But, I can't tell you which one, because you're one of the people I lied to, Chad. I'm so sorry.
I bought Halo 3 becuase of the hype train for $20 and after about 40 mins Halo 3 is no longer in my household.
Truth be told, if I never played another Left 4 Dead game again it would be too soon.
I think in situations like this, the best way to handle them is to just give a roundabout, non-committal answer. Like "Yeah I've played it. It can be a fun game to play with friends and family. I know lots of people who love them!" This way, you can satisfy the crowd by giving a positive comment, without compromising your own gamer integrity.
Because chances are they didn't really care whether you like fucking Carnival Games or not. They probably don't even really like it themselves, having only played it once or twice and was just moderately entertained for 20 minutes. They were just trying to have a pleasant conversation, no need to give them your life story on gaming or blindly agree to fit in.
On the other hand, if the group continues to express genuine interests on games, then by all means dump some knowledge on them chumps. It all depends on whether they really want to hear your opinions, or they just want you to smile and nod so they can move onto the next topic.
Now tell the truth, you lied because there were hot chicks in the group, ammirite?
Good point about the core gamers, they need to slowly enter our world to experience it as even showing my parents a controler that has 16+ buttons and triggers there mind swells.
Also, Chad lied for the potato ball's.
Last week I was having lunch with my gf's friends and one of the guys said he loves playing Call of Duty. I was thinking, "great, I play black ops." Then he mentioned how he only plays Modern Warfare 1 on EASY campaign mode because online people know the maps too well, and he doesn't like xbox 360 because the controller doesn't feel right and he only likes Sony.
Realizing the disparities between our opinions, experiences and sources of knowledge I said, "those games ARE tough. That campaign IS awesome!" Then moved on to the next topic. Why even bother waxing a lecture on someone who cares so little about games? If all he knows is that he has fun playing the 1st Modern Warfare on the easiest setting, I won't take that from him. I'm not Roger Ebert.
I'm definitely aware of the sense of social pressure you're talking about though! At that point, based on my "read" of the crowd, I'll try to push the conversation in a direction that seems fun for everyone. I probably wouldn't lie about having played the game, but I might tell a white lie like "Seems fun!" even when I don't think so, just to encourage them to open up and talk more about games.
But seriously, I would have probably done the same. Or at least not have voiced my rate about it.
I might avoid blurting out "the games you like suck," but if I'm directly asked? Of course I'll tell them if I'm not a fan.
Being honest isn't a free pass to be an ass.
Like having to hype MW3.
I don't care for it at all (and no offense to those that do), but for awhile I had to make it sound like the 2nd coming of Jesus.
I listed what I disliked about a popular game to a customer, and he called corporate and complained.
Brought me hours of laughs.
If someone asks for my honest opinion about a video game, I will give them it.
...Seriously? Hating on Seven Samurai? I'm sorry, but when viewing old films you DO have to make concessions for the standards of the times, because the only reason Seven Samurai may feel dated to you is because every fucking body ripped it off.
*head explodes*
I FUCKING HATE ASSASSIN'S CREED. I hate it so much that it was Jim's horrible review of Assassin's Creed that drew me to this site to begin with. Seriously, I'll never understand it, but people actually like that game. And like you Chad, I hate being that guy. "Ugh it's so repetitive," "Ugh, the combat system is broken, ugh." So whenever people start talking about it I just start talking really loud about Donkey Kong Country Returns, Portal 2, or NHL 11.
You're not being phony, people got to get to know each other somehow, and its usually through fluffy superficial conversation starters like what you mentioned.
Yeah, I wouldn't want to be that guy either.
Yeah, I'm "that" guy, and I'm proud. Someone has to be the "brutally honest" and hated one, and that's me.
Such examples that cause me to flip my lid are Final Fantasy, or more recently Assassin's Creed. Seriously, how the fuck do people enjoy these games lately?
I really like Just Dance, Mario Kart e o Futebol do Mario.
Oh, but I suppose I've pretended to like Final Fantasy VII less than I do whenever the group I'm talking to has made the collective decision to just shit on it mercilessly. It isn't like it's my favorite in the series anyway (I'm quite fond of it, but I don't love it like IX and VI), but holy shit, when the venom comes out, does it ever come out for that one.
So... yeah, to my knowledge I haven't clearly lied about anything so much as avoided making everyone else in the room want to punch me in the face.
