Here's the reason why GoldenEye 007 is on the Wii photo

It seems that porting/updating GoldenEye for a "next-gen" system has pretty much been a major demand of gamers since companies started porting and revamping old games for new systems. And since that day people have been arguing over which system the game should land on. An HD upgrade on the Xbox 360 has been a common chant by many, but when a new version of GoldenEye was finally revealed it landed on the Wii.

I'm not complaining at all. I love my Wii and I'm happy to have the game on it, but the swirling assumptions and complaints about the game's final destination led me to wonder why the Wii was selected as the console of choice. Julian Widdows, Executive Producer at Activision Blizzard UK gladly answered that question with a tone of finality and defiance.

"Because the console and its audience deserves a cutting edge shooter," he said, "because Eurocom and ATVI have something to prove -- that Nintendo’s machine is underestimated in terms of its ability to deliver serious, credible, mature experiences -- and because it feels so natural to bring GoldenEye home to Nintendo."

There you have it. The Wii deserves this and Eurocom and ATVI want to prove that it does. Good enough reasoning for you? Stay tuned this weekend to find out more as the entire interview goes up then.

I'll take better online play - the HD argument is moot.

I just don't see "couch play" having the legs it once did in the Halo online play age, and I see this dying out in a few months with a surprise announcement for an "Arcade/PSN" version for $15."

So they want to prove that they can deliver a game that is ugly even by Wii standards? Cause that shit looks terrible. Were they trying to evoke nostalgia from the graphics themselves?

And yes, I can see a XBLA/PSN version like Magnalon is talking about.

I think they may reconsider once the sales numbers start coming in. I mean, I know a lot of gamers will buy it, but I feel like most of the Wii's audience will ignore it.

I have no fond memories of the original, so I shall judge it purely on nostalgia-less merits.

Has anyone played the original lately? It did not age well. I sure hope that they at least fix all the glaring bugs from the first one. Like shooting someone in the hat, and them not reacting. Or how enemies can't see over gaps in the floor. This is a game that I played the ever lasting hell out of on the N64, but will likely never bother getting this version.

"Nintendo’s machine is underestimated in terms of its ability to deliver serious, credible, mature experiences"

Really? I think if anything the console has shown that the best way to create these experiences are threw innovation and art style; rather than the Brown and Grey seen on the other consoles. How are Okami, Fragle and even the Mario games not serious and mature experiences?
Of course "mature" is subjective, but I really hope they aren't using the phrase to mean shooting people...

"and because it feels so natural to bring GoldenEye home to Nintendo."

I call BS; it was a business decision made because the Wii has less competition when it comes to FPS games and a larger demographic than the other consoles. They are hoping that the Bond name will sell this to the masses, aided by nostalgia junkies.

I haven't played a "serious, credible, mature experience" on my Wii yet, and I have it since the day it launched. Many games are credible, but few are serious or mature. No More Heroes is a good example of the type of game one can make with the system, but it's not as if you couldn't do that game on another console.

I own a Wii so I can play all the Mario games and shit like Donkey Kong Country Returns. The main selling point for me with the Wii IS the nostalgia factor, that and the fact that I know I can rely on Nintendo to deliver a handful of amazing games over the course of the console's life.

I don't buy Nintendo systems for "mature, serious" games. I buy them to have fun.

With all that bullshit said, it would be nice to see Nintendo themselves make some more "adult" games. I'd really like to see what they could do with a violent action game or a shooter. Somehow I think it would possibly be one of the best in it's genre.

The PlayStation 3 is able to deliver serious, credible, mature experiences. Now with the much lauded Move controller. I can see it being one up on the Wii in giving a cutting edge shooter with motion controls, plus with 1080i HD graphics. Something the Wii lacks.

That too, but there's no specific reason for them to make a Golden eye re-make over a new experience for anything other than those reasons anyway.

As much as it pains me to say this the true reason is obvious.

Activision has a pretty hot looking game in Bloodstone on the way, and porting it to the Wii would be a disaster. I love gaming on my Wii but everyone knows you can't port a game from the PS3/360 to the Wii. It doesn't fly.

They want Bond to collect some money from Wii gamers though. So now we have the return of Goldeneye. Rabbid Bond fans might even talk themselves into buying both Bloodstone and Goldeneye.

Don't misunderstand me though. This Goldeneye update looks decent for a Wii game. As the owner if multiple consoles though I'm looking a little harder at Bloodstone.

They should team up with Atlus to make an M-rated RPG. They've collaborated with many other studios for RPGs, so this shouldn't be any different. They already have Strange Journey on the DS, so I can imagine that happening.

