HAWPcast: Why Did You Show Me That photo

Hey Ash, Whatcha Playin' is a surreal comedy series made by Anthony and Ashly Burch. They do a (semi) weekly podcast.

This week's episode of the HAWPcast is, perhaps thankfully, a little shorter than our other episodes.

Clocking in at just under an hour, Ash and I discuss comics, Terry Gilliam, westerns, Joss Whedon, The Sims, and political assassination. You can listen to it here (click the iTunes button on the right side of the page if you want to get it that way).

(About halfway through, Ash freaks out about a picture I've sent her. This is the picture.)

I am a little disappointed in Anthony here, but in the same way I'm a little relieved. Because up until this point, I was crushed by how similar our opinions on nearly everything were. In film and games, it was eerie, and honestly, getting a little absurd to the point where I would expect any contribution in Podtoid or the like would be an input that I, myself, would add.

But jeez, it was a very jarring but somewhat welcome sign that Anthony and I are very different minds (hurrah!) when I heard his feelings about "Gypsy". I mean, come on, did you actually think that the theme behind that musical was that exploitation of children for self-fulfillment? How did you even reach that conclusion by the final song? It seems like not only could you have no been more wrong, but it was a conscious effort to read nothing into any of the characters or their actions. Then you condemn the medium as a whole.

Anyway, as I was saying, thank you Anthony for making clear the line between you and I.

The Ed Edd and Eddy movie was probably one of the best things Cartoon Network's put out in a good while, the show was one of my favorites as I was growing up and like Company, this is one of my first true times where I took the opposition to an opinion of yours though I suppose it was bound to happen eventually. Also, it's a real shame that you'd put down theater altogether, perhaps it's just a different story telling style that you're not used to.

Otherwise though, I enjoyed the HAWPcast.

@Br Robo: I completely forgot about the slamming of Ed, Edd and Eddy. I listened to this episode almost two days ago, so I guess it slipped my mind in favor of the theater bashing.

As something of an animation nerd and a dedicated art student, I have always maintained that Ed, Edd and Eddy was one of the best cartoon shows I have ever seen (pales in comparison to Courage, though). Now I may not watch a lot of cartoons, myself. But there are a lot of hallmarks of real talent just oozing out of that show.

Just watch the color pallets, the background art, and the character archetypes were all so well crafted that I couldn't help but enjoy it. In fact, I think I enjoy it more now than I used to; I watched a marathon a few months ago and I was blown away by how much the show resonated with me.

I mean, come on. Rolf? Fucking hilarious.

So this is the like the second time you mentioned that you don't understand the non American view of Obama and why he was displayed in Docter Who or whatever.

So basically I think it's because the American president is the closest thing to a world leader. He symbolically the most powerful man on earth.
If you show the Master as the president of American is the best next thing to showing his as the leader of the world.

You may disagree with the whole “American president is the closest thing to a world leader” but whatever.
The presidency of America has much larger effect over other countries then say Spanish Prime Minister does. I and most other people in the world don’t know who the Spanish Prime Minister is, or who the Brazilian leader is or whatever but everyone knows the American President.

When the American elections were talking place it was covered here on TV in the same scale as the British elections.
Some people even stated that non American should be able to vote cos it effects them so much, obviously this is stupid but it is true how much of an effect America has on the rest of the world.

Ed, Edd, and Eddie is the worst cartoon ever :( I don't know why that is still on TV.
