Hands-on with the PlayStation 3 Slim photo

It's a good thing we didn't travel all the way to Germany just to watch somebody hold a PlayStation 3 Slim up on stage from a hundred feet away. We would've been out of town when one showed up right on our own doorstep earlier this morning.

Yup, we've got one, and Nick Chester and I have spent the better part of the day manhandling it. In more ways than one, it wasn't exactly what we expected. We've got a full unboxing video on the way for you tomorrow; but while that's in the oven, we'd like to hurry up and give you a closer look at this thing.

Hit the jump for photos, our impressions, and a detailed rundown of just what you'll be getting when you first pull Sony's new console out of its box on September 1st.

Sony PlayStation 3 Slim
Release Date: September 1, 2009
MSRP: $299.99

Ta-da. I don't know what you want me to tell you here. It's a box. One thing you will notice, however, is that the word "Slim" is actually nowhere to be found. Sony seems to want to make it very clear that this now IS the PlayStation 3. One and only.

If you're fascinated by the packaging for some reason, there are more photos of the box in the gallery to give you a full 360-degree look. Personally, we were more interested in what was inside of it.

Spoiler: It was this. The first thing we noticed was that it looked bigger than we expected it to be. Maybe the hype had gotten to us and we were looking for something truly diminutive, but as you'll see in tomorrow's unboxing video, that was our initial reaction. However, that only lasted until we dragged out the original PS3 and put them side by side.

Yeah, it's smaller. If you've never owned or had much interaction with the original, you're not going to be blown away by the difference. But if the monster you see on the right already lives in your house, this is quite a change.

Compared to something like the Wii, this is definitely still the fat kid.

Next to the 360, on the other hand, it's a much different story. While the Slim measures larger from front to back and will stick out from your shelf a bit more, there's no arguing that it's smaller in overall volume. It's still a bit heavier, but in terms of taking up space in the universe, we wouldn't say it's much more of a hog than your launch-era PS2 was.

Keep in mind also that the Slim's power brick is internal, so when it's all said and done, this will be taking up a hell of a lot less room in your entertainment center than your Xbox 360.

Comes with everything you see here! Console, power cord, one DualShock 3 controller with USB charging cord, manuals, and one ... composite cable. *forced smile*

The new logo appears on both the top and bottom, and beats the hell out of that Spider-Man font no matter which side you're looking at. The unit stands reasonably stable when positioned vertically like this, but if you've got kids or feisty cats running around the house while this is out in the open, the optional $24 stand might not be a terrible idea. Otherwise, unless you're keeping it on top of a tall bookcase in a region that's prone to the occasional earthquake, we think you'll be okay.

The only difference you'll notice with the included accessories is the new AC power cord. It's much smaller and more akin to what you used to plug in your fat PlayStation 2 with.

The smaller connection also makes it much easier to unplug and work with if you need to move the console around or take it with you somewhere -- an idea that won't sound so ridiculous from now on.

The back of the unit is more or less what you'd expect. An Ethernet port, kept company by HDMI, optical and multi-AV outputs, respectively.

One of our biggest complaints with the Slim is the location of the USB ports and indicator lights. If you already own a PS3, you know what a pain in the ass it is to plug anything in or see what's going on with your hard drive or Wi-Fi connection unless you're lying on the floor looking up. The lip that sticks out over the base portion of the console seems even bigger with this new model, so that annoyance is, unfortunately, still something you'll have to deal with.

The recess where the disc drive and power/eject buttons are located now has a dark, shiny, titanium-like finish. It doesn't come out too well in photos or tomorrow's unboxing video, but you'll notice a difference when you see it in person. Not silver, not glossy black, but somewhere in between. It's a slick new look, and we actually had a very hard time trying to get fingerprints to show up on it. That may have just been the lighting in the room we were in, but either way, it's a great improvement over whatever you've currently got.

Speaking of those buttons, that's just what they are this time around. Buttons. Gone are the silly "touchpad thingies that nobody asked for, I hope we're not paying extra for this, why did you do that" controls.

The PS logo no longer rotates. Gasp. Fire, brimstone, etc. You'll get over it when you hear how incredibly quiet this thing is.

Or, rather, when you don't hear it. This was the one thing that Nick and I were most impressed with. This thing is quiet. Scary quiet. "WTF, is it even on?" quiet. Nick thinks the optical drive makes just a bit more noise than the original when inserting or ejecting a disc, but it didn't seem any louder to me. Either way, once your game or movie is in there, the thing is virtually silent.

Keep in mind we were pretty busy with this today and didn't exactly get to jump into any eight-hour gaming sessions, but we certainly played it. You'll probably be as impressed with its inaudibility as we were. I'd venture to say it's even quieter than the Wii.

Final verdict? Shit's tight, son. Not exactly the most breathtaking piece of technology we've ever laid eyes on, but it's enough to make you want to trade in your now-fatass original PS3 once you've seen it in person. Will it be the smallest console in your setup? No. But it makes its predecessor look like a hulking beast, and it's lighter, far quieter, and less expensive to leave on all day.

There's plenty more where this came from in the gallery below, so feel free to browse through for some more photos and close-ups of the finer details. And again, be sure to check back tomorrow for our unboxing video to see the PS3 Slim in action, and probably Nick and me making asses of ourselves on camera as well. We'll give you a look and listen at what to expect.

