Here's the starting line-up for Xbox 360's Games on Demand photo

If there is one thing that's got me excited for Games on Demand more than anything else, it's that I'm now going to have to buy a larger hard drive. Finally! This new service will be open to everyone when the summer Xbox 360 dashboard update hits Tuesday of next week.

For Microsoft's sake, I really hope this method of digital distribution becomes a success. Of course, for that to happen, they're going to need games, and good ones at that. Here are the launch titles that can be beamed directly to your hard drive through the use of Internet magic:

  • Assassin's Creed
  • Burnout Paradise
  • Call of Duty 2
  • Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion
  • Fight Night Round 3
  • Kameo: Elements of Power
  • LEGO Star Wars: The Complete Saga
  • Mass Effect
  • Meet The Robinsons
  • MX vs. ATV Untamed
  • Need for Speed Carbon
  • Need for Speed: Most Wanted
  • Perfect Dark Zero
  • Prey
  • Rockstar Games Presents Table Tennis
  • Sega Rally
  • TEST DRIVE: UNLIMITED
  • Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Vegas
  • Tomb Raider Legend
  • Viva Pinata
  • Viva Pinata 2: Trouble in Paradise
A decent start, wouldn't you say? I'm pleasantly surprised to see both Viva Pinata games making the cut, because if there's one series I feel more people need to play, it's effing Viva Pinata. Except for that mini-game compilation Party Animals; screw that noise.

If anybody was wondering if Kameo was any good. I'll have you know it sucked.

@Bulkmailer

Well, it was a launch title...

Anyway, how much are they going to try and wring out of us for this?

Sony.
Steal this idea.
But for PS2 games instead.

Viva Pinata was the most frustrating game I ever played. Ever. I would spend over an hour trying to get these things to screw like rabbits and Darwinism just wasn't allowing it. Then some douche canoe from up the mountain would come down and blow them up into candy for no reason and then I'd watch all the pinatas eat the remains.

I'm glad Prey is on there though. Too many people give it shit for not having the gameplay of Portal to recognize a unique and fun shooter right under their noses.

I'm also interested to see the pricing scheme, considering Mass Effect is $20 brand new at retail now, and nearly all of these titles are $10 used, or like 200-300 points on Goozex ($10-$15 fake money).

Speaking of Mass Effect, if you're a consumer whore who wants to get one of these games "just because", get Mass Effect: it's that good.

I tried VP2 and I just didn't "get it".

Yeah, hard drives are still going to be issues here. I don't care if the install amounts were lowered with the last update. You'll still take up your entire hard drive in no time, and they don't exactly cost you pocket change.

Wasn't Sonic 06 supposed to be on this list? Maybe they realized that it would make them look bad if they put that game up.

I've been waiting until this launches to get Mass Effect. As far as pricing goes, most if not all of these games are pretty cheap right now, so I don't see a reason to charge more than 1600 magical space dollars for them.

hmm. I'm tempted to buy Burnout Paradise again, just to not have to put my CD in. Its a great pickup and play game...

yarr... :(

If these are cheap, I might actually pick up Viva Pinata 2.

I want to see prices. I saw Rainbow Six Vegas at Gamestop for $6 the other day. I almost bought it, but I'd pay a few extra bucks to download it and not need to worry about media. I wouldn't pay for than 800 points, and I bet it'll be at least 1200, probably 1600.

On the new Inside Xbox streaming vid that shows you a preview of what's coming with the dashboard update, you can see that Mass Effect will be 1600, or $20.

You know, generally I don't mind spending 1200-1600 points on content that you can't get anywhere except via DLC, but I'll be damned if I pay the same amount for crap I can get on Amazon for 10 bucks.

@Magnalon -- I'll end up getting ME to play through again just because my old system was ganked along with the HDD, and I want to have a save file to bring through for ME2

Technically a decent start, but I'm a bit disappointed that there are few interesting titles here for me, with the possible exception of launch trio CoD2, Kameo and Perfect Dark Zero. But where's Crackdown (which I think has been confirmed already)?

I agree about Prey. That game was lots of fun and I loved all the freaky imagery of the organic ship and the upside-down catwalks. Definitely a unique shooter that is underrated.

Trouble in Paradise rocked. Basically a 1.5 of the first game, but fixed tons of stuff. The Sims meets Pokemon = Crack for my wife.

Forgive me for being lazy, but exactly what do you get in ME2 with your ME1 save file if it's not a 1:1 character transfer?

Oh wonderful, I never liked owning copies of my games anyway. It's not like anybody ever plays anything more than a few years old, right? Hooray, digital distribution, taking away all our control over our purchases!

Given the number of retro enthusiasts on Destructoid, I'm confused as to why some of your editors are so positive about this.

The people that are complaining about price and the fact they don't want to download games do realise that they don't have to buy these right? they're just for the people that do.
