I look forward to the day where there will be something to be gained from compromising my integrity for profit or popularity.
I do reverse lying a lot. People will ask me if I like Metal Gear Solid and I'm like, "Yeah, they're ok," when in my mind I'm like "Alight bitch, let me break it down to you why you're a goddamned idiot for even thinking I would like this god awful buttfuck of a series. I got a long ass list, so sit your ass down and grab some lemonade."
Yeah.
Fuck those games are awesome
"Yeah, that World of Warcraft game is for losers." - Me 5 years ago, when I was trapped in a hellish WoW addiction
But I disgress. I never lied to anybody else about that kind of things, and I guess that's why I never get invited to parties anymore.
But seriously,I don't have a problem speaking my mind about games, but I do respect people for liking a game because they have fun with it. A person could love a game with broken mechanics, but as long as they love it then we all win. I think. Ha. It's like when a parent buys a child a toy, only to see them playing with the box it came with afterwards. o_0
But I guess sometimes its better to be like everyone else, blend in with the crowd, compromise what makes you, you. I can't really do it most of the time though, which is probably why I have no friends.
Sometimes I wish I was weaker minded and willed. Then I would just love all the bullshit everyone else flocks to, and I would be happy. Ignorance truly is bliss I guess.
IMO parties don't count when giving opinions about games. Or anything, for that matter.
I said I liked Bloody Roar.
I said I liked Gears of War.
Bloody Roar is a broken piece of shit. (lolChronos)
Gears of War's 'color scheme' gives me legit migraines.
And that's cool. They're not really dumb. They're just easily amused.
I think Final Fantasy X was one of the worst RPGs ever made. I believe Twilight Princess is Zelda with all the magic that made the Zelda series so special removed. MGS4 had a convoluted and silly story that was poorly told... Resident Evil 5 was a complete raping of a once great series... Dragon Age was incomplete and incredibly sloppy at times...
You get the picture?
So do I ever just shut my fucking mouth and let people love games that I think are piss poor? You bet your ass I do. I am a likable person, I won't lie, but I am not going to shit on someone else's opinions. So I leave all the controversy for the internet. Cheers!
P.S. Don't even get me started on movies... Seven Samurai is only good when viewed exclusively through rose tinted glasses, you can't make concessions for a film just because it is old! I don't care how excellent the cinematography is, every other aspect doesn't hold up to modern standards.
I get what you're saying, Chad, about not wanting to be that guy, the snobby, pompous "cultured" gamer. But you don't have to be like "Carnival Games sucks compared to Okami!" You know what I do?
"Nah, I don't like those games. I'm a Mario/Zelda/Pokeman fan."
Those are household names...or at least, they used to be. You mention Pokeman, people are all "I loved that game when I was little!", etc.
You can still uphold your gaming beliefs without coming across as arrogant. It's really a common social rule amongst people, I thought it was common sense: don't be overbearing.
Don't give into peer pressure, mai boi.
Damn Straight
So I'm not lying, just dressing up my opinions. But of course I throw in a game I actually care about. Just describing the general plot around Sakura Wars usually goes down well with non gamers.
I don't really talk to people, so I don't have many opportunities to lie to them. If I do lie, it's usually about how seldom I talk to people. I say something like. "I talk at people all the time! My best friend is another person!" But it's just lies. All lies.
*sigh* I'm all for everyone having their own opinion, but it's a little disheartening to listen to someone raving over The Darkness, but then they look at me funny when I talk about Limbo, Shadow Complex, Alan Wake, No More Heroes 2, etc.
Just kidding that's impossible
My sister asked me if I liked the Kinect, I said hesitantly and changed the subject. I know what you mean, I didn't want to go in to a detailed rant about how I feel disconnected from the on screen character because it does most of the movement for me, if she enjoys the Kinect I'm fine with that.
One time in class my friend was talking about how she was excited for Black Ops, I didn't want to be a douche so I pretended to be interested in the game.
I've played all 3 of the Halo games, I kinda liked the first one, but I really didn't like the 2nd and 3rd one, I mainly played it because I never really get to play games with my brother, and it's always kinda nice bonding with him since we don't have much in common.
I use to play Dead Nation online with my friend even though I hated that game, he was living in a different state, and he wanted to play a game online with me.
Castle Crashers, this one is really more of a lie to myself I loved Alien Hominid, and I had been following the Behemoth since they were making flash games on Newgrounds. I thought everything the game did was good, but I found it kind of boring.
I really don't think that's too conceited. You don't have to go into a spiel about how fantastic Mario Galaxy is unless they ask further. They would be the ones in the bad if they judged you for knowing more depth about a hobby that you write about for a living.
Either that or I tell them I haven't really played it that much, so I don't really know. That works too.
I'm the type who will just nod and/or say "oh yeah? Awesome!" when someone says "ima gamer! I play zynga!"
However, with music? I tell anyone and everyone I know how overrated and shit The Beatles are.
Fun Fact I never played Shadow of the Colossus, and I want to try it out, but I've seen the game in action online so any experience for going in blind is not possible for me.
But it's not like anyone going to hold it against me for it.
And if someone does, I can ignore it.
While I agree that FF7 is overrated, I'm surprised by the amount of hatred it gets these days. FF7 isn't the best FF, but it's clearly -one- of the best. In fact, I'd only put FF6, FF4, and FF Tactics above it with certainty. I'd put FF2, FF8, FF9, and FF12 below it with certainty. I never played 13 or the MMOs (11 and 14), so I don't rank them at all. FF3 and FF5 are both fantastic on their own terms, but they also have relatively weaker stories. I'd say FF7 is likely better than both, but it really depends on what you want. FF1 is the first in the series, and, therefore, has all the attendant strengths and weaknesses. It's hard to compare FF7 with it meaningfully.
So, yeah, FF7 isn't the best JRPG of all time, and it isn't the best FF of all time. Both of those rewards go to FF6 (booyah!), but it's still a great game.