Nice job, Sony! Now get back in the kitchen and publish some more games for us to play on it.

Seems nice but I won't be trading in my old PS3 for this. My PS2 died and I rather like having BC with my current one so I don't have an extra console taking up room.

Sounds great! I'm half tempted to buy one myself, just so I can have a PS3 that doesn't sound like a airplane turbine D:

Internal power brick? Why?
I would gladly put up with an external brick taking up space for an even smaller console that produced less heat.

I hate the new PS3 logo and IMHO I still think my original 60gig PS3 smokes it design wise. This just looks like a cheap smaller clone by comparison. The way its standing next to the Wii on the six picture only reaffirms my opinion that it looks like a prototype visually instead of the finished version it is.

That said, I have to have me my new toys. My boys already have one, I might have to create a new excuse from scratch to validate to my wife why I bought yet another PS3.

Sexy. But I kinda miss the shininess of the original, even if it is a finger print magnet.

Also, I like the fact that the power and eject buttons are actual buttons now.

Is it bad that I have a 60 gig PS3 with BC and I still want one of these?

I'm actually impressed that they were able to get the power supply in the console instead of having a brick. That's quite the feat of miniaturization there.

I am extremely tempted to trade in my fatty for this one. BUT, I will be waiting until at least Christmas to try and get my hands on one of these for the sole reason that with new technology comes new bugs. If I trade in ol' faithful (fat as she is) for this sexier console and it clonks out with some new horrid RRoD sort of thing, I will be kicking myself. HARD.

So that's my take. Want one, but hopefully I can hold out for fear of bugs.

I'm with the old man on this one. There's something about the new design that's just off putting. That, and the fact that the original looks more manly

Yeah, I'll keep my white PS3. Glad you paid attention to the non-rotating logo, but I think it's a little "hey this PS3 is not supposed to be standing vertically y'know?" protip.

I like the old school logo :)
and the touchpad "buttons" as well but to each his own.

Next to my 360 the PS3 is already super silent so no complaints there.

Good overview guys.

I love the new logo, and the new design of the PS3 Slim, or rather the PS3 as Sony would rather it be called. This makes me wonder if there will be a SLIM PS3 SLIM since this is apparently just a normal PS3 to them. :O

But srsly though, this is nice. . . I want one.

Seems they really designed this to be horizontal the front it really nice but the base of the console looks pretty ugly viewed from the side.

Overall I really like the new design and glad I didn't get a PS3 yet :)

It is a big larger than I originally thought it was going to be. Still, it looks much better than the original, and with the price cut I might actually get a PS3.

The 40GB and current 80GB are absolutely silent. Like an N64 in its grave quiet. So I doubt there's much improvement there with this new model. Though this 60GB behind me is driving me nuts it's so loud with temperatures what they have been in Seattle.

Lack of rotating logo ftl. Does Sony not understand what makes the Playstation brand Playstation!??!?!

Disappointed about buttons. I like not having to push on anything when the system is standing upright. And the power light should be up by the power button, lame.

Initial impressions: 7/11... which reminds me, time for a fucking Slurpee!

@Topher Cantler, Can you tell me if there appears to be snapping areas, as if for a face plate?

I have a feeling that you can customize this PS3 with a face plate, something that would go over the buttons (which is why they are exposed).

I see what appears to be three screw in points for mods but I can't see any of the other areas.

The lack of a shiny finish on the casing bugs me, it's like Sony got bored and threw the design together in a day.

I think I get an older model, the matte finish isn't my thing :/ the big button makes the design look really out of place too. It feels like the matte look is like an old PS2 design slapped onto the PS3 slim.

I don't know... I've got an 80gb one in my house right now, and that actually doesn't seem to be much smaller to me. I'd recommend the new model to anyone who doesn't have a PS3 already, but it's definitely not worth getting a new one if you already have one.

My brother just ordered one for himself. But, I think I will stay with my fat one. It has been next too my 360 for a while and it still is running quite nicely. Sadly, my fat PS3 is quieter than my Wii. Don't know why though.

The problem I have with it is that it's ugly.

The original PS3 has character cos it's so brutish and shiny. The 360 has a great shape and just looks compact. And the Wii is so cute.
But the Slim has that overhang and weird curves... do not want.

Shit I am pumped! Dude it has been SO long since I actually got a console I've wanted and didn't feel like I was obligated to upgrade to (i.e. Xbox 360) and I'm so digging this! The quiet part is totally killer for me since just recently the 360 noise is killing me (my dad was complaining about it waking him up downstairs on the opposite side of the house). Also, Heavy Rain.

Honestly I prefer the look of the original PS3. This new one looks too plasticky for me. And I'm not a fan of the textured matte surface. As far as matte goes, I prefer the matte texture of my MGS4 PS3 or the XBOX360 Elite. But still the improvements in terms of power consumption and noise reduction are just so enticing that I just might go ahead and buy it. Damn you, Sony!

Oh, and I don't prefer the old spider-man font, but I'm not digging the new PS3 logo as well. Wish they'd gone with the angular style of the PS2 logo.
