Does Global Thermonuclear War ring any bells? It was one of the hidden multiplayer modes in Modern Warfare 2 that Josh told us about just the other day. Having opened up the developer console, which, by default is blocked, players were able to gain access to otherwise unplayable modes.
GTW was one such mode, tasking players with "capturing" a nuke for 90 seconds to detonate it. Now, thanks to the persistent bunch at ModernWarfail2, everyone has the opportunity to witness the mayhem.
Since it's only a single guy showing this off, the build up is really tedious. But I'd be willing to bet a full match would be tense, frustrating, and most importantly fun. Whether or not this mode will A) get the paid DLC treatment, B) one day get unlocked for free, or C) never be officially released remains to be seen.
As a quick aside, the "getting a virus by way of IWNet" was a false alarm. No need to panic, for once.
Jordan Devore is Destructoid's PC gaming manager and founding ginger editor. He is said to be easy to love but difficult to know. When Samit inquired about his curious bio photo Jordan simply replied: "bitches love sandcastles" ... yet, there is no sandcastle in that photo. We may never truly understand his ways.

If I had been stupid and purchased MW2, I'd be kicking myself even harder now. You KNOW that they're going to charge to release this. I can guarantee this locked content is sitting on the console versions, too. They're going to charge players for patches that unlock the content that they already paid for and own. That is the biggest of all dick moves. Of course, everyone who bought it deserves to have their money taken for not seeing what Modern Warfare 2 truly was.
It's not really a mode I'm interested in, so I won't miss it if I don't buy it. If it unlocks with the maps next year, then fine, it's a little bonus. Either way, I've seen the nuke already and the novelty has worn off now.
Looks fake to me - the entry game title, "Capture the nuke" wasn't capitalized like the others. This is a PC modified game setting, not a hidden multiplayer game mode.
There's no mod tools for the game so there's no way to mod it. This game mode is simply hidden content. People broke open the dev console and found these hidden game modes that cannot be activated other than through the dev console. So, yes, it is a hidden MP game mode. One that a lot of people suspect will be the subject of unlocked paid DLC eventually, knowing how Activision likes to charge people for everything, even if they have the content in the first place.
Really? Didn't the gaming population erupt in a fury of hellfire literally years ago when it came out that content was already on disc but the developers were calling it DLC and essentially charging players for the benefit of "unlocking" it? And this is actually happening?
I'm going to hope, HOPE AGAINST ALL HOPE, that this is just a mode that they ended up deciding against and didn't end up removing fully from the game. If this does end up being charged DLC, I think players have a responsibility to hack it and make it accessible to other players. Yes, I went there.
Has anyone ever seen a nuke in a live match? It's a sight(sound?) to behold, lemme tell ya. My roomate is a beast at MW2 and he was like; "Here, wanna launch it?" and I was like "Hey newbs, I'm ending the game now!(on the XBox mic)" and launched it. The sounds that came over the headset? Priceless. I wish I coulda recorded it.
On-topic: To all the fags saying "wah wah I'm not gonna" STFU and just buy it like you did with MW2 after saying you weren't going to buy it. I will buy this shit cause it's the hot shit. That and most likely my friends will too. -_-
To anyone complaining about it being on the disc...
Who cares? I mean, sure, it does suck to withhold content if it is done and especially on the disc, yes. But I personally don't mind as I feel I got my $60 worth already. Sure the single player is short, but I know I will play through it at least 2 more times. Plus I haven't even touched the spec-ops yet. Most importantly, I already logged on about a day and a half TOTAL hours of multiplayer. And I am sure I will triple that before wanting new content.
So if you want to break it down in the classic "time:money" ratio, I figure I am paying about $1.15 per hour so far. And that number will drop significantly in the coming months. Not to mention I got $20 gift card from amazon with it (that I am guaranteed to spend) so in reality I paid $40, dropping the price even further.
Bottom line is, I got my money's worth and then some. Especially compared to a LOT of other games out there at the same price point.
I will gladly support the game's future DLC even if it is on the disc. It just hopefully means less download time when the time comes.
No, that's not a mod. Those are the results of the host tweaking settings in the dev console. They did not mod any of that in. Those were all present items in the game's original content to which they changed the values. Nothing original was brought in. Everything that you've seen about the game so far, including these game modes SHIPPED ON THE DISC.
@Mateitna - Maybe you should read the discription for the vid you posted. It reads:
"Thanks to AgentGOD and his great work bringing the developer console back into the PC version, a whole new wave of servers are possible with vast amounts of customisation. Things such as unlimited ammo, massive experience points (10000xp for a single kill), Field of View tweaks, speed and gravity adjustments and so much more! The best bit is, this is all ranked and on IWNet! I guess the game is no longer balanced to fuck the PC gamers over!"
Notice its all customization from the dev kit. There is no modding going on in the sense that they had to introduce something original into the game to make it do what they did. Its all via a kit that the developers had. If, for instance, they were to add in new weapons, grenades, maps, attachments, or something else that would require outside development and then placed into game it would then be considered a mod.
This is a spoiler the worst spoiler out there, you know they are going to update the playlist at random times, and probably saving these modes to make a holiday impact. I seriously didn't appreciate this knowledge and would have been far better off being surprised when they let us play it. If it's DLC I'll be pissed since it's already part of the game.
I get the feeling this was just cut because the game type would suck. This would be nothing but people chucking grenades into the nuke area. Nobody would ever capture it.
Quite honestly, it doesn't look that fun. If they never release this game type, or release it for free later then that's fine -- if they dare charge for it though that would just further prove how fucking stupid IW/Activision is.
Not going to pay for that. If they start to charge money for multiplayer modes, or for multiplayer itself, I will not buy it. Others are welcome to, if they feel it is worth their money. I however, will not. Sorry. Not that IW or Activision care about one little person not buying their DLC.
Ah well, so it goes. That's capitalism for you. They'll see how much they can push this, and I wouldn't be surprised if they pushed it to the brink (you know, pay for play, pay for unlockable weapons, skins, modes, levels, ect). Activision is a company. Companies are greedy. If you don't think its worth your money (and I for one, do not think it is worth my money), just don't buy it.
I think that mode would end up being a battle over points alone as hardly ever would anyone be able to stay with the nuke that long. It may just be a remnant of a previous build or it may be future DLC, but I'm not going to get my panties in a bunch over it either way. As for PC gamers, welcome to IWNet hell. Console gamers have been dealing with the head-scratch-inducing match system since COD4, and yes it does suck. The game is great though, and I'm glad I bought it.
Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
Strange game. The only winning move is not to play.

Looks similar to Domination, except only one point that needs controlled. Whoever gets to 100 first wins the boom...and apparently dies anyway.

Simple really.
Just.
Don't.
Buy.
