Driving fast is neat. Blowing up stuff is neat. In Split/Second, Black Rock Studio is giving people the opportunity to do both these things at the same time -- if their drifting and passing abilities are good enough.

In the above, we’re introduced to the “powerplay,” the mechanic that separates this racer from most of the rest on the market. When used, a catastrophic environmental collapse of a component on a track occurs, allowing you to get back into first place and snicker at those caught in whatever happens. If used at the correct time, you can even alter the entire track, forcing new pathways to be used.

Eat that, Forza 3*.

*Eating mechanics, soot, and rubble is not advised or endorsed by Destructoid.com. Eating blueberry muffins and toast is endorsed though -- unless you have an allergy or something. If that's the case, forget about that endorsement and go live in a bubble.

Look intense and the car ripping in half after the "next time" message looks very like there could be some good crashes!

I'm not even a racing fan, but this looks incredibly badass.

Really hoping that this game delivers. I needs to be as good as it looks.

This game is amazing. I'm not a racing fan either, but this was one of my favorite games at E3 this year.

This game was a lot of fun at PAX. I'm definitely going to check it out.

this does look better than blur.
and i understand triggering can be random, but about how many times could you race the track before seeing all of the events?

at least the actual racing looks fun. unlike blur.

Anxiously anticipating this one. I still play pure just to look at it.

I had an amazing time playing this, and I hate all driving games. Looking forward to this one. =)

I love this game...every new piece I hear about it makes more more pumped. Now I just have to decide what console to get it on.

Indeed this looks like the racing game for people who normally don't like racers. I don't, and I could hardly put it down at PAX.

Kinda makes me think of Beetle Adventure Racing, with the alternate pathways and focus on breaking stuff. I'm kind of excited....

Looks like my type of racing game. More active control of the environment and some fun randomness each time.

This game does look awesome, but I just wonder how many total tracks there are, given the work that must go into making each one destructible.

Looks like Burnout, but more linear, and with (scripted) destructible environments. Having said that it does look like a very original mechanic that could be fun, especially making huge detours with the "power plays"
