In case anybody was wondering, Flagship Studios hasn't let up on those swift kicks in the balls. We've known for a while that there were going to be two tiers in Hellgate: London, depending on whether or not players paid the monthly subscription. Well, it seems that Games for Windows magazine has the scoop: the montly fee will be a comparatively meager $9.95, and those who buckle down will be given the sexy moniker of "Elite." Want to know what the Haves get that the Have Nots don't? Look no further:

  • Both levels have their characters held on secure servers
  • Elite players get bumped to the front of the line for servers
  • Elite players get 12 characters, regular players get 3
  • Elite players can hold 40 items in lockers around the city, regular players get 20 and can't move them to other players
  • Elite players have access to better shinier gear (the only difference is aesthetic
  • Elite players have access to shuttles to move easier around the city
  • Elite players can own property, regular gamers can't own a house or enter houses
  • Elite players get more game types
  • Elite players get monthly content additions
  • So, the question remains: are you getting screwed? Well, that depends on how you look at it. If you see the regular game as a gimped version of the Elite, then I guess so; however, if you see the Elite version as the normal version with tons of extra content (as the naming scheme would imply), then it seems like a good price for some excellent extras.

Hit the jump for my thoughts.

    [Via Opposable Thumbs, thanks Jason!!]

Of course, we'd all like extra content for free, but it just doesn't work that way anymore. Personally, I think this is a great idea. It's a pretty shrewd way to get people playing Hellgate: London and populating the servers. Also, it allows players to give the game a test run for free -- if it's not your thing, then you still get a (hopefully) satisfying single-player campaign and some online capabilites, with the option to upgrade whenever you want. Conversely, if you decide that 10 bucks is just too much, you can downgrade without giving too much up. At $5 cheaper than World of Warcraft, I wouldn't write Hellgate: London off just yet.

But what do you guys think? Good marketing or a slap in the face? Is anybody looking forward to this when it drops this summer?

This game is the top one on my list. They promised some regular new content (monsters, levels, items, locations) and some trimestrial big update. I think its worth the 10$. I don't care for the other features but if they manage to hook me on the quality of the new content, I'll be a long-term paying player.

I think its a pretty grand scheme to sqeeze more dollars out of the fine people who might play the game. Though the game had better be pretty awesome otherwise they're likely gonna see some dropoff as people get tired of paying the MONTLY fee. But lets face it: $10 these days really isn't that much. Hell I bet you could win that much from your friends in MONTLY poker games.

I'm still looking forward to it, but definitely not as much as I was before, when I thought it was going to be like Diablo II but 3d and more awesome.

I will still buy it, play it, and I'm quite sure that I will enjoy it. I think it'll be big at LAN parties and things like that. I don't think I'll ever shell out $10/mo for a 'scrip, however. I just can't wrap my head around the idea of continuously paying for a game that I have already purchased.

Mind you, I might go slumming for a month or two, just to see what it's like, but I won't do that for very long.

I was really excited for this game . . . until I played it :( The stuff they showed at CES was pretty damn dull.

Yeah, it's gimped, but not SO gimped. If the core gameplay is fun I see no need to pay for the admittedly crappy extra content. I don't think there will be a big rush to the servers anyway. Either way, DON'T CARE LOL!

As long as the pay content doesn't give players a competitive advantage over each other, I'm fine with having it as an option. I probably wouldn't pay for it myself though.

Yeah Fronz, I kinda expected that, hence the problem with the FPS mash-up.

It's tough enough to make a good FPS. My unofficial estimate says only one out of every thirty released is worth remembering. Trying to throw leveling up and RPG shit in it, well its not gonna work.

Unless it was FPS Pokemon. Bullets are super effective!

If Diabo II had a 9.95/month option, I would be eight hundred thirty five bucks in the hole right now, plus the cost of the game and expansion. Plus, I've actually bought the game and expansion about 7 times. On the other hand, that still wouldn't have been that bad a deal because it would have averaged out to about .000003 cents an hour.

$10 a month for a FPS w/ expanded online? Uh, no thanks, I'd rather not have my cornhole brutalized.

As long as it has dedicated servers, all that's ok with me.

Could be worse. Not letting regular users use shuttles sounds pretty cheap, but I can live with the rest of the differences. I'm really hoping this game lives up to diablo's heritage. But worst case, I can just keep playing diablo 2.

You can't imagine how excited I am for this game. Has there been any update on the release date? Last I heard was "summer". If this can give me 1/5th of the enjoyment Diablo 2 gave me, I will be a very happy gamer.
