Heads up: Wii Recharge Station can damage your Wii Remotes photo

There's two types of Wii owners. The ones like yours truly head to Sam's Club to buy an obscenely large package of AA batteries to support your multiple gaming devices (it usually breaks down to $.30 or so per battery). The rest use some kind of rechargeable solution, and many Wii owners have opted to use a charge base. If you're one of those that happens to own the Psyclone Wii Recharge Station, you may appreciate this heads up.

Wired's Game|Life says that these chargers can actually damage your Wii Remotes if you leave them in too long. It seems that the batteries can overheat as the charger doesn't know when to stop adding "juice" to the batteries. From the product page:

WARNING - Rechargeable batteries left unattended in the recharge unit for an extended period of time may cause the batteries and/or unit to overheat. If the Wii (TM) remote doesn't charge properly or begins to heat up, please stop the charge process and contact our customer service line to prevent further damage. If you feel that your batteries are heating up, please do not use those batteries any more. We are happy to help you and replace your product.

Game|Life also points out that the product's Amazon page is packed with negative comments. A quick check of the first page of reviews showed that every reviewer claims to have lost at least one Wii Remote by using this product.

That 48 pack of AA batteries isn't looking so bad now, huh?

[Thanks, JR]

The Nyko one is awesome. No overheating, and the battery packs last longer than the higher-end Duracell batteries

I bought some Rayovac hybrid rechargeables. For $10, you get 2 AAs and 2 AAAs with the charger. For $8 more, you get 4 AAs. Charging takes about 4 hours and the charges last for a long time. I play Wii games daily and I get about 2 weeks out of a single charge.

I have the Nyko charge station, and it works fantastically for one of my controllers, but the second battery pack seems to have died within about 4 months. I'll call that 50% approval.

I would just use rechargeable batteries, theres a variety of kinds on the market nowadays and they are very inexpensive. Since the batteries charge in a separate charger they should not damage the remotes, they will get slightly hot in the charger so just wait till they cool before inserting them into the remotes.

Stop messing around and go pick up some 15 minute rechargeables. They will last over 2 times as long, and can be used in other products.

As plenty of other people have said, the Nyko charge station is the best choice for powering your Wii remotes. I've had mine since it came out and have nothing but great things to say about it. ^_^

This fucking thing bricked 2 of my wiimotes on xmas day. Melted the battery packs and the insides of my controllers. Huge Fire Hazard! I called Psyclone and wrote them an email but have yet to hear back from them

I personally recommend one of these. I couldn't stand the grips that Nyko put on their battery packs so I went with Penguin United's charging solution and its been great!

5/5 Dolphins!

there were other charge stations?

I thought Nyko was the only one? Well anyway, Nyko seems to be damn good anyway for a third party. The charge station is awesome for what it is though.

This is why I just use brand-name, rechargeable battereies -- Duracell, Panasonic, whatever. Yeah, it means that I have to -- horrors! -- replace the batteries manually, but the 2,600 mAh versions need a hell of a long time before they need to be recharged. And at least they charge in their own rechargers, so there's no chance of damaging the Wiimote.

Oh and the instruction booklet says nothing about leaving it in too long may damage it. I'm going to demand as much as I can from these fuckers.

Yeah, for sure. I told them in my email i wanted a refund for the charger and reimbursement for my controllers. This was the only acceptable option for them to do since there is no warning in the instruction manual. Those guys even admit there is an issue by the disclaimer on their website. There was a guy on the Amazon site that said after he bitched enough that they replaced his charger d gave him 2 $50 Target Gift certs to replace his remotes. These guys are lucky they havent burned someone's house down already.

I bought myself a pack of rechargeable energizer batteries on boxing day and have been using those since. Not quite as classy as having a charge station, but they're doing the trick. Sure beats searching for extra AA's every two days from excessive Wii use.

Unfortunately for me, I was one of those first-page Amazon reviews. The dead remote doesn't even work with regular batteries--on the contrary, it overheats with those now thanks to this POS. When I saw the engrish in the manual, it never occured to me that QC would be that bad.

Nyko gets a thumbs-up from me. I got that one after the Psyclone charger bricked one of my wiimotes.

BTW, Cheeburga's onto something. Nintendo should've made aftermarket battery packs and chargers like Microsoft did.

I use normnal rechargeable batteries and nothing else. Maybe they should put a big warning into the Owners' Manual: "DON'T BUY THIRD PARTY CRAP. IF OYU DO; ALL RESULTS ARE YOUR OWN DAMN FAULT.", or something.

I got a call from Joe from Psyclone this morning. He was very professional and basically said he would take care of everything, including my bricked wiimotes. Fingers crossed.

I've had this Pysclone Wiimote charger since Christmas and I have had my Wiimotes inside the WHOLE time since. That's 12 days straight now that it's the 5th of January. I just read this right now and took them out right away. Fortunately, there was no damage to my Wiimotes and I also tried regular batteries which still worked as well. I almost flipped when I read this but no damages have occurred. Is it safe to say that this one is ok to use? Or am I just playing with fire?

Take this into consideration. I had a psyclone, and it warmed up fast. I like many, was very hasty in purchasing what seemed to be such a wonderful concept. However, if you think about what happens when the battery charges, it might help you to understand. The batteries are ALWAYS connected to the wiimote. Keep that in mind. Now then. While the charging is taking place, the power that is being put into the battery can also in theory be running throughout the remote as well, which means that if the battery is heating up (as most do while charging) then the wiimote would NEVER get a break from electricity, as the charger would be running juice through the wiimote. This in turn would decrease the longevity of your wiimote. Imagine playing non-stop, 24/7 with a wiimote. and then on the other hand using a second wiimote only 2-6 hours at a time off and on. Which do you think would wear out faster? Of course, the one with the most use. Long story short, using a charger that leaves the batteries IN the wiimote will be not only like using the wiimote nonstop while its on the charger, BUT, it uses MORE juice than regular play, AND these new charging stations dont have power cutoff, to stop the charging once the battery is full... So where does all of that extra electricity go? You got it. Into your now burned up wiimote. Thats my theory. As for Nintendos stance, they do not condone the use of rechargeable batteries in their remotes. One has to wonder if this is ALL rechargeable batteries, or if it mainly pertains to the ones which charge while IN the remote. (my guess is an external charged battery of good quality would suffice)
