Heavy competition for Holiday '09 has titles moving to 2010 photo

Ubisoft's Michael de Plater was the creative director of EndWar, and he sees a different kind of war coming this Christmas/Holiday season -- the war for your gift money. Because of this upcoming battle, de Plater sees games moving to a 2010 release instead, to make sure they do not get lost in the holiday shuffle.

"It's a bit tough to launch a new IP exactly at Christmas when you're head-to-head with blockbuster sequels," said de Plater. "It's interesting to see a number of big titles, like Heavy Rain, being targeted at 2010 to avoid the Christmas rush.

"And Ubisoft's got Ruse coming out in 2010. Even God of War 3's in 2010, that's how brutal it is. I mean, you've got Assassin's Creed 2, Modern Warfare 2, Mass Effect 2..."

Hell, 2010 is going to be a sequel year. He forgot BioShock 2. And Final Fantasy XIII. Really, you should be asking for money and gift cards for Christmas instead of games.

Big fucking surprise. Try releasing something good over the summer when kids (and college kids) are not in school and actually have the time to play some games. This whole "We have to put out a game over Xmas in order for it to sell" thing the industry has going on is really fucking annoying.

Now early 2010 is just as crowded as late 2009 was.

@ Black Nexus.
Exactly! I don't get how anyone thinks they are going to lock down more market share this way. We need to stretch the field a little further and get game releases through the middle of the year when people have cash to afford them, and folks are fiending for fresh titles to play.

We have summer blockbuster movies, why not blockbuster games as well?

The game developers either want time for the recession to end Stateside. OR Maybe got caught with their pants down & want to make excuses because of Call of Duty MW2. "POLISHING"

Either way Black Nexus wins this thread!

God of War III releasing in Q1 says NOTHING about the holiday lineup. Every God of War game has released in that time frame. Maybe you could argue that they started this trend of big budget releases in February and March, but it's downright ignorant to use it as an example of titles moving to get out of the way.

No one here has the cash to buy all the must have games, for any genre, hitting retail by the end of 2009.

I posted it yesterday on some other article, but check out Gamesradar's new "still coming in 2009" post: there's a shit ton there.

Just to mess with everyone, somebody should announce the MW2 is being delayed into 2010 too.

I'll get MW2, Assassin's Creed 2, and Brutal Legend.

Oh, and early GOTY lock, Williams Pinball Collection on 360. Can't wait for that one.

I thought Bioshock 2 was also delayed.

No, don't push them to early 2010; push them to late 2012. Heck, push them to mid 2016, we can handle it.
Try us.

Right, guys?

Not all that surprising, I was a little mad at some of these delays but with a lot of good games still due out this year I'm ok with waiting. I'm sure my wallet will be happier as well.

Don't forget Splinter Cell: Conviction also! That got pushed to early 2010 as well. It's honestly the one game I'm looking forward to most and it's not out for my birthday OR Christmas. WTF!

It's nice that some of these big sequels are moving out of the way so that perhaps some new IPs will have a fighting chance this fall (Brutal Legend, Borderlands, Dragon Age, Demons Souls -- I'm still going to be plenty busy!).

I know some of these games were pushed to 2010 because the publishers didn't want to compete for those holiday dollars. Then the competition pushes their games to 2010 too. You can't delay the smackdown, it's gonna happen sooner or later.

I worry that all the games pushed to early 2010 will crowd eachother, sales will disappoint, then the dumbass game producers will learn the wrong lesson; ie, we shoulda released games on around Xmas!