The reason its on wii is because when Rare left Nintendo, Nintendo retained the rights to the source code to Goldeneye 64. Nintendo paid for the license, Nintendo put up the funds to make the game.

Nintendo owns the Goldeneye 64 source code, Rare didn't get to keep it
Activision is using assets from a game Nintendo owns.
Activision currently has the rights to the James Bond license.

That's the reason Goldeneye is on the Wii.

Any other reason why its on the Wii is PR bullshit; any other argument why it should appear on another console is also bullshit. Why would something Nintendo owns appear on another console not made by Nintendo.

The Wii deserves it if the online doesn't end up being shit. Seriously, I can live with the non-HD graphics, as they are better give people credit for or the sometimes wonky controls, cuz when they work they work. But nothing can excuse how horrendous the online was for the ONE game on the Wii that needed online. Thats right Brawl-- it works with friends, but not with strangers. At all.

Well, unless Activision paid you to believe that the reason isn't a legal one, in which case I suppose Activision is making you say their PR.

But the point is you don't have to look like a blind sheep doing it.

It's licensing reasons. There's 3 well known issues with re-releasing Goldeneye:

1) It was published by Nintendo back in the day
2) The Bond license is now owned by Activision
3) Rare developed it and designed the levels

Having the game this way takes care of all 3 issues. There was no way it wasn't going to be on at least one Nintendo console (although I'm surprised it's only Nintendo), Activision are obviously publishing it, and have a re-make sorts the Rare issue

First of all, the Wii has already offered great mature gaming experiences with gaems like No More Heroes (look past the silly presentation and you'll find some clever and thought-provoking subject matter), Dead Space: Extraction and Silent Hill: Shattered Memories. Anyway, mature games are often immature if all you think about them is to contain violence, blood, cursing, and sexual themes. Gears of War, Ninja Gaiden, Grand Theft Auto, God of War (really think about how shallow the predictable the story is) and MadWorld would fall in line with that. Those are games that think they're mature but are really immature and shallow. With that said, there's nothing wrong with a immature game using mature themes as long as its not pretending to be something its not.

Quite frankly, no one has really given the Wii a chance to show off what it can do with an exclusive AAA FPS. In the past, Activision has only offered watered down ports of the Call of Duty games (Modern Warfare coming out 2 years later yet each COD porth as sold over a million copies so there's clearly gamers who are interested in wanting the FPS genre on the Wii). The only other developer to offer an exclusive FPS was High Voltage Software. Unfortunately, Conduit did not live up to expectations and turned out to be a mediocre exerience. The dev has the chance to redeem itself with the upcoming release of Conduit 2 and perhaps again with The Grinder (if it is still on track for release on the Wii some time next year).

Retro Studios was the first to really show off the intuitiveness and technical superiority of the Wii remote's IR pointer when compared to dual analog in an FPS-style game with Metroid Prime 3. That was really the reason that got me interested in wanting traditional FPS games on the platform. If Activision and Eurocom are being serious about putting in the effort into making a worthy reimaginging of Golden Eye 007, then it also needs to offer a decent marketing (unlike the shameful release of Modern Warfare Reflex which not only had zero marketing but was completely overshadowed by the launch of Modern Warfare 2) campaign to reflect that, then I don't see why it won't sell well on the Wii.

This is being made because in a choice between the same game on the HD consoles or with last gen tech, the majority of gamers will go for the HD version (even though the Wii remote makes a farce of dual analogues). Using the GoldenEye name makes an exclusive game a more viable commercial prospect, especially on a Nintendo console, hopefully allowing Activision to feel more confident in giving Eurocom a big enough budget to make this game as good as it can be. GoldenEye N64 is my favourite game of all time and I fully understand why they're using the name, even if the main inspiration seems to be Call of Duty. I don't think this'll be any more or less of a masterpiece than Blood Stone, but if there's one game worth taking inspiration from its the N64 original, so I'm looking forward to this. Although frankly, as The Conduit proved, even the most sub-standard game can be elevated by well-implemented pointer aiming, and Eurovision have their Dead Space Extraction (a fine game) experience to draw on in that respect.

I don't really see why they shouldn't pander. It's a bit cynical for sure, but traditional games don't have the record of selling big numbers on the Wii, so if the only cost of the console finally getting a good exclusive FPS is a much-loved name being recycled, then I'm not going to complain. If Activision are putting their resources behind this, it'll pretty much only be the second AAA third-party release the console has had, alongside Monster Hunter Tri (and possibly Epic Mickey to come).
