Hello, world: Peter Moore says EA is going global photo

EA’s CEO, John Riccitiello, has come to be known for a mix of confidence and humility that has even endeared him to some of the most cynical gamers out there. Peter Moore, the President of EA Sports, seems to be taking cues from Mr. Riccitiello, except he throws in his trademark charisma as well. In a recent interview with MCV, he discussed a variety of topics, including competition with Activision Blizzard, gamers’ hatred for his employer, casual gaming, and his decision to sign on with EA. But the Q&A focused on EA’s redoubled efforts to solidify their presence abroad:

In which areas do you feel EA Sports’ portfolio is maybe lacking?

I feel great about our current line-up of franchises, but we’re also doing a number of things to diversify and expand our business. We need to globalise, and we’re taking many steps to broaden the reach and appeal of our product portfolio. FIFA obviously has global appeal, but this is about more than just selling additional copies of FIFA — this is about truly delivering a global product portfolio.

From a business standpoint, this makes a lot of sense. While EA Sports’ titles may be million-sellers in the States, a game like Madden NFL 08 doesn’t move that many units in Europe. Apparently, they define “football” as a game you play with your feet. How peculiar...

Anyway, here’s a question for our readers around the world: what kinds of sports games would you like to see from EA? Does a current-gen (that is, PS3/360) version of Rugby 08 sound appealing? Or would something like ICC Cricket 09 be more your cup of tea? Hit the comments and voice your opinions!

Also, I love Moore’s answer to the last question, don’t you? As far as I’m concerned, he’s absolutely right — now that Activision has milked the Tony Hawk series dry, anyway...

Honestly, just give us something different. Be it cricket, foooootball (more properly known as soccer in the REAL world :p), rugby, skiing, hell, i'd settle for a curling game at this point.

However much I loathe EA for stripping me of the $19.99 NFL 2K franchise by taking the NFL license, I would love to see them make another Rugby game and just go insane with development of random sports. I still dislike EA but this may be a to get on many gamers good side. Fencing, water polo, regular polo, lacrosse, cricket. Oh the possibilities.

And screw Ultimate Frisbee, its a retarded non-sport. Ultimate frisbee is Discs of Tron.

Good call on football being a sport you play with your feet.

'Friday night footy' does sound better (and less suggestive) than 'friday night handy', is this the reason for the the misnomer??

I don't think I'd be inviting my friends around for some friday night handy anyway.

I think it's time EA spotlighted some less traditional sports. Underwater hockey might be a good place to start.

Well, the first thing that comes to my mind is that they should hire more international developers to make titles that are popular in territories other than just the US. Like, why doesn't EA have any Japanese developers making RPGs?

NHL, FIFA and Skate are just fine with me. Pretty sure North America isn't going to take too kindly to anything new in the way of sports.

lulz programming joke.

I swear there was a pretty decent frisbee arcade game, anyone remember the name of that?
Slamball might make an interesting video game, but it's still just a variant of basketball. It's pretty hard to think of a new sports game as they have the main bases covered, you could move into more obscure sports like fencing, that's the only thing i can think of that would be remotely interesting, that and Curling in HD!

If anything they should rename (american)football American Rugby. But then I guess even that was called Rugby Football back in the day. You could call it Camp Football after Walter Camp haha.

Wether it`s from EA or 2K, I don`t care, but even us Europeans would love to see a decent baseball game every once in a while. The currrent gen Versions are all region locked, the last baseball game I was able to pick up over here was Major league Baseball 2000 for the PS 1...

And I think I would even give Crickett or Rugby a try. As long as they manage to include some tutorials that explain the fundamentals of the game. I mysellf happen to know how NFL Football works (the rules and everything), but if you don`t have any clue about it and pick up Madden you are basically screwed with all the options and controlls.

I think any sports game can do decent in any country in the world if the game has a good presentation and doesn`t appeal to hardcore fans only.

@Wodkaredbubu: PS3 games aren’t region-locked, so if you can scrounge up the dough for one of those, you can import whatever you want.

What I think would sell like crazy is something that worked as easy as Mario Paint, a game where you could create your own models by sculpting an shapes in 3d space with a controller, like littlebigplanet except with less dolls.

Well I've got a cricket game on my xbox360, made by Codemasters...

and I can clearly state that Cricket is not worth it to be made into a game... its just too fucking slow... the first tutorial takes allready close to an hour to complete and there's 8 of them, and the matches are even slower :p

I'd love to see and EA-F1-game though, then at least we'll be able to play it on more then just the PS3 :p
