Sure, the PS3 Slim just came out, but some people are always looking to the future. Take designer Tai Chiem for instance, who whipped up this concept design of what he imagines the PS4 could look like. As you can see, there are no wires, which is cool, but the thing that throws me is the place you insert the disc. It's not that it doesn't look handsome, but is it just me or do you imagine discs not existing anymore by the time PS4 rolls around? All digital, baby.
Chiem has also envisioned the Xbox 720, which looks a lot like an alien communication device from a faraway planet. If you recall, he also thought up the PSP2, which was bendable. Cool stuff. Have you ever imagined what the next generation of consoles might look like?

In regards to this mock up, I find it hard to believe Sony wouldn't accommodate the rising shooter market, especially when the inevitable Killzone 3 is probably in development.
You don't truly own the game, and you don't own all the rights.
I like having a disk, box, manual, and then I feel like I own the game.
Now if the game is just tetris or a mini game, I don't mind downloading it, but full games I would only buy and never download.
I am seriously not amused, enjoy Halo.
Change is for quitters.
um... discs are digital. don't worry Corinne, we still love you.
What about Nintendo hardware predictions? I'd like to see some people trying to catch on whatever they're planning. Anybody remember Nintendo ON or whatever?
Talking about new consoles, am I the only one that thinks that a single-handed controller with analog and digital movement on the front allied with ergonomical buttons on the back(much like the regular face buttons) would be a pretty neat solution to the whole motion sensing/button configuration paradox? You could even use two of them. Sort of like the Wii Remote and the Nunchuck, only less sucky.
Wireless PS4 Battle Armour?
I just hope it's packed with powerful graphics/physics/sound/central processing units. Oh, and more ram than they gave this gen.
Also, no digital distribution, please.
But seriously, if it's anything Sony should have learned by now, is to not over-complicate their console, I think (and hope) Sony makes some wiser choices next generation.
But this is 2030 shit.
They are see through though!
Also, he missed off the shoulder buttons.
Excellent observational skills, guys.
What needs to be redesigned?
It's been the most popular controller style for a while now (ever since PS1/2), so what is there to improve on it besides the back triggers which cause your fingers to slip off?
Redesigning for the sake of redesigning doesn't make sense in the face of an already great product. Just look at the outcry from the original "boomerang controller" mock up.
@Magnalon,
Why does having the analog sticks at two different positions make a controller better for FPSs? I've heard this same thing from a few people before but don't quite understand it.
I'm honestly just curious as to the motivation behind it.
Same-level sticks? Dunno what that means, care to explain?
I just imagine next-gen consoles will be rather rectangular and boxy, like they've usually been.
Because... it's the future! Thank you for stopping by.
By that, I mean the dual analog sticks are on the same level plane, side by side.
@Dinnertime
One of the arugments for the 360 controller in terms of FPS games is flexibility. The PS3's dual analog sticks are so close together, it's hard to accurately aim while using utility buttons. They also cramp your hands after extended dual use, which is imperative for shooters. The analog sticks themselves also, I feel, aren't as tight as the 360s (this is just my personal view after comparing the same games side by side), and tend to "slip" more than an ergo-dynamic split design that the 360 touts.
Also, I feel like the triggers on the PS3 are less accurate (I've been told to get the "Real Trigger" peripheral), but now I'm just getting off the analog argument. Long story short, as someone who plays shooters on every system, I feel like I've had the most accurate experiences with the PC>360> and PS3, respectively.
For games like Killzone 2 or the Resistance series, which are PS3 exclusive, I don't really have a problem using the dual stick placement because that's all you get: the Dualshock 3. But if I have a choice, I'll choose the 360 for shooters, just like I'd choose the PS3 for fighting games and classic 2D titles like Mega Man 9.
@ Magnalon
You should REALLY try those 'Real Triggers'. I bought a set off Amazon for like 3 bucks(then bought sets for all my other Dualshocks), they are totally great!
And I hope Sony keeps discs around for the PS4.
