Haze will require a 4GB+ install, will run in sub-HD 1024x576 photo

As Hamza just noted, Haze hits this week, and the developers have been busy answering questions on the Ubi forum. To our surprise, the May 16 update reveals two ugly technical facts about the game: a rather large required install and no true 720p.

Time to delete your porn, kids! When developers were asked if we'd see a forced install (see previous Capcom debacle) they simply responded no, just a "minimal 4GB install". We'd like to offer that 1/10th of some people's hard drives barely qualifies as minimal and are hoping that we won't have to sit through a 20-minute install à la Devil May Cry (5GB install) on first play.  Since the trend doesn't seem to be wavering, we dare ask the question again: Are forced installs on consoles here to stay?

The tubby footprint on the game is peculiar when accompanied with the second factoid: it missed the mark in HD to sustain smooth frame rates. Doh!

The game is not presented in true HD

An interview with Free Radical confirmed that Haze with be 300,000 pixels shy of true 720p resolution, marking another high-profile shooter that misses the spec (Halo 3 was 640p). At the very least the PS3 will pat you on the back and try its best to upscale. That's not to say the game won't look terrific, but if you've just filed for a second mortgage to buy a 1080p television then you're probably not thrilled to hear it.

We can only hope that what it lacks in technical specs are more than made up in gameplay and multiplayer replay value.

[Thanks, Justin]

I was mever too excited for Haze. I played the demo, and ,while it was cool, wasn't enough to completely sell me. I have never ever cared abut anything HD, as long as the game doesn't look like complete utter shit, I'm happy.

But I never was a big fan of forced installs. On a good game I was excited for, like GTA4, I don't mind. But Haze really isn't worth deleting all of my dead hooker porn just to play it.

@MagesX : So true.

Meh, 4gb's of SD mediocrity. On the plus side i expect in a couple of weeks after release you'll be able to buy this game on clearance for a third the price.

Free Radical should really start making PC games. You know they wanna. The only PC game they released was Second Sight, and that was packaged with Starforce (thanks a fucking lot, Codemasters), but they could do so much more. Timesplitters 1 was my first modern console FPS (i.e. one with dual stick movement and looking. My ACTUAL first console FPS was Final Doom on the PS1), and it was also my first intro to level editing (RPG maker doesn't count), and I really wish they'd progress with me to greener pastures instead of sticking to the console fps game.

I wont say its the end of the world cause its not "True HD" I do prefer a game to play good then be a slide show full of eye candy. But I fear this pre install crap is here to stay and I do not like that one bit. It does lesson load times so it has some benifits. Though it does not eliminate them, even fully installed PC's have load times its just the hard drive has much faster access times. I really think in alot of cases this is just easier than optimising for Blu Ray Oblivian duplicated data all over the disk to reduse loads and its not that they have to do this they could optimise it but this is easier and cheaper and found that people are willing to put up with it. And now that pandoras box is open we are stuck with it.

it's such bullshit that these games are not ALL done at 1080p.when i bought my PS3 i thought they would be the leader in HD games but they are really screwing the public up the cornhole with the subpar resolutions..but its sony so i should have expected to get screwed over.

I really don't see what people are complaining about with the install as far as time. I installed GTA4 THREE TIMES the night I got it in a vain attempt to fix the freezing issues (why no one at Rockstar suggested disabling Internet earlier, even after it was a known fix, I can't imagine). That's at least 20 minutes right there.

It really isn't a big deal, get over it.

Okay science time!
576x720 (576p) = 414,720 pixels.
720x1280 (720p) = 921,600
576x1280 (Haze) = 589,824
720p - Haze = 331,776
576p - Haze = 175,104

Just for those who really needed the break down of numbers, Also my math could be horribly wrong.

And where the hell are the people who constantly scream graphics aren't everything! Let's go drug based gameplay!

How can they possibly fail so hard with such a promising game? Oh, yeah. That's right. It's a Sony exclusive. Wake me when the eventual Microsoft port gets it right.

