The Associated Press has an article up that's all about people like you and me, the so-called "core" gamers. I thought it was "hardcore" gamers, but I suppose that whatever buzzterm Nintendo comes up with is gospel. We're core gamers now, just like Mario Kart is a "bridge" title and casual gamers are a "blue ocean" or whatever pretentious claptrap smug people say.
Anyway, I usually don't post anything Michael Pachter says because professional guesswork isn't really exciting (plus he usually states the obvious) but this time, the industry analyst has coughed up quite an amusing bit of hyperbole -- apparently neither your nor I have any clue that we're in a recession.
The article is all about how "core" gamers are the backbone of the industry, and notes the irony of Sony and Microsoft trying to copy the Wii and expand its audience when it has a loyal and willing market it could instead be strengthening during these tough times. I agree with that entirely. "As long as hard-core gamers have a job, they will continue to buy games," states one market analyst. Pretty true. That's why we're gamers.
But Pachter's quote seals the deal: "They may be wealthy, they may be poor, but they have no clue we are in a recession,"
Mr. Pachter, with all due respect, I have a clue alright. I have a raging clue. With Free Radical shutting down, EA losing money and Sony axing jobs, I know very well that the country is in recession. I just really, really wanted that PS3.
Analysts? Possibly the more overpaid for nothing job in the games industry (some, not all mind).
To say that gamers are looking for a bargain now cause of recession is illinformed? When did a gamer NOT look for a bargain? They always looked for a bargain so they could afford more games, or more games and Peanut Butter M&Ms. Or Orange Soda!!!
Southpark reference ftw.
But seriously, I really did just buy a PS3. Now my Triforce of Gaming power is complete.
A residential builder, or investment banker with a huge 401(k), are going to notice like woah. A proofreader at a CPA firm who is still young enough not to have a retirement fund set up yet, like me? Not so much. In fact, I've been enjoying the lower prices on gas. And as for the "credit crunch"? Teeheehee - I just picked up that Sony card from Chase that knocked $150 off the price of a PS3.
Life is awesome when your job is stable and your credit is good.
FAIL FAIL FAIL. Idiot, I'm willing to bet I know far more about the recession than the 'average' person.
*goes back to playing Okami*
The Recession is here. Thankfully, also are 4 for £10 classics on the PS2.
...I-I mean, s-stealing as in shopping at Gamestop! Their prices are so low, you feel like a thief!
Oh well, back to buying video games.
Also, gamers are pretty fucking big consumer whores and websites like CAG make it impossible for us not to be impulse buyers.
But I know times are tough...
My day, it has been made. Thank you Mr. Sterling.
What a dick thing to say. I find gamers are being a lot more careful about what games they buy lately. But then again, Pachter says a LOT of dumb things.
Back on topic, Patcher needs to think things through a bit more before sticking his foot into his mouth. I'll get back to covering my ears, pretending the news media never said the 'R' word thirty times a hour everyday.
For the last twelve months.
BTW: South Park references & that headline pic brought a chuckle to my soul. Thanks.
