreeing. Of course, I suppose you could just stick to your 'label everyone who disliked the game as doing it for popularity instead of actually having a valid opinion' mentality, if that works best for you.

I am sort of looking forward to the DLC, maybe it will patch up a few holes in the story.

@genebeef: although i did love heavy rain, i was a bit miffed about the whole, SPOILERS BUT MOST PEOPLE ALREADY KNOW, Scott Shelby being the origami killer, made absolutely no sense whatsoever, why would a serial killer spend so much time leading the life of a p.i when hardly anyone ever notices who he is, and when the do it's always instigated by him. Pinning the blame on Gordi 'even though he did kill a kid' was a waste of time and only got him in more trouble, which he would have avoided if he hadn't had stuck his fat nose in. Also, the typewriter scene didn't make any sense, if we are playing a serial killer, why suspend the inevitable. But other than that, and probably many more plot holes , great game, wait, ''game''

Having played it (cos I is well cool and got the Dlc with the special edition innit) it works to the strengths of the gsme rather than its weaknesses.
Go somewhere to find origami killer, its not, but its a rent a crazy.
Fun stuff and it turns out the hardest ending to get (there are 5) is to alert the cops yet SOMEHOW stay in the house without dying. Voice work is way better in it too.

Hmmm lot of hate on HR. I loved it! See I have gamed since I could move, and as of late I hadn't been playing games. Because it was all the same thing! Nothing fresh(ish) to play.

That's why I got HR! And play I did, solid playtime, I was happy to be gaming again. Because something was interesting enough to play solid.

SPOILER!!!
@crazy
I believe his deep seeded need to find a father capable of trying to save his son made him investigate it. Think about it, it's a perfect cover for coming ip and eventually getting out of them what happened to the father of the kid. If he just walked up and asked it would be suss. But as a PI, it's not expected and he can ask such questions.

Not saying it was a solid plot! But I made enough sense of it to be very happy with it! I mean I was adamant from go it was Blake haha

Plus I think Shelby constantly questioning the mothers of the kids he killed was because A) he was sick and derranged lol
and
B) because he did want to comfort them. As he never wanted to Hurt the mothers, only the fathers. I mean he still visited his mum. He wanted to lessen the pain for them in a way.

My thoughts anyway

Haha, oh wow, Jim. You just won't give it up will you?

Funny, I don't see any other writers on this site, or any other site with integrity bashing a game they dislike in every (even non related news) article they write about it. Two features going in deapth about how much you hate it apparently isn't enough. Feeling insecure, eh?

Even more pathetic is the fact that you keep claiming how "split" the reaction to the game has been. lol, even you know that's bullshit.

Are you reading some of the other comments to this article? Obviously, some people did not like the game. And don't you dare just insult their way of thinking just because they aren't of the same mindset as you are.

P.S. I liked the game, but I'm not so stupid to think that everybody will like MY games or MY systems. Jim Sterling gave a review of what he thought of the game. People thought it was too low (When has a 7/10 been low?), so he made another article that was obvious flamebait (Which every flamer took).

It's really short but it offers a lot more freedom than the main game. The whole thing can end in different ways and even then you can play it multiple ways for each ending. For those wondering, it's a prequel to the main story and not really all that related - I'd assume it's non-canon too since Madison can die in a couple of the endings.

Basically - very short but good replay value, and the atmosphere in it is great. If the rest of the DLC is similar I'll be a happy bunny (though I'd like some plot hole fixes too kfanx).

**SPOILERS**

Also one of the endings has you killing the killer with a chainsaw to the balls. Awesomesauce.

I got The Taxidermist with my special edition and it's a good self contained story although it is very brief and the endings are nothing more than the front page of the newspaper Madison writes for.

If you liked Heavy Rain it's still worth picking up though even if it doesn't add much insight to Madison as a character.

You clearly didn't hear the Heavy Rain Spoilertoid. The Destructoid staff seems pretty unified on their opinion of Heavy Rain.
As for other reviewers, eh, it's all opinion. I really though the game was very stale and the uncanny valley literally terrified me at times, but it wasn't a terrible game. I'd say Jim's 7.5 was pretty much exactly how good the game was.
To be brutally honest, look back on it next year or the year after. I really don't think people will see the glorious revelation they are claiming this is currently.

The funny part about this article is seeing the commenters chiming in about Jim "bashing Heavy Rain" in this article when the closest he comes to that is the line about the quality of writing and acting, and even that is so worded that one would be hard-pressed to call it even derisive.

Seems they only saw three things: Who wrote the piece, the fact that it was about Heavy Rain, and then looked at the header image and immediately set to posting.

The fact that they have such a dislike for him because he doesn't fawn over every game they want him to is just very creepy.

He's written only a few articles about the game, talking about how much he'd looked forward to it and enjoyed it apart from the hack writing (This is David Cage, for chrissakes, he's good at scenes like someone else pointed out, larger scale he's not so talented at, and relies too much on "OMG WHAT A TWIST" moments done somewhat cliche -- I remember Indigo Prophecy/Fahrenheit starting off very interesting, but then careening into "Wait...what?" territory halfway through) and gave the game a 7, which is a solid score.

And all his detractors just see "OMG 7 WTF TROLL HARDER STERLING WHY A 7 THIS GAM IS 11 YOU NOT GAMS JURNLIST jim failsterling LOL BASH BASH BASH!!!"

Try actually reading the articles, kids!

No, really, actually read them! Don't just repeat the words, try exercising a little, oh what the hell was it called again...right: Reading COMPREHENSION. Takes thinking that's more than just figuring out what the next key you were going to press on the keyboard.

GAMS JURNLISM.

Although I appreciate the impressive advances Heavy Rain has accomplished, I'm not very excited for the DLC. I mean, recently, I confronted the Origami Killer and beat the game. As exciting and rewarding as the game and ending was, to me, I have no real further interest in it, at the moment. Also, I'm busy with Mega Man 10 and next week my time will be spent with Kratos. Sorry, Heavy Rain. It was fun!

I didn't pre-order Heavy Rain, so I didn't get a code. And I was actually really looking forward to this DLC, five bucks or not.

Until I read here how long it is. Seriously? Less than ten minutes for $5? I can think of a looooooong list of things I could do for five bucks or less that would amuse me for longer than ten minutes.

I got a code when I preorder from gamestop. It's extremely short, around 15 minutes. The 5 different ending adds replay value. I truly don't think it's worth 5$. I'm sort of glad I got it for free.

Having played through the DLC, it's a mixed bag. For one, Madison has a different voice actress, and it threw me immediatley. Second, while it uses the same graphics engine, it's jaggy as hell. If you play through quickly and only get one ending, it will probably take around 15 minutes or so if you look around. If you figure out how to get all 5 endings, it may take you close to a half hour. That said, it's a cool little vignette that is worth playing if you enjoyed the main game. And although I got it for free, $5 really isn't that much when you consider it offers up to about 30 minutes of total playtime, and that it's optional. I've paid $5 on a few XBLA games that didn't offer as much. For better or worse, $5 is the budget price for downloadable games and episodes. If you loved Heavy Rain, you probably pre-ordered and are getting this for free anyway :-P