Anyway, I must say I agree with y0j1mb0 who recently blogged on this topic. You calling anyone a "fanboy" is the very definition of the pot calling the kettle black. And I've only just come to know of your existence from this thread.

"I think it should also be noted that" the list of "natively 1080p" 360 games is ADMITTEDLY misleading. On the site they list all of the games that have the 1080p lable on the back but for which they have no developer confirmation of "native" 1080p resolution.

There at 36 games on that 360 list. Some of them we know AREN'T native 1080p, but you'd have to be a dipshit to believe that NONE of them hit that mark. That site ADMITTEDLY has no idea if they actually do or not.

Too Much Coffee Man is completely right to be mad at Sony for spewing blatant lies to the public. Facts are facts and 9 out of 10 multiplatform games look/run better on the 360 compared to the PS3. Eurogamer has like a dozen articles that prove it. The reasons for this discrepency aside, Sony's games aren't performing anywhere near as well as we were promised they would.

Two things piss me off above all else on internet forums: Misinformation passed as fact, and ignorant Fanboys who don't question anything that supports their Fanboyism. You sir, represent both of these things.

(Note: The ONLY "next gen" console I own is the PS3. I love it and play it constantly but that doesn't mean I'm going to felate Sony and not call them on their bullshit)

Lol, half the games on that 1080p list aren't particularly graphicaly demanding.

I'd be pretty fucking surprised if games like flOw, Pixeljunk and Blast Factor weren't in 1080p. Also, stuff like Tekken doesn't have that much to draw on the screen at once either. Games like Harry Potter aren't particularly visually stunning either.

Come back with that argument when there's something like GTA or a big FPS or a few other things running in that resolution that actually matter.

if it has good antialiasing then I can forgive most things, I thing the res issue is a bit annoying. 1080p is for bluray video, forget about the games. Not hitting 720 p is poor.
Another 4 Gb install is bad too. This trend is only going to annoy in the long run.
Burnt Meatloaf's Avatar - Comment posted on 05/20/2008 05:47

you know, 4GB install for almost SD graphics should give everyone an idea as to the priorities and talent of the developers involved.

There is no excuse for any PS3 game to be less than 720p at 60FPS. If there is, the developers suck... so move along.

Cripes... don't these people know that their software is going to suck, or at least get bad publicity? Every time I bash the Wii for its technical incompetence, I see a story like this. Does anyone really know what they are supposed to be doing these days? Is software development truly a lost art?

I don't care about Haze, it looks like a terrible game and Korn sucks, but forced installs and last gen resolutions I do care about as it has become a trend.

I saw your point you were not slagging off haze just laughing at Phil missleading consumers to buy there machine. Its like someone trying to sell you a car which does 200mph when it really only does 120mph!! Not good at all!
Apart from that the game looks average...nothing wrong with the lower res if you get better frame rates etc. The installs sux balls!! I dont find anything wrong with loads between levels gives me time to get ready for it, especially if the last level has been a bit manic!!

LoL and you had the audacity to try and paint me as a fanboy. it's ironic how you say in this thread that you will not be buying HAZE & that the article is meaningless because nobody cares about HAZE; yet on your profile page you have
"My most anticipated titles are:

MGS4,
Little Big Planet,
Killzone 2,
Grand Turismo 5,
Haze," <---

in your comment:
"I think it should also be noted that currently there are only 3 *Native 1080p games for the 360. While there are 26 *Natively 1080p games. The rest are upscaled."

that link? it's COMPLETELY wrong. notice there's nothing to back it up? try the Beyond3D console tech forum.

i already went over both for both systems in my first comment. i did not include Aracade games (for either system) though because those are very light on resources. the titles (in that very inaccurate link u posted) majority of them are wrong, not 1920x1080.

i find it ironic you will believe that list, but at the bottom of the same page where you click "List of Xbox 360 1080p games" and it lists 35; yet you list it as 3 while listing their full amount as accurate for ps3 from the same site. you will believe their extremely inaccurate ps3 list, but not the (also inaccurate) 360 one? mmmhmm

