It seems that porting/updating GoldenEye for a "next-gen" system has pretty much been a major demand of gamers since companies started porting and revamping old games for new systems. And since that day people have been arguing over which system the game should land on. An HD upgrade on the Xbox 360 has been a common chant by many, but when a new version of GoldenEye was finally revealed it landed on the Wii.
I'm not complaining at all. I love my Wii and I'm happy to have the game on it, but the swirling assumptions and complaints about the game's final destination led me to wonder why the Wii was selected as the console of choice. Julian Widdows, Executive Producer at Activision Blizzard UK gladly answered that question with a tone of finality and defiance.
"Because the console and its audience deserves a cutting edge shooter," he said, "because Eurocom and ATVI have something to prove -- that Nintendo’s machine is underestimated in terms of its ability to deliver serious, credible, mature experiences -- and because it feels so natural to bring GoldenEye home to Nintendo."
There you have it. The Wii deserves this and Eurocom and ATVI want to prove that it does. Good enough reasoning for you? Stay tuned this weekend to find out more as the entire interview goes up then.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
I just don't see "couch play" having the legs it once did in the Halo online play age, and I see this dying out in a few months with a surprise announcement for an "Arcade/PSN" version for $15."
And yes, I can see a XBLA/PSN version like Magnalon is talking about.
Really? I think if anything the console has shown that the best way to create these experiences are threw innovation and art style; rather than the Brown and Grey seen on the other consoles. How are Okami, Fragle and even the Mario games not serious and mature experiences?
Of course "mature" is subjective, but I really hope they aren't using the phrase to mean shooting people...
"and because it feels so natural to bring GoldenEye home to Nintendo."
I call BS; it was a business decision made because the Wii has less competition when it comes to FPS games and a larger demographic than the other consoles. They are hoping that the Bond name will sell this to the masses, aided by nostalgia junkies.
Uhm... wow... yeah like... what @Schismogenesis said and MORE.
I own a Wii so I can play all the Mario games and shit like Donkey Kong Country Returns. The main selling point for me with the Wii IS the nostalgia factor, that and the fact that I know I can rely on Nintendo to deliver a handful of amazing games over the course of the console's life.
I don't buy Nintendo systems for "mature, serious" games. I buy them to have fun.
With all that bullshit said, it would be nice to see Nintendo themselves make some more "adult" games. I'd really like to see what they could do with a violent action game or a shooter. Somehow I think it would possibly be one of the best in it's genre.
"Because Nintendo fanboys will give us more money."
That too, but there's no specific reason for them to make a Golden eye re-make over a new experience for anything other than those reasons anyway.
Activision has a pretty hot looking game in Bloodstone on the way, and porting it to the Wii would be a disaster. I love gaming on my Wii but everyone knows you can't port a game from the PS3/360 to the Wii. It doesn't fly.
They want Bond to collect some money from Wii gamers though. So now we have the return of Goldeneye. Rabbid Bond fans might even talk themselves into buying both Bloodstone and Goldeneye.
Don't misunderstand me though. This Goldeneye update looks decent for a Wii game. As the owner if multiple consoles though I'm looking a little harder at Bloodstone.
They should team up with Atlus to make an M-rated RPG. They've collaborated with many other studios for RPGs, so this shouldn't be any different. They already have Strange Journey on the DS, so I can imagine that happening.
Nintendo owns the Goldeneye 64 source code, Rare didn't get to keep it
Activision is using assets from a game Nintendo owns.
Activision currently has the rights to the James Bond license.
That's the reason Goldeneye is on the Wii.
Any other reason why its on the Wii is PR bullshit; any other argument why it should appear on another console is also bullshit. Why would something Nintendo owns appear on another console not made by Nintendo.
Please sell the ps3 elsewhere. You seem like a nice guy and you're very polite but that doesn't change the fact that you have signed up just to try and sell ps3's.
You are creepy in you're determination to indoctrinate us with every post.
Well, unless Activision paid you to believe that the reason isn't a legal one, in which case I suppose Activision is making you say their PR.
But the point is you don't have to look like a blind sheep doing it.
LOL, no. I am admittedly biased towards the Playstation brand. I'm just saying that the Playstation 3 is capable of doing what Julian Widdows is saying. I'm not trying to sell you anything. Please don't take it the wrong way. :)
P.S.- What happened to your avatar?
I'm in the process of selecting a new one.
You understand the term troll? Because posting off topic like you do could be seen as trolling.
Save the Sony adverts or Sony articles.
I'm sorry if i come across as trolling. I didn't come here to cause trouble. Just sharing my thoughts about gaming. My apologies.
1) It was published by Nintendo back in the day
2) The Bond license is now owned by Activision
3) Rare developed it and designed the levels
Having the game this way takes care of all 3 issues. There was no way it wasn't going to be on at least one Nintendo console (although I'm surprised it's only Nintendo), Activision are obviously publishing it, and have a re-make sorts the Rare issue
I played the junk out of it on the 64 but I will not be picking this up, sorry.
"I can see it being one up on the Wii in giving a cutting edge shooter with motion controls, plus with 1080i HD graphics."
The PS3 actually supports up to 1080p, not just 1080i. That makes it even better!
or PR Bullshit?
Hint: It's PR Bullshit.
haha, my mistake. :)
Quite frankly, no one has really given the Wii a chance to show off what it can do with an exclusive AAA FPS. In the past, Activision has only offered watered down ports of the Call of Duty games (Modern Warfare coming out 2 years later yet each COD porth as sold over a million copies so there's clearly gamers who are interested in wanting the FPS genre on the Wii). The only other developer to offer an exclusive FPS was High Voltage Software. Unfortunately, Conduit did not live up to expectations and turned out to be a mediocre exerience. The dev has the chance to redeem itself with the upcoming release of Conduit 2 and perhaps again with The Grinder (if it is still on track for release on the Wii some time next year).
Retro Studios was the first to really show off the intuitiveness and technical superiority of the Wii remote's IR pointer when compared to dual analog in an FPS-style game with Metroid Prime 3. That was really the reason that got me interested in wanting traditional FPS games on the platform. If Activision and Eurocom are being serious about putting in the effort into making a worthy reimaginging of Golden Eye 007, then it also needs to offer a decent marketing (unlike the shameful release of Modern Warfare Reflex which not only had zero marketing but was completely overshadowed by the launch of Modern Warfare 2) campaign to reflect that, then I don't see why it won't sell well on the Wii.
