Hellgate: London to be a subscription based MMO photo

Remember how you were excited to play Hellgate: London, a game that many were calling the spiritual successor to Diablo? Well, how's this for a kick in a nuts? In a recent conversation with Shacknews, developer Flagship Studios revealed that the games online component will be a subscription based MMO.

From the Shacknews report:

Drawing similarities to ArenaNet's Guild Wars, the Hellgate MMO is heavily instanced. Group and solo PvE is the game's main focus; PvP will exist in a small scale form, but is not a major element of the initial launch. It will also feature a Hardcore mode similar to that found in Blizzard's Diablo II, a game on which many members of the Hellgate team worked. Hellgate's MMO will contain all of the missions and story from the single-player aspect of the game, as well as exclusive gameplay modes and content. Like the single-player game, the MMO will be comprised of dynamically generated areas and items. Further content will be continually added over time by a dedicated Flagship team.

So it's going to be like Guild Wars expect while that game has a free monthly experience, you're going to have to pony up dough monthly to participate online? Yeah, that sounds like a great idea, guys. Hey Flagship -- why don't you just come right over to my house tomorrow morning and crap in my box of Cocoa Puffs before I wake up?

While the single player game will remain intact, the multiplayer portion of the game was a main draw for a lot of gamers; particularly those with frightening Diablo addictions.

Flagship fucking fails. This is the worst thing i have heard forever. Next to Crysis this is the game that has made me want to get a new PC. I have been watching this game for 2 years and was really looking forward to the free online play. Multiplayer was the reason i wanted this game but I will NOT pay $15/month for it.

When he stated that, did he put his mouth over his hand and muffled out the side? That's just the most retarded way to whore out cash from consumers, though I'm glad they pointed this out here and now, and not on the side of the box when I'm in line paying for it.

Great idea there, Flagship. Make the game a gimped MMORPG like Guild Wars but not free. Awesome.

Nothing against Guild Wars, though. Great game with a heavy emphasis on strategy. And it's FREE.

This is like... making a soda that tastes shitty like diet coke, but still keeping all the calories intact. What the hell does the player get out of this?

Jesus.

That's it. No longer buying this game.

When I finally quit WoW after 2 years, I realized how bullshit the MMO setup is. It pulls you in so badly and requires so much committment that it can suck up almost all of your freetime and prevent you from enjoying other games that are available. WoW:BC will be officially the first Blizzard product that I will not purchase since the original Warcraft.

And now I hear that this game, which promised to be the true spirtual successor of Diablo II, is instead going to be yet another bullshit MMO.

Fuck!

They aren't going to sell shit if they are going to charge monthly. They had me sold a year ago and I was totally read for it, but not anymore. I just need to keep ranting about this. This is just about the Worst thing Flagship could have done.

You know, when you actually read it, it sounds more like they're considering the OPTION to make it pay to play. It's entirely possible that they may skip it (a tad unlikely, though), or have two tiers of online play. straight co-op or full on MMO. They mentioned a free trial to the online features, so you never really know.

Bitch all you want about MMORPGs, but they take a hell of a lot more work than most other games. World of Warcraft releases major updates around once a month or so, and those servers are expensive to run. Considering all the effort it takes just to run a full MMORPG (Guild Wars doesn't really count...), including GMs and constant teams of programmers, it's not surprising why they keep charging you.

As these games grow so does the cost.

Keeping an active team of GM's, constant updates, and just keeping a strong server going cost alot of money. The only way to get around this is to have private servers.

This is going to be the norm for any large scale online game.

But still. $15 x 6 million members for WoW, They light their cuban cigars with $1000 bills.
Zoex's Avatar - Comment posted on 01/10/2007 01:04

And, as of now, we know nothing on pricing. We could hope for like $20 a year or somthing. That would be worth it (and fair in my opinion, free games just become money holes later).

That's the thing, they don't have to make it an MMO. Diablo didn't have continually added content (with the exception of a single expansion pack) and so they didn't have to keep charging people. Yet it was stil ridiculously addicting and lasted people a long time.

ZealousD, they mentioned that there will be a free trial mode for it. The free trial could mean simple co-op with friends over the internet, kinda like Diablo 2 instead of a full on MMORPG. I still think it looks interesting. Hell, if World of Warcraft had a single player option like this game does, it would be kick ass. No fees required for single player and no grief players.

Ballistic, you say that MMOs are expensive to keep up with patches and bandwidth and what not, but i assure with 100% certainty that Blizzard charges WAY more than they need to break even. they made 150% profit in the first MONTH that WoW came out. And that is pure profite. A successful game is usually about 50% profit after 6 months.

blizzard overcharges the shit out of WoW, and any game that costs me $15/month to play, i will not play it.
