Here's the list of fixes in Dead Island's day-one patch! photo

As you might have already read in our Dead Island review, Techland's tropical zombie-slicer is a little on the broken side. It's got a wonderful heart, but it's riddled with problems and is in need of fixing. When the game launches tomorrow, Techland will start finishing the game with thirty-seven fixes in a day-one patch!

We received a list of those fixes with our review copy, and I thought I'd painstakingly copy them from the sheet so you know what gets resolved. It's quite amazing to see so much that went wrong, especially considering there's a lot more on top of it!

Despite these issues, I am still resolute in my assertion that you really ought to give the game a go. Yes, it's messy, and yes, it's unfinished. Yet it's still a tremendous amount of bemusing fun. Anyway, here's what's getting fixed on the first day ...

  • Fixed map synchronization when player joins during map load.
  • Fixed saving player re-spawn position when playing in co-op mode.
  • Fixed occasional inability to complete sidequests in Laboratory.
  • Improved enemy awareness (zombies).
  • Fixed occasional bug with NPC's hands bend (IK)
  • Fixed spawning enemies in some quests after joining co-op game.
  • Fixed showing locations on invisible NPCs.
  • Fixed potential path blocker when quest "Knockin' on heaven's door" was completed before talking to Dominik during the "On the air" quest.
  • Fixed displaying gather rings near some doors.
  • Fixed enemy reaction to fire.
  • Fixed enemies' health and stamina bars in co-op.
  • Fixed filtering of games in lobby.
  • Volume of pickup's engine has been increased.
  • Fixed a number of issues causing game instability.
  • Fixed the switching of maps upon player death.
  • Fixed enemies unable to reach the player on some arenas.
  • Thrown items cannot be picked up by co-op players for five minutes.
  • Items from freshly opened containers cannot be picked up by other players for five seconds to prevent theft.
  • Fixed animation glitch when trading with team members.
  • More than one player can use a ladder at the same time.
  • Fixed stomping execution animation when target's attacked by a second player.
  • Fixed the infinite respawning of shooting enemies.
  • Fixed not hiding menu if players die inside a vehicle.
  • Fixed item level calculation when playing New Game Plus.
  • Added information about players requesting pause in co-op.
  • Fixed A.I. animation glitch after fast-traveling or using a map portal.
  • Added distinction between quest checkpoints and other types of saves.
  • Fixed bug causing all inventory to disappear.
  • Fixed reloading and kicking. After the clip goes in, the reload is a success.
  • Purna can gain bonus rage from both "Grim Inspiration" and "Inspiring Kick".
  • Only "Walker" type enemies increase the extra XP of the "Combo" skill from Xian's Survival skill tree.
  • Health regeneration is disabled during grabs.
  • Focus on items in shops not changing after selling or buying.
  • More HP for NPCs in escort missions.
  • Butcher enemies won't spawn at all during escort missions (hooray!)
  • Fixed tracking after loading checkpoint.
  • Increased minimum vertical distance to count a waypoint as passed for NPCs (they no longer wander back-and-forth).

I saw the words "escort missions" and just lost most of my interest.

"Fixed occasional bug with NPC's hands bend"
What do they mean by this?

This seems an awful lot of bugs, I expected as much knowing the developer. However the words lots more on top, make me wonder a reviewer shouldn't be able to spot almost any bugs in a review copy. That's what testers are for.

I think I am going to cancel my preorder and order Space Marine to be on the save side.

I'm glad they acknowledge these faults and are actively fixing them. too many companies like to turn a blind eye to stuff like this.

Holy Monkey! I guess things can go a little sideways when you're trying to beat the falls heavy hitters to the shelves? Ah well. I'm still interested. Just not $59 interested. More like $29, or $39 tops.

After i learned the initial teaser trailer was not representative of anything in the actual game (narrative wise) I lost interest.

Need more games good at telling a story

Sounds to me like the game shouldn't have even gone gold yet. They probably wanted to get it out before the rush of Gears, CoD, Battlefield and so on hits to dominate online play.

The publisher more than likely as all publishers do, and put a deadline on the game. Because it's so close to release the developers didn't have time to get all the bugs they knew about seeing as debugging can be a tedious task.

Atleast the devs are still in the process of fixing the current bugs they know of and future ones that will arise.

I'm still interested. Can't wait til Friday, when it's out in Europe. Maybe there'll be a few more patches to fix more things.
I kid.

While I've been on the fence, I've decided to go ahead and grab this. Every review speaks highly of the fun and survival aspects. That's what I wanted, so Space Marine will have some company tomorrow, cause even if I wait for a price drop, it'll be negated by the dlc id have to pay for that's free with my preorder. Still will finish Deus before playing though. Also firing up Space Marine immediately, I need that action in my life. Demo gave me a rager.

It's ok kids! Techland has just proved it's ok if you don't spend time fixing your game before it's released but only if there are people excited for it!

Ehm, what story was in the teaser? It was atmospheric, but it was no good narrative in it.

Also, the game was announced long before that teaser and people who actually looked into the game prior to the teaser knew that what the game was like.

Why should I purchase this at $60 now when I can wait six months and get a more "polished" version for less than half the price?

New game plus is always a bonus. Thank god that there is tweaking being done to make escort missions better, although there is one tweak that has been overlooked: not having them. Oh well, still glad to see that they aren't ignoring all these problems and it makes me confident that there will be more fixes in the future if necessary.

I think I might wait for a small price drop, but where did you hear of a more "polished" version coming out? Or are you speaking strictly in terms of patches?

the only thing I've noticed an issue with was the side quests, I would finish something and it didn't give me credit. Other than that, I have really enjoyed playing this, have had the shit scared out of me a few times already, and super excited to load up a pickup truck and drive off a mountain with friends

Should have known the game was going to be a fucking mess, anything with Deep Silver on it is. Ah well, got it coming through Gamefly, wanted to check it out despite knowing it was going to be a buggy mess. Anyway, hope its as fun as Jim says it is.

All preloaded and ready to go. The people who are complaining about the game not being related enough to the infamous trailer are chumps. Been looking forward to this game ever since the first screenshots and videos from a few years back.

A couple of things about the review that you said were frustrating, but seemed to fit in with the realism.
Electrocuting/setting zombies on fire, and having them get close to you, hurts you. Nothing seems wrong with that. Also, zombies clutching you in their animations, opening up the opportunity for other zombies to attack. I don't see anything broken with that either. It's a fucking zombie apocalypse.
