Harmonix announces Les Paul compatibility, other goodies in upcoming PS3 patch photo

File this one under “about damn time.” It’s been a long time coming, but at last, gamers who own Rock Band on the PS3 will be able to use their Guitar Hero III Les Paul controllers with the game. I’ve been waiting for this moment since before Rock Band came out, and as someone who prefers the Les Paul controller to the Stratocaster controller of Rock Band, I’m ecstatic to hear this news. I’d long ago given up on the hope that I’d ever be able to use my Les Paul controller in Rock Band! This comes straight from a forum post by Sean Baptiste (hmxsean), Harmonix’s community manager.

This functionality will be added to the PS3 version in a patch this Thursday, September 11. The patch will also include the ability to export your Rock Band songs (aside from “Enter Sandman,” “Run to the Hills,” and “Paranoid” -- along with Tokio Hotel’s “Monsoon” if you’re a European gamer) to your PS3’s hard drive for use in Rock Band 2. Just like the patch for the 360 version, you’re going to need to update your game if you want to play any DLC released after September 11th.

Lastly, the patch will fix a problem with the most recent DLC, last week’s charity PAX pack. Apparently, there were “technical issues” with the MC Frontalot track, “Livin’ on the Corner of Dude and Catastrophe,” so users who downloaded that track or the entire pack found that they were unable to actually play the songs they had bought. As of yesterday, Harmonix had resubmitted the tracks to Sony; you’ll soon be able to re-download the tracks for free, although Thursday’s patch will fix the issue automatically without you having to download anything again.

PS3 owners, are you ready to RAWK?! Once I install that patch on Thursday, I know what I’m going to do -- I’m going to go back and try beating the three songs that have eluded completion on Expert guitar: “Highway Star,” “Flirtin’ With Disaster,” and, of course, “Green Grass and High Tides.”

I hate all guitar controllers except for the original Rock band controller... I bet you don't hear that every day.

I know i can't live without my gh2 360 guitar. It's good that the ps3 can finally join in on the cross compatibility to give them a better option on guitars.

Anybody know this patch is going to allow 360 guitars to work on PS3? I have GH2 and 3 on 360 and RB on PS3, it would be nice to have that extra guitar :-)

@Shade: Nope. As far as I'm aware, cross-console controller compatibility (say that three times fast) is impossible.

Impossible because of licensing issues? It's certainly not impossible from a technical POV -- the PS3 controller is a USB human interface device, and if the 360 one is anything like the old Xbox controllers, it is a USB HID that simply doesn't report its descriptors.

So, what are the chances of Activision allowing Rock Band guitars to work in Guitar Hero III? I know GH:WT and RB2 will have cross-compatible controllers, but it would be nice to see the same thing happen for GHIII.

@Shade: Hm...well, I know that Microsoft has rigorous standards for their peripherals -- all 360 controllers have to be built to a certain specification, which is what guarantees cross-game peripheral compatibility on that console. It seems like PS3 and 360 controllers would be programmed completely differently (different face buttons and whatnot), which is why you can't just plug a wired 360 controller into a PS3's USB port.

Because it's not possible now, it's obvious that this would require some sort of software patch (assuming it was even doable hardware-wise). But someone has to work on that, and unlike cross-game compatibility on the PS3, there doesn't seem to be much of an impetus for anyone to make 360 controllers compatible with a PS3 game (or vice versa).

@Necros: Well, that'd require a patch on Activision's part. Harmonix has been working on this for a long time, but I just don't see it happening the other way around. Harmonix cares; Activision doesn't.

@Samit: How about cross generational compatability? I want to be able to play GHI and II on my PS3 without having to buy an adaptor. Is either guitar controller backwards compatable yet?

@TheCleaningGuy: Not that I know of. That'd be awesome, though -- Guitar Hero II is the only reason I'm still keeping my PS2 around (my PS3 is a fully backwards compatible 60 GB unit).

About damn time!

I was so upset that I could not use my GH controller with RB with my PS3 as the night before were were jamming on my friends 360 so I thought it was fine. I was wrong.

Oh, man-- A week or so ago, Amazon had the Les Paul controller for the PS3 for 22 bucks or so on a gold box deal. I almost bought it, but figured I wouldn't need it.

Funny you say that, because I'm stuck on the same goddamn songs. Just yesterday I made it 85% through "Green Grass..." only to be aborted after derailing on the solo. I will be putting my heart and soul into beating expert career before #2 comes out this sunday.

I don't know, Samit, but I would NEVER be able to finish "Green Grass and High Tides" using the Guitar Hero controller. Why? It is the only song in the entire game that I have to use the high solo fret buttons. When you get to the end of the second solo, you'll see why.