Please see my first comment on this story to see the actual native 1080p titles & confirm it at Beyond3D.

this whole thing sort of reminds me of Tom Sawyer getting Ben Rogers to whitewash his fence for him. by the time Ben realizes he's been tricked hes too disappointed w/ himself for being duped that he tries to convince himself doing it really is fun. denial, projection, transference

@ PixelJunky, ive been reading on the net and there are installs for the two games you mentioned, but they are aroung 500mb also here is an explanation to the HDD installs:

The fine folks over at the MTV Multiplayer blog did some digging and found that the problem isn't really in the speed of the Blu-Ray format, as some have suggested, but rather in how it differs from DVD. "By nature, the outer and inner parts of a disc move at different speeds while a disc is spinning," former 1UP news editor Patrick Klepek explains. "While DVD drives can read data at those differing speeds, Blu-ray reads at one speed. Combine that with the extremely large size of Blu-ray discs, and simply dumping existing DVD data onto a Blu-ray disc will inevitably result in longer load times." So basically, developers are used to DVD encoding, and some aren't making the extra effort to optimize it for Blu-ray.

This would result in slow load times, except that developers have started taking up mandatory installs to dump some of the data onto the hard drive. The report does note that several multiplatform games such as the recently released Dark Sector don't have installs but are equal on both Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, so the developers have found workarounds to optimize for Blu-ray in some cases. Others, like Unreal Tournament III give players the option of installing. So clearly, choices exist for developers to avoid the mandatory install; it just may take a while for all of them to adopt the techniques."

If this were on the 360, you wouldn't be complaining methinks. Let's not forget the "charge people $50 per year for online gaming, and oh, if you've a game has a massive bug in it (see Capcom vs. SNK 2 do-a-super-move-finisher-and-kill-the-music), you're only going to get it patched if you pay up."

ALL console manufacturers have something someone is going to disagree with their system. But hey, the gamer herd gets what the gamer herd wants and that's another chance to take cheap shots at Sony. Let them eat cake, I say.

Is installing a game to a hard drive to eradicate load times for said yellow-visor-and-crack game *really* that big of a deal? And if it is, why aren't the D-toid editors taking issue with the developers themselves and not the console manufacturer?

Oh wait, that's right. Sony's a bigger target, nobody likes them, and this isn't Gamasutra.

Do you honestly (and I'm asking this rhetorically of the D-toid readership) think that Microsoft and Nintendo are the true bastions of all that is good and noble? The D-toid robot giving MS a BJ? Is that some personal fantasy of yours? Get a room.

I'm just stating the obvious that all companies lie, maybe that's a harsh term, let's use the phrase "embellish," yes, "embellish" in order to sell their wares. The gaming industry is, after all, an industry, and industries are in it for the money, money which you and your ill-informed ilk are all too ready to spend. But the meaning of my post was apparently, yet not at all surprisingly, lost on you, as your only ever-so-eloquent retort projecting your hothot green toy robot on Microsoft's manhood oral fixation.

...hey, your words, not mine. I know all companies lie, and it's not just limited to the game industry either. But that's okay, because I enjoy playing video games.

Blu3steel, you need a new hobby. What, with three consoles out now, and you're posting raunchy robot-on-software-conglomerate erotica on an anonymous forum? Video games obviously aren't doing it for you. Maybe writing cyborg erotica is in your cards.

First of all, I said, "It was horrible," which should have implied that I didn't like it. But I'll give you that one because your cyborg erotica joke was kind of funny. I think I could make a pretty good carrier out of that.

Secondly, I don't care about your "arguments" and your "points" and nobody else does. No one should love any of these companies more than the other, and, really, having actual love for a company/console is ridiculous. Play videogames because you like them. Don't go on the internet and try to "convert" people to your love. Life would be so much better.

In conclusion, Yo mama.
