Ah, PS2. We go way back, don't we? I don't even remember when I got you, though. My Dreamcast? Yes, fondly. Sega Saturn? Never forget. But you? I seriously can't remember. But I do know that your DVD-playin', blue-disc clickin', sometimes overheating Japanese brethren first hit the market on March 4th, 2000, 9 years ago yesterday.
Look at you: you're dusty, rough around the edges, and your front tray cover is falling off [cough]. But you still look good for going on 10 years now, I think. Since we've been together, we've worked through many a role-playing game, a few fighters, and a couple those silly racing games that look good but aren't really that much fun. It's been great, PS2.
I look at my game collection and see that your software dominates my shelves. You may be an old timer, but you're still kicking in your line of work, and I think that's great. 140 million or more sold? You don't say.
Despite a few problems over the years, you continue to be reliable and relevant. I appreciate that. Your younger brother has yet to show you up. You should be proud.
Happy Birthday, PS2.
[thanks, darkair]
looking forward to spending more time with you
Personally, I didn't buy myself a PS2 until I think early 2002, specifically for Metal Gear Solid 2. Sure there were other games that I bought and enjoyed over the years since then, but MGS was the reason I finally snagged one. I bought my PS3 this past spring, specifically for Metal Gear Solid 4. I sense a pattern there...
SELLING GAMES IS LOTS OF FUN
THEY GET SOME THINGS WRONG, BUT THEY KEEP ROLLING ALONG
Amd excellent console, one that certainly has an outstanding library of stellar games.
i still think PS2 is probably the best console ever, all things considered.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY PS2!!!! :-D
The only thing I do remember about the waiting in line experience was:
- how disappointed everyone was with the lack of decent launch games
- A guy that was making grilled cheese on the motor of his Chrysler LeBaron (K-Car)
- The Tekken Tag Tournament tournaments that we played on someone's japanese PS2, powered by the K-Car.
- Tackle football on the best buy grass
- 3 Wendy's runs
- The fist fights breaking out after people tried to cut in line when Best buy opened the doors the next morning.
Lets hope the PS4 can follow in your foot steps oh great one, much love!
Oh, what a long way we've come :)
Best system ever next to the NES IMO.
Happy Birthday, you little beauty!
Thanks for the memories, 'ol pal, and here's to the possibility of a few more before the lights go out.
Sorry for trading you for the slim version. Sorry slim PS2 for getting a backwards compatable PS3.
Persona 3 and 4 will keep me busy with it, and beyond that, the sweet taste of import games will satisfy me further.
But the PS2 is such an awesome system. I've got over 30+ games for it and just bought Final Fantasy X and XII last friday. Though I usually play new PS2 games on my PS3, it still gets it's use for other games that don't work, or games that have too much memory card time on them. Fantastic system.
