In Japan, many of the games we see tagged as SMT are not tagged as such over there, but with a different variation Like "Megami Ibunroku."
Both Persona and Devil Survivor started as "Megami Ibunroku" games as a means of showing a relationship to SMT, but not really having the same themes.
These days Persona is just Persona in and its looking like P4's rerelease and fighter aren't even being put under the same umbrella.
SMT main series games are apocalyptic, feature demon contracts and negotiation, have cyberpunk elements and muck darker, more violent themes. You're not a plucky teenager on a journey of self discovery, just a poor bastard fated with trying to decide the future and survive in a world that's gone to hell.
I could never get into the Persona games, but SMT: Strange Journey is one of my favorite games of all time. Give me some fucking demons and world-ending horror and punching God right in the goddamn face.
