Destructoid is gaming news, community, videos, and sometimes love. Take the tour or jump in with Facebook:

Big fat action games are my bread and butter and there's no denying that Heavenly Sword is looking like it'll be the biggest and fattest thus far in this fledgling generation. It contains the only three things I like in life -- leggy redheads with swords, brutal melee combat and the chance to mess up a bunch of my fellow countrymen. The demo is available on the PlayStation Network, but if you want some more, check out the footage above that shows off the game's aerial counters.

Hit the jump for a second video, one I declare a true treat, for it's a rather villainous cutscene of an evil fish n' chips king and his Eurotrash freaks that has, by all accounts, blown me away. All I can think of when watching it are old school adventure movies like Willow and Krull. The kind of epic fantasy films that they just don't make anymore. That is not a bad thing. It's got a dry, dark wit delivered by some amazing voice acting and it looks stunning. I hope the God of War similarities don't discourage people from checking this game out, because it appears to have all the makings of a franchise in its own right.

that second one looked so damn REAL. god bless technology. almost puts me in the mood to buy a PS3. did i say buy? i meant never think about owning such an expensive platform even though those are some of the best animations i've ever seen of a human face.

cutscene looks much more interesting than the game itself. rare that any video game makes me laugh. kinda reminded me of 'time bandits'. i won't have to worry about playing the game until 7 years from now when the system is $129 and the games are 20 bucks.

holy ????? shit.... that Cutscene Where was it!?!? Wow... that is really puts FF Spirits Within to shame... shit even the new movie coming Bewoulf is doubtful against this.

Well guys when you play the game is very different from when seeing it. My lil bro saw me play it said "bah, same as GoW2" but when he played it, he was laughin and having fun but got his ass raped in the second part, he loves it now. Theres many counter attacks + Grabbing moves but in this video the guy just spammed the aerial kick one.

If you dont have a PS3 I suggest you go to your nearest friend or VG store with a PS3 with HS Demo and try it out, it is fun and addictive + from the 2 cut scenes ive seen, the story is so deep you can make a movie out of it.

If that's all in game, consider this game bought.

the demo was cool but man you need to be a member of MENSA to remember all the combo's. i just want to play a video game and not need to study the combo list for days to get the most out of the gameplay.

Holy crap, that cutscene was unbelievable! I downloaded the behind-the-scenes video from the PS Store (btw, DrkAdonis, they did use Andy Serkis for the voice and likeness of the villain, King Bohan), and it showed them doing facial mo-cap with Serkis and the people playing the other characters — I had no idea that it would all come together to create something this fluid, lifelike, and well-acted. I can’t wait for this game!

@BrOnXbOmBr21: Thanks for that info! I don't have access to the PS Store right now, so I wasn't aware of any 'official' news on it... but I knew it had to be something like that. The character looks too much like Serkis for it NOT to be mapped from his face. And the voice... yeah. A great fit.

Yes, exactly - the up until now I've not caredabout this game in the least. I hadn't seen *anything* interesting, not even Nariko's hair interested me.

This cutscene interests me. I look forward to watching all of the cutscenes on the internet when this game comes out.

Nice cutscene. Really nice. Would be nicer if their faces had actually moved a little between actual talk-animations: As it is, it looks just unreal enough to bother me. Uncanny Valley, y'all!

Wow, I guess it's just me but the cutscene really didn't do it for me. The voice-acting was very well done, but the facial expressions were awkward, and I reallt started to get creeped out since the way they moved just didn't feel very real. I'm not impressed, but then again the game would have to jerk me off to really impress me. The gameplay looks decent, but not really my cup of tea.

then Grim, theres no CG cutscene today that impresses you. that quality surpases FF CG character expression and if im not mistaken, thats one of the top notch.

If its because the characters are weird? thats the whole point... they are.

i thought the cd cutscene was fairly impressive for cg, though the eyes were a bit shiny. uncanny valley, indeed. i was more impressed with the writing and production. not wholly original, but entertaining nonetheless.

well deiga you can just "button mash" but there are three key battle styles,Speed Style,Ranged Style and Power Style that have many different combos for each. to me thats alot, some may like that but for me i really don't want to be trying to remember every different button i need to push to perform a certain move.
that being said i'm still going to play it when it comes out and maybe i'll do a few less bong hits when i first get into the game :)

Mistress of the Blade

Nariko's Heavenly Sword can change its physical form in mid-attack, allowing you to string together massive custom combos. Here are the three key battle styles you'll use to crush your foes.

* Speed Style: Nariko's default battle stance lets her slash nearby foes with rapid short-sword strikes. It's your best defense for close encounters.

* Ranged Style: Much like Kratos's Blades of Athena from God of War, these chain swords let you pick off distant foes, or hook one and slam him into the ground.

* Power Style: In this broad-sword form, the Heavenly Sword dishes out mammoth damage to nearby enemies. It's slow, but deadly.

look at the screens from the demo of the different combos.also not that in the screens it just shows a few combos but in the game you scroll down for even more combos.

The gameplay could be great if only the AI wasn't so rock stupid. I find it kind of amusing to see people drool over Castle Crashers while 3D button mashing like this gets a "meh".

The cut scene was pretty good thanks to excellent voice acting, but I'm a little sick of stuff being too dark. Did all this baroque lighting start with Doom3 or something?

Am I the only one who is thinking "Lame god of war ripoff"?

Who am I kidding, more like 2nd rate GoW. Watch that video again and tell me if the enemies do much more than stand there idly while you whip on them. No enemy AI, and the gameplay looks like a pale imitation of something that has been done before and better on the ps2.

This demo is fun to play over and over-trying out the stances, counters, combos, etc. No lag and near perfect gameplay. Cant wait for the whole ball of wax. The cut scenes and characters are eerily real and dont seem generic like so many other games. As developers start taking risks and utilizing the spu's the ps3 will slowly start pulling away form the rest of the competition until another system is created which can compete. By this time next year, barring a new xbox 720, the ps3 will be "the next gen system"

Everyone keeps talking about the dumb AI... but have you played a final release yet? Didn't think so...

Chances are, the AI used in the demo is not nearly the 'hard' setting. Chances are it's the 'Very Easy' setting. It's just to let you get a taste of how the game controls, etc, etc... not to actually provide a challenge.

I'm not one to bitch, but never, in all my time on dtoid, have I ever gotten one of these videos to play. Which sucks. Because after that itty-bitty 30 second demo that I downloaded off the PS Store, I am legitimately in love with this game.

Demo was a blast to play, and yes while not very challenging and too short, when you get the hang of it its still fun. The first time I played it I died when I tried to play it as god of war. But since I've refined my gameplay and I've been trying different things and every time its different. If you like button mashing this might not be the best choice. However, you can get it done with just mashing buttons but its not nearly as fun as pulling off the different combos, maybe try the new DDR for slow kids where you just jump on the mat over and over and drool in the provided sadness bowl.
