Happy 20th birthday, Game Boy

Happy 20th birthday, Game Boy photo

Ah, Game Boy. We go way back. You've been in my back pocket for decades now. We've been through so much together, too. Remember when I lost your battery cover? You had to roll bare-assed for a long time. Embarrassing!

Remember when you got that silly printer? Remember when we got that hip-worn add-on battery pack to extend your battery life? Remember when I thought I broke you but it was just your contrast dial being all the way down? That was funny, wasn't it?

Ah, we had fun.

You're now a ripe 20 years old, first hitting retail in Japan this week back in 1989. But you're still cool. You made on-the-road gaming cool. Hell, you made Barf Green cool. And you and all of your younger siblings still impress. And you did it all with only one screen, no color, uphill both ways.

You've touched the lives of hundreds of millions, Game Boy. You should be proud.

You're 20? I think it's time for us to split up. It's not you, it's me. What can I say, I like younguns. Well hello, what's your name? PSP huh. That's sexy.

Just picked up Mario Land 2, WarioLand and Ducktales today for my SP. All still as good now as they were then.

It's weird to think that the Game Boy has been around longer than I have. Even if it is only by one day.

Yeah, let's celebrate the birthday of a dead console and act like it actually lived for 20 years.

Also this is 3 days too late.

Heh, GameBoy is a few months older than me. I still own mine though, and it works as good as ever. I have to say, Nintendo does make reliable products.

LOLWUT. Someone celebrated early, and told them dirty things.

I have only played one game on the Gameboy, the Tecmo Bowl port. Fun times.

An era where it didn't matter if the screen was a shade of puke green, as long as it had a plethora of great games. An era when Sega vs. Nintendo ads were still at large and very little suing had been done with the ads.

What a blast those days were.

My original first version GameBoy still works and still gets a lot of use. Nowt else can play such fine games as Pokémon Yellow, James Bond 007, Mario & Yoshi and very butchered versions of Killer Instinct and Street Fighter II.
It's kind of sad that consoles these days aren't expected to live past 2, new versions of the DS come along every six months, and yet this GameBoy has been on the planet for neigh-on 20 years and is still going as strong as it was when it first left the factory.

Oh man, that thing saved me from countless boring car rides through Nevada and Utah during the summers of my childhood. Super Mario Land, Link's Awakening, Final Fantasy Legend II, Mario's Picross (oh god, PICROSS!) and so many others.

Game Boy, thanks to you, portable gaming is alive and well. If it weren't for that, I'd probably have murdered all the fat people and elderly that have ever sat next to me on an airplane.

my first console was a Gameboy Pocket, but it was still all wonderfully contrast-y and monochromatic. it still works well, too! ahh, the days of Dr. Mario and Pokemon Blue...

Hells yeah Game Boy Pocket! That was my first, too.

All I had to play for months was the original Game & Watch Gallery, but that was all I needed. I needed no other woman.

and The Genesis had High definition written all over it, at least Nintendo were not false advertising.

Celebrating 20 years of Nintendo vs Sega war revival.

Didn't get the original Gameboy. But I got the much better Gameboy Pocket in 1995-96 or so along with Super Mario Land. It was my first ever game system and game.

I owned a Game Boy and I was happy with it. Tried to collect the Megaman collection for GB but I couldn't find "V".

I don't have that GB anymore, but recently I bought another one, it's a charmy console.
