Happy 9th birthday, PlayStation 2 photo

Ah, PS2. We go way back, don't we? I don't even remember when I got you, though. My Dreamcast? Yes, fondly. Sega Saturn? Never forget. But you? I seriously can't remember. But I do know that your DVD-playin', blue-disc clickin', sometimes overheating Japanese brethren first hit the market on March 4th, 2000, 9 years ago yesterday.

Look at you: you're dusty, rough around the edges, and your front tray cover is falling off [cough]. But you still look good for going on 10 years now, I think. Since we've been together, we've worked through many a role-playing game, a few fighters, and a couple those silly racing games that look good but aren't really that much fun. It's been great, PS2.

I look at my game collection and see that your software dominates my shelves. You may be an old timer, but you're still kicking in your line of work, and I think that's great. 140 million or more sold? You don't say.

Despite a few problems over the years, you continue to be reliable and relevant. I appreciate that. Your younger brother has yet to show you up. You should be proud.

Happy Birthday, PS2.

[thanks, darkair]

I have had my PS2 since 2005, and the first game I got for it was Final Fantasy X. Four years later, I have over 80+ games for it. Totally worth the $150 I paid for it back then.

Wow. Even though it's 9 years old, I still play it and it still feels current to me!

Nine years... Is it just me or does it seem like it's been around even longer?
Personally, I didn't buy myself a PS2 until I think early 2002, specifically for Metal Gear Solid 2. Sure there were other games that I bought and enjoyed over the years since then, but MGS was the reason I finally snagged one. I bought my PS3 this past spring, specifically for Metal Gear Solid 4. I sense a pattern there...

Man, I wish I still had my PS2 with me.
Amd excellent console, one that certainly has an outstanding library of stellar games.

i laid my first PS2 to rest last week, killed by godhand. i think i got it in 2001, so it ran for 8 years, which is pretty good i'd say, apart from the fact that it slowly died for 3 or 4 of those years. it's been replaced by a slimline, which is pretty much better in every way.

i still think PS2 is probably the best console ever, all things considered.

I still play mine regularly. So many great games and they have aged A LOT better than the original Playstation.

I still the original PS2 I bought on the VERY FIRST DAY it came out. For that matter I also own the original PS1 I bought on the very first day it came out as well, but this is PS2's party.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY PS2!!!! :-D

I've had mine since launch and it still works (despite giving me disc read error on occasion). It's also seen a bit of abuse.. like getting yanked off it's shelf and hitting the hardwood floor... (yet it shook it off and asked for more!) I'm glad I saved up for my backwards compatible PS3. =D It now sits in the hall of fame near my NES2, my classic SNES, my Sega Master system, the N64, and miscellaneous old systems.

WOOOOOHHHHHH! The system that brought me MGS2 and 3 and God of War. I will never forget my ps2 era games. Which was a pretty small collection compared to what I will probably amass by the end of this generation. Happy Birthday PS2, you aren't showing any wrinkles. ;)

Ahhhh memories! This is the only console to date that I camped out for to get on release date. I remember going home and playing SSX even though I was so tired I could barely think.

So what console has the longest life span? PS2 right? I remember when I first got my PS2, it came bundled with Fantavision, a weird fireworks puzzle game, nice eyecandy.

Jesus. I can't believe that it was nine years ago that I spent 12 hours in front of a Best Buy to pick this up.

Bought my PS2 on launch day, stood in line for 14 hours. I bought the system, memory card, and NHL 2001.

The only thing I do remember about the waiting in line experience was:
- how disappointed everyone was with the lack of decent launch games
- A guy that was making grilled cheese on the motor of his Chrysler LeBaron (K-Car)
- The Tekken Tag Tournament tournaments that we played on someone's japanese PS2, powered by the K-Car.
- Tackle football on the best buy grass
- 3 Wendy's runs
- The fist fights breaking out after people tried to cut in line when Best buy opened the doors the next morning.

I was watching a DVD last night on it. When we got sleepy and wanted to pause it and there was no PS button in the middle. Or OS dashboard. I had to get up off the sofa and do something!

Oh, what a long way we've come :)

I got mine in the summer of 2002, after playing GTA3 at my uncle's. Over the years, it's been a great system, playing host to games like Shadow of the Colossus, Persona 3 FES, Disgaea and it's sequel, Tony Hawk 4 and THUG, Guitar Hero, Ribbit King, Vice City, Smackdown!: Here comes the Pain, Klonoa 2: Lunatea's Veil, MGS3, and countless others forgotten to the sands of time.

Thanks for the memories, 'ol pal, and here's to the possibility of a few more before the lights go out.

I also got my PS2 in 2002 and it's still running. It doesn't play DVDs anymore and takes a minute to read games, but it still plays them just fine. I remember I got Final Fantasy X before I even had a PS2. But my cousin brought his over and let me borrow it for a week and I ended up putting 10hrs a day into FFX and beating it in 4.

I won my PS2 from a U.K games website in 03. It has served me well, and has many miles to go yet, especially when PS3 BC is not standard anymore.

Persona 3 and 4 will keep me busy with it, and beyond that, the sweet taste of import games will satisfy me further.

@ZombiePlatypus: Ahhhh PS2. Got mine in 2004 pretty much for MGS3, got my PS3 this year for MGS4. Pretty much just like you.

But the PS2 is such an awesome system. I've got over 30+ games for it and just bought Final Fantasy X and XII last friday. Though I usually play new PS2 games on my PS3, it still gets it's use for other games that don't work, or games that have too much memory card time on them. Fantastic system.
