HAWPcast: no resettin' photo

Hey Ash, Whatcha Playin' is a surreal comedy series made by Anthony and Ashly Burch. They do a (semi) weekly podcast.

This week's HAWPcast starts off like your typical nostalgia trip -- Ash used to participate in forum-based roleplaying, har har har -- before turning into a more specific discussion about "hangout" games like Animal Crossing and Harvest Moon, which then somehow turns into a discussion about Left 4 Dead 2, which then turns into a discussion about nonlinear story delivery.

You can listen to this week's episode here, or subscribe to the show on iTunes.

If you want to read the Resetti article we reference about halfway through, you can do so here.

You are absolutely spot on in your musing about not championing great games. You guys just sneer at mainstream games and bitch at gamers for not demanding more from their medium, but you never actually talk about how great games are great. In order for videogames to be considered Art, you need a body of essays that champion them as such. Hitchcock was just another jaggoff director until Godard and Truffaut said he was more than that. You need to do more Cahiers du' Cinema-style shit. And no more bitching!

@Rev
Always thoughtful and illuminating. I'm saddened about one thing in the podcast, though. You talk of the survivors meeting up and some get shot and stuff in the CEDA camp. I posted this a few hours into the comments of your "Why the survivors might be infected"
post:
"A possibility: Maybe in L4D3, each campaign will have a different set of (L4D1 and L4D2) survivors. Or maybe a heart-wrenching what-if: Let's say there's a section where the survivors are being "cleansed" (killed) by CEDA and 2 from each game survive to make a L4D1+2 hybrid team. :O (Please kill Francis and Ellis.)"

Gimme some credit for my crackpot theory, sir!

I played L4F with Dtoiders (and Jim) on Steam a couple of days ago. Was great fun but what Anthony said was right: it IS fucking hard to keep the Boomer alive.

I know this is late and random as hell but that analogy about cutscenes and putting up a piece of text during a film? I voiced almost the exact same analogy a few months ago:

Inserting a cutscene into a videogame is like inserting a page of the script into the middle of a movie and expecting people to read it.

I can only hope this telepathy starts going both ways, Anthony. :]
