I'm sure that Shigeru Miyamoto and Nintendo had no idea how much they were going to change the world with the introduction of the Nintendo Entertainment System and Mario. 25 years later, videogaming is a huge industry that rivals even movie studios. And it's all thanks to one turtle hating Italian plumber.

To celebrate 25 years of gaming, Nintendo created this cool little video detailing Mario's history. Not all of the Mario games get mentioned, but the important ones are here. Happy birthday, Mario!

What's your favorite Mario game of all time? Mine is between Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars and Super Mario World.

As in pure Mario gameplay, maybe Super Mario Bros 3, for the whole series I could sayyyyyyy... Paper Mario.

Happy Birthday, Mario. Maybe someone will get you a new hat, eh.

Super Mario World. Or Mario Kart 64.

Hard to say what my favorite Mario game is. Probably SMB3 or SMG2.

Anyway, 25 years! Seven years older than me, would you look at that.

I hope we'll see at least 25 more years of Mario goodness.

Ps. I'm two years older than Mario. But am I younger than Luigi? I feel younger than him.

An US anniversary video and Nintendo still hasn't announced that the Mario Collection and all the Japanese-exclusive bonus art and swag will be coming over here. Cock teasers.

I remember the first day I played every single one of these games... Man, I can't believe how much of my life is tied to Mario. I'd have to say though... Super Mario Galaxy 2 is probably my favorite Mario game of all time for now. Just so immensely fun and creative.

Super Mario World, hands down. Took the excellent SMB 3 and refined it to platforming perfection

Hmm that's a toughie, so instead, I'll break it down like this:

Best 2D Mario: Super Mario World
Best 3D Mario: Super Mario Galaxy 2 (SMG 1 and 64 being a close second and third respectively)
Best Mario RPG: Mario and Luigi series
Best Mario Kart: Double Dash
Best Music: Super Mario Galaxy
Best Powerup: Tanooki Suit

Overall, thank you Nintendo. May you stay around another 25 years to bring joy to my kids.

Happy Birthday Mario! Sonic may be my favorite series, but if it weren't for you I wouldn't have those wonderful Sonic games on the Sega Genesis.

But I love Mario games too. Super Mario Bros 3 and Super Mario Galaxy 2 are my favorites

Eh, not impressed with the timeline. The overall presentation lacks imagination. Seriously, Nintendo, if you're gonna honor your bread-n-butter for his 25th, then take the time to include all the major adventures. Where's Super Mario Land? Where's Yoshi's Story? Where's RPG? For shit's sake, where's KART?! And the end of the vid would be the perfect opportunity to tease us with where the plumber is going next. C'mon, we know you've got something cookin' for 3DS. Even the smallest clue would have given this vid the punch it needed.

This one's a swing and miss, as far as homages go.

Oh, and my fav is SMW.

My favorite in the main platforming series is Super Mario Bros 3, and overall that's neck in neck with Super Mario RPG: The Legend of the Seven Stars.

Mario's going to be around for quite a long time.

My favorite would be a tie between Super Mario 64 and Super Mario World. I sadly never really played SMB 3, so I am unaware of how incredible it apparently is.

Its probably a tie between Mario RPG, Galaxy 2, and Super Mario World 2 for me. For a series that's been around only a little bit less than myself personally, I still get excited when they bring out a new proper Mario game. Zelda too.

Best Mario RPG: Paper Mario 2 for GC and Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story for DS. Couldn't choose between the two.
Best Kart game: Mario Kart 64
Best Sports game: Super Mario Strikers
Best Power-Up: Propeller Mushroom (NSMBWii)

I would say Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island, if not for the fact that the game showcases Yoshi more than Mario. So, in that case, I'm going to have run with a three-way tie between Super Mario Bros. 2, Super Mario Bros. 3, Super Mario World because HOW DARE YOU MAKE ME CHOOSE!

Once again... I'd just like to be the jerk that has to point out that this is the 25th anniversary of Super Mario Bros.... not Mario. Mario has existed since Donkey Kong came out in 1981.

(Or Jumpman if you want to be an even bigger asshole then me. Although "Mario Bros." came out in 1983 so "Mario" still predates Super Mario Bros.)

Yah that vid was pretty lackluster, and I'm Marios biggest fan.The best game was "Mario is Missing". I found it very educational and the platforming was there.

It's a toss-up between Yoshi's Island and Super Mario Galaxy 2 for me. Depends on whether I prefer 2D platforming over 3D on a given day. *shrug*

Great video though. It's nostalgia-tastic!

I've always been a huge fan of Super Mario World. I'm old enough to remember getting our NES for Christmas back in the day, and I used to make a friend bring SMB3 over to my house so we could play it. I also remember the SNES coming out and seeing SMW for the first time and being blown away. The nostalgia is about the same for both games for me, but I can't help but feel SMW is how a Mario game should feel and play.

Super Mario World has not left the gba slot of my DS lite since I got it. The way Mario controls in that game feels the best for me out of all the 2D Marios. SMB 3 is a close second but I prefer gliding with the cape to the racoon tail. The only Mario game I've sunk more time into is Mario Kart 64 multiplayer

Hm...I guess I'll have to say my fav is Super Mario Galaxy 2. It might not have the same feeling of amazement of the first Galaxy, and I will admit it would have been great if Nintendo had done more to update it from the first game, but I'd be damned if it doesn't have the most polished platforming action I've ever played.

Now that could change. I actually (finally!) just got a copy of Super Mario Advance 4, and it's time I put Super Mario Bros. 3 into my list of games under my belt.

Also, I'm trying to come up with a senior citizen joke considering Mario's one of the oldest franchises to date, but nothing's coming up. Ah well. Happy 25th, you plumber! May your mustache never be shaved, and your cap never wrinkle.
