When I hear friends talk about playing CoD (or some equivalent), and only CoD, I want to tell them they're what's wrong with the industry and go on about how there's so much more out there. And sometimes I do and feel terrible, but other times I just go along and discuss favorite gun in the game or whatever. It's a rough spot to be in.
I said I hated Phoenix Wright to my friend. I was lying. I mean who doesn't love sitting on a packed train with tons of people sitiing around and then shouting objection into a mic while people look at you as if you are on day release?

You're not alone Chad, at almost every single family gathering I have to put on a poker face and blindly agree that I love the same shitty party games my family enjoys. Also, when I meet new people and I'm making small talk, I obviously tell them I enjoy video games quite a bit, and I always agree with them that I love any given Call of Duty game they mention. Which, don't get me wrong I do play all of them, but obviously I have a sense to not make any Call of Duty my all-time favorite games.. I mean, have you ever tried to explain an RPG to anyone who isn't a gamer? It's impossible.
I lied to myself, saying that I loved Final Fantasy XIII even though it was really the worst in the series. I tried to love it, I really did. But I finally got the guts to tell myself it wasn't real.
But I disgress. I never lied to anybody else about that kind of things, and I guess that's why I never get invited to parties anymore.

At least in your situation above you could have said "I don't know, I've never played them. I've heard they're fun!", I don't really shy away from my preferences, but it was obviously not a group of hardcore gamers in a light social situation. Not the audience for gushing about a little sold game with terrible graphics but a very unique structure and presentation, yes?
Ouch. I've had to pretend to like Carnival Games, but that was only for my four/five year old little cousins, who I had to play it with. It was a painful thanksgiving.

I have no problem with telling people that I don't like their favourite game/film/band/whatever. If they dislike me because of it then fuck them because they weren't worth my time anyway.

I simply say that I either enjoy it if it's an average and inoffensive game, or that it's not my thing if it's really awful. If I've never played it, I say so. I then proceed to tell them that I'm more into other types of games. Most know what Resident Evil is due to the movies, though it sucks that many of them have had their opinion of it ruined due to their quality. Then again, many of them are dumb and therefore think it's a great film series. These people are generally the same type of people who will be at the movies sometime in the coming week to see Transformers 3.

I think Final Fantasy X was one of the worst RPGs ever made. I believe Twilight Princess is Zelda with all the magic that made the Zelda series so special removed. MGS4 had a convoluted and silly story that was poorly told... Resident Evil 5 was a complete raping of a once great series... Dragon Age was incomplete and incredibly sloppy at times...

Nah, I don't really lie about it. If I'm talking to a gamer who raves about overrated games like, say, Final Fantasy VII, I'll tell him that I think it's overrated. If I'm talking to a girl who tells me she likes to play the Wii, I'll tell her I don't own a Wii. Because I don't!
I generally don't bring up games around new people, as most of the people I tend to meet don't like or don't play video games. However, when I'm hanging with people who I know to be gamers, I'm always brutally honest about how I feel about certain games (and films, books, etc). I don't do it to be contrary, but instead because I know that there's usually a "Chad Concelmo" in the group who's probably biting their tongue about how they really feel. Once one person dissents suddenly everybody becomes an individual again.
No, not that I can think of. I think most of the people I talk to aren't into videogames, so I tend to keep things fairly vague anyway. The few friends I have that are into videogames tend to like the same sort of games I do, so I'm never really in a position to try and bluff my way into their favour. I mean, I've played games like Cooking Mama and suchlike when I've been babysitting my nieces and I've no problem admitting that.

I work at game store and sometimes I kinda have to agree with some customers about loving/hating particular title to keep my credibility and sell them something. Usually they have no idea what they are talkin about.

No I don't lie too often. I have weird tastes and am maybe a little overbearing in my dislike for some popular games. I personally hate Ico, Rez, Silent Hill 2 and every first person shooter ever. So basically people would have called me a troll anyways, so I might as well put it in the username.
I've not played Wii Fit or anything like that so I just say "Oh, is it goog? I should try it". It's good to be polite to strangers. I have played Just Dance a few times and usually say something like "yeah, its fun. You should of seen me playing it; I looked a real idiot!"

