The same guys that find an appreciation of the drugged out citizens of Shenmue, and the dubtastic narrative of Deadly Premonition are going to deny the similarly jarring vacantness and lulzy-ness of Heavy Rain's children?
Come on now, yall.
Come on. :)
And I'd bet the ranch that developers across the globe agree with "using the best techniques for games and not film" to compete and advance the genre. David being just a highly vocal minority. Also, smacktard. Also, je ne sais quoi. Mais, c'est mal.
It's okay that you didn't like the game and, yeah, Cage is a pompous ass, but what he's doing is a good thing for gaming whether you like it or not. Heavy Rain was as much of a game as any other I've played. It put me in control with a set of rules for playing. And within those rules I was given choices on what the characters did.
As bad as the writing and the acting could be at times, it was equally gripping and amazing a multitude of other times. While you might scoff at the red balloon it seems as if you completely forget that THAT is when Ethan loses his son in the crowd. Yeah, his son is utterly stupid, but it makes sense that for Ethan that a red balloon stands in the place of his failure and not being able to catch it is the manafestation of his son dying.
Great symbolism? Perhaps not. Horrible? Hardly and it just seems like you want to harp on something for the sake of it. For someone that loves games, the fact that you can't just let yourself sink into the game is somewhat hilarious to me. I'm not telling you it is a masterpiece but it is my personal GotY along with Nier.
Also, don't you even dare even suggest that the vast majority of us who bought Heavy Rain are some cult followers. I like what Cage is doing, but I'll be the first to admit that the man has his head up his ass in a number of ways. Fahrenheit was a mess and he didn't learn his lesson either with Heavy Rain - worse he took out the bizarre and didn't bother to fill the gap.
I really hope that there are more games that follow what Heavy Rain put forth. Better games, obviously, but more of them nonetheless.
@Arsenic13 whuts wrong with that?
The game had a few great moments, I'll give it that. The "saw"-esque part was both horrifying and sad, and I can think of a few other key instances, but overall the entire thing felt like a mess.
My advice: if the game had contained a half-way decent story, maybe I would have forgiven its flaws. Next time, hire an actual writer to pen the script, and then it'll be tons better. I don't mind the format they used, but considering so much of the game weighed heavily on the narrative impact of the script...well, it did not deliver in the slightest. Take that away, and you have a shell of an awful game.
And yeah, I like how Miyamoto is so completely humble, while this guy is a pompous ass. Puts things into perspective, really.
Also- "Still very dark, still for adults" is this dude 16 years old or is he just stunted emotionally?
Quantic dreams games are simply adventure games with immersive controls, moderate acting and crappy stories. Nothing revolutionary, but they can be fun. Due to cage acting like a whiny baby I decided to skip heavy rain and watch it on youtube.
Johnathan, were you on your period when you wrote this?
"Basically, they don't care about games. They care about their agenda" I was one of those people who actually really dug Heavy Rain, and I didn't "get suck" having to play it. Yes it has flaws, yes some people aren't going to like it, and that's perfectly fine; nothing's perfect.
"I think it goes without saying that I think the less of these people there are making games, writing about games, and playing games, the better for gaming as a medium." Get off your high horse. Should I be sorry because my taste didn't match your's?? Should I apologize because I liked something you didn't?? I'm not "overzealous" about Heavy Rain or one of its "cultish" followers, but I enjoyed it.
I do hear you in that what I think you're trying to say, though, which is something along the lines of "arrogant snobs who think they're superior to every one else because of their stance on one particular thing need to shut the fuck up". And I agree, wholeheartedly. So shut the fuck up.
That's actually a rip-off of a scene from a Fritz Lang film called M, which was about a child killer in Germany. That's not art. That's just being intellectually lazy.
I feel pokota already hit the nail on the head, but to reiterate, this article is heavy on the inflammatory and light on the informative. Hell, even if you labeled this as a specific "editorial" it doesn't stop in its attempt to get the writer's opinion across (you don't like Heavy Rain, we get it). No, it seemingly goes out of its way to insult the reader who happens to enjoy Heavy Rain. The game is by no means a masterpiece, and David Cage is by no means my role model, but I liked the game for what it was, and for what it was it was a current generation offering of a particular style of game that we either haven't seen for awhile or at least haven't seen done in such a modernized format, in such an interesting way. Yeah some people think brushing your teeth in a game is stupid, the voice acting was atrocious and the plot had a bevy of holes...these arguments were made, and validly so, when the game came out. A post with such a pessimistic, condescending tone such as this for no other reason than what appears to be the writer's own grudge against all things heavy, rain, and David Cage, over a year after the game's release, is a tad bit unnecessary. Oh, and I opened with the first line of the article for a reason...you didn't finish the game (you weren't a fan, I got the impression) yet felt the need to spend however long it took to write this and boo hoo about it? It's like the Chef's guide to how to make a good pizza, written by the guy who fucking hates pizza. Stick to Pokemon, or whatever you like, before pursuing in-depth criticism of things you don't like, and frankly haven't fully experienced.
Heavy Rain is far from perfect, but just because David Cage makes comments that seem excessive doesn't mean you have to make people feel like assholes for having a good time with a product. When you read your own writing, do you actually feel more justified and accomplished than a person like David Cage? At least the guy is just taking pride in something he helped make, regardless if others agree with him. All you're doing is hating on something that isn't yours, which is less productive than what I'd like to read from a gaming website. Oh well, hopefully the next Wiiware release will garner less bitter and arbitary hellfire.
Plot has a purpose in video games. It gives the player something to do and adds a level of immersion, which is necessary to keep most players from getting bored with the game straight off the bat. A game plot can never be on par with a movie or do something new that a movie hasn't already done in some way shape or form.
As for movies translating into games, it's pretty obvious that the end result is going to be terrible; Heavy Rain is a terrible video game. There are some experiences you cannot translate into video game form, at least not at this point in time.
On that note, I agree. David Cage falls into a counter-culture among video game developers, and that kind of logic only gives way to even more saturation with crappy FPS games like Homefront, which have an emphasis on graphics and atmosphere over quality gameplay.
you only made another interactive movie that have been on consoles/PCs for nearly 20years now. your game and its cult made me embarassed to be a gamer thanks to people calling Heavy Rain "best game EVAH" with plot and characters subpar even compared to all shooter-fests we can get this days.
Dont get me wrong, i think its important for games to be as, if not more, accepted as movies, and i think we are getting there, but hearing idiots like David Cage saying nonsensical crap like this is just annoying
I actually really enjoyed Heavy Rain, but that's only because I didn't notice any of the plot-holes until after reading Gameradar's article about it.
To be fair, you're one of my favorites because you embrace old games, and I'll always believe gameplay was at it's best in the old days. However, your rant on Heavy Rain is childish and annoying. The game, for what it is, is fantastic and gripping. You clearly scoffed the whole time while playing it before giving it a chance. Mad about the balloon flying off? Really. Jesus Christ.
Maybe you talked to Jim too much before playing... Or maybe you're posting as a drunk asshole since it is St. Pattys night. Meh.
