HAWPcast: oh god Super Mario RPG is so good photo

This episode of the HAWPcast isn’t any more focused or elegant than any of the others, but we do spend the majority of it talking about videogames, at the very least.

The discussed games include Call of Duty: World at War, Final Fantasy X-2, Bayonetta, and Super Mario RPG. Unfortunately, neither Ash nor myself have completed any of the Mario & Luigi RPGs, so we spend an awful lot of time awkwardly bemoaning the fact that the Paper Mario series was disappointing in comparison to Squaresoft’s Nintendo RPG.

Still, hope you enjoy it.

I never liked Super Mario RPG too much, I got it at someone's suggestion on the Virtual Console but I've barely played it. Paper Mario on the other hand...

My all time favorite Mario game by far. Third party'd by Square, no less. Such an excellent, excellent game.

Definitely the best game of the era and possibly my favorite game.

Fantastic. I love Super Mario RPG, and still play it annually, but never got into the other games. For starters, Paper Mario is severely lacking in the frequency of mustache jokes.

I love RPG, just rarely have the time to get into them. I think Super Mario RPG was the last RPG I beat 100%! <3 It's been forever since I visited this old friend. Maybe it's time to rekindle that friendship. ;)

I never owned this game, but I had a GamePro strategy guide to it, and I found the story fascinating. For a few years after I got it, I would still read that strategy guide. I had one opportunity to play the game but couldn't get into it because I had imagined such a great game in my head.

Don't get me wrong: Super Mario RPG is fantastic and deeply nostalgic for me, but Thousand Year Door was a phenomenal game.

Thousand Year Door > Inside Story > or = Superstar Saga > Super Mario RPG > or = Paper Mario > Super Paper Mario > Partners in Time

These are the facts, ladies and gentlemen...and they are not disputed.

The bit on matching gameplay and aesthetics, especially when they're both absurd, makes me think of God Hand. It's been ages since I've played it, and I didn't actually get very far (so we meet again, ADD), but the game was over-the-top through and through, pairing inane characters with manic-but-solid combat mechanics made for a really enjoyable experience. I suppose it runs the risk of crossing that "Scary Movie" line, but I think it keeps its face just straight enough that you feel like it's doing something really smart and definitely entertaining.

Or maybe I'm thinking of F Troop reruns. My memory really isn't so good.

I haven't really played that many Mario RPGs, but my favorite would have to go to Superstar Saga.

I meant to comment this after listening to a previous Hawpcast where How I Met Your Mother was mentioned. Life is too short to spend watching half-decent comedies like HIMYM. I've seen the show before, and it was funnier when it was called Friends. This is coming from a guy who has, by proxy, watched most of first 4 seasons because one of my retarded friends loves the show.

Listen to Linde, watch Chuck instead.

This was a great HAWPcast.
I am loving the stuff you and Ash put out.
I myself was never a privileged owner of legend of the seven stars, but I did rent it once a month when I was younger. That game was my first introduction into RPG's, and possibly also the introduction into how games can truly blow your mind. The second game to blow my mind was Killer Instinct, but that was just because I was really good at getting really lucky at pulling off fatality moves.
