Heavy Rain dev doesn't want you to have a do-over photo

As we have already discussed, Quantic Dreams' curious PS3 exclusive Heavy Rain features a system where you can continue the game's story, even if your starting character ends up meeting an untimely death. This is something that Quantic Dreams boss man David Cage would like you to make full use of.

Although Heavy Rain will offer an ability to replay parts of the game and change their actions, Cage would rather you didn't -- he would prefer you to try out Heavy Rain in one go, and deal with the consequences as and when they arrive.

"Yes, there will be the opportunity for players to replay as much as they want from where they want, but we would really like to encourage them not to do so - to continue to play with one story bearing with the consequences of their actions.

This is what's exciting about it. This is a story that you told. It's pretty unique. So why would you want to do everything perfect and change what you've done. You will be able to redo what you like but we recommend not to."
Basically, if you decide to have a do-over for dying or making a mistake, you're going to bitterly disappoint David Cage. Do you really want to do that? It took him long enough to follow up Indigo Prophecy, the last thing I want is for him to spend years after Heavy Rain doing nothing because you depressed him, you f*cking little wanker.

David Cage needs to stop depressing me with this long ass wait for this game. I'll fucking play the game anyway he wants me to. While hoola hooping or naked, just release this already.

I really like that, give the players the choice. Kind of like Bioshock's vita chambers. You could use them... or don't and have a better game for it.

The man has a point too. If you don't use "do-overs" or "retries" in a game driven by the story, it could really add a certain weight your actions that makes them meaningful. I love quality story telling. This game intrigues me more and more.

I bet that using the replay feature will play into some "time paradox" shit story wise. Like, maybe the more you use it, the more impossible happenings start happening and such. It'd be cool if stuff like that happened.

It sounds like an interesting concept; from what I've heard, if a player character dies, it does not necessarily spell Game Over... the story would instead continue from the perspective of someone else, the previous protagonist's death having an effect on the rest of the plot.

If this isn't a Peter Molyneux, then fuck yes. If it is, then =/

3 Things:

1) What if you are really bad and keep dying, can you kill the entire human race from each person's point of view? In other words, how many times can you die before the game runs out of "backup"
2) If they want to encourage people not to use the retry feature, they should have a trophy (achievement) that rewaqrds you for not using it.
3) I cannot wait for this game

It's always a bad sign when a developer wants to dictate to you the way to play his game instead of leaving that part up to you.

It's usually a sign of some really bad gameplay design decisions.

See Denis Dyack.

There is no dictation on how to play it, he is just saying it is most enjoyable to continue on to see the consequences you have wrought. That's pretty much how Indigo Prophecy was best enjoyed IMO, so I can see it being similar here. On a side note how did I not notice until just now that this game is PS3 exclusive. If this lives up to Indigo I will actually have to finally be purchasing a PS3....damnit!

@Lime:
That's pretty much exactly how one of his earlier games, Omicron: The Nomad Soul, worked.

I thought Indigo Prophecy was a really neat game brought down by a terrible last third and annoying Simon QTEs. Hopefully Heavy Rain builds on Indigo Prophecy's solid foundation and fixes the problems.

It doesn't sound like he's trying to dictate the way the game is played, but stressing the way he's trying to turn some game conventions on their head. Sounds interesting, and like some others mentioned, I want to see how much you can screw up before you get some sort of bad "you didn't make it to the end" ending.

Considering how most David Cage projects turn out, having a "do over" of the first half of the game is going to be the only way to play it.

Because you know that at about the half way point that girl is going to pull the trigger on that gun and shoot a bullet made of internet code into the stratosphere and cause butterflies to turn into demonic and open portals to alternate dimensions of hell or some dumb shit.

What the fuck Cage?