You merely went with the flow because saying the games sucked would have been fruitless. It was very much the right choice. Standing up and saying Carnival Games sucked donkey balls, would have been rude. In fact it would have probably hurt the others feelings possibly. So, it's never wrong to not be a douche bag.
No... I've never lied about video games, but then again I'm old and usually speaking to people half my age when talking gaming so my own likes or dislikes are generally just seen as senility if I don't like a game that they do! :)
I'm generally pretty vocal about my opinion (not just with games, but largely with movies as well). This might be why I don't really get along with my co-workers who obsess largely over World of Warcraft and Call of Duty: Black Ops Zombie mode (yes, not even the base game, just the zombie mode... I've been hearing about it non-stop for over two months now from the same group of people).
*sigh* I'm all for everyone having their own opinion, but it's a little disheartening to listen to someone raving over The Darkness, but then they look at me funny when I talk about Limbo, Shadow Complex, Alan Wake, No More Heroes 2, etc.

My sister asked me if I liked the Kinect, I said hesitantly and changed the subject. I know what you mean, I didn't want to go in to a detailed rant about how I feel disconnected from the on screen character because it does most of the movement for me, if she enjoys the Kinect I'm fine with that.
One time in class my friend was talking about how she was excited for Black Ops, I didn't want to be a douche so I pretended to be interested in the game.
I've played all 3 of the Halo games, I kinda liked the first one, but I really didn't like the 2nd and 3rd one, I mainly played it because I never really get to play games with my brother, and it's always kinda nice bonding with him since we don't have much in common.
I use to play Dead Nation online with my friend even though I hated that game, he was living in a different state, and he wanted to play a game online with me.
Castle Crashers, this one is really more of a lie to myself I loved Alien Hominid, and I had been following the Behemoth since they were making flash games on Newgrounds. I thought everything the game did was good, but I found it kind of boring.

I act interested in the hope they will return the favor when I talk about the games I like. I mean, would it really have been so hard to say, "Oh, at Destructoid we tend to deal with more hardcore games. There are a lot of amazing games on Wii that go beyond being mini game collections. It's cool that you're into what you've played so far though. *smile*"
I really don't think that's too conceited. You don't have to go into a spiel about how fantastic Mario Galaxy is unless they ask further. They would be the ones in the bad if they judged you for knowing more depth about a hobby that you write about for a living.

Not really. I tell them that I like games like Mario, Zelda, Bioshock, Final Fantasy 6, Deus Ex, etc., and while I get people who are like "You don't like CoD? I thought you were a gamer!", most people either nod like they understand me or in rare cases actually know what I'm talking about. Besides, I'm the guy that everyone goes to when it comes to video games and technology problems, so they better not make fun of me!
I tend to try to make a broad statement about the pluses of whatever game they're all talking about. If they were to talk about Mario Party or something and ask me if I liked it, I'd probably say something like, "Mario Party is a great game to play with a group of people!" It's not really a false statement, but doesn't really answer the question either. But it will probably satisfy them so they don't think to ask you more about it.

While I agree that FF7 is overrated, I'm surprised by the amount of hatred it gets these days. FF7 isn't the best FF, but it's clearly -one- of the best. In fact, I'd only put FF6, FF4, and FF Tactics above it with certainty. I'd put FF2, FF8, FF9, and FF12 below it with certainty. I never played 13 or the MMOs (11 and 14), so I don't rank them at all. FF3 and FF5 are both fantastic on their own terms, but they also have relatively weaker stories. I'd say FF7 is likely better than both, but it really depends on what you want. FF1 is the first in the series, and, therefore, has all the attendant strengths and weaknesses. It's hard to compare FF7 with it meaningfully.

I can't recall lying about liking a video game or not. I generally keep my opinions to myself at work, unless someone asks for them. You wouldn't believe how many people are surprised when they ask me about MW2 and I tell them it's the worst game in existence.
