umm, considering complete lack of good exclusive support in terms of Vita i doubt we can call it anything more than a dud right now.
You might be a troll, but I'll bite.
No, it's not a failure. Just like the PS3 wasn't a failure when it first launched. It'll find it's way. I'm wondering if Nintendo can keep up with the times of tablets and smartphones, and make their interface more like Apple's or Android's.
Also, the Vita isn't even out yet to make such a bold prediction. And I highly doubt it will be much superior with that battery.
Yeah 7 million units sold in 7 months, is a real failure, isn't it? I can't wait to see how many units the Vita sells, in the same amount of time. Let's come back to this conversation a year from now and see which one is the real failure!
Seriously that nub looks awful.
@Tekbunny: They already have so far. Battery life and proprietary memory card crap. There might be more in the future.
@master snake we hae been shoved proprietary memory cards down our throat since ps1 days. I don't see why people are getting all up and arms about it now. However since ps3 allowed an sata harddrive while microsofts is proprietary, I didn't think sony would do that.
While I agree about the battery life as a problem.
but I think the proprietary memory is kind of minor problem initially but for the greater good.
I don't think it's a solely marketing & greedy move, yes they gonna gain money from it and compensate any potential lose in development for Vita but,
I'm more inclined to believe it's because of "security concerns".
The new memory will be Vita only and inaccessible by any other device on the market except for Vita unlike the old Sony memory sticks. That's the point, and to connect that to what Yoshio Matsumoto said in an interview as reported by http://andriasang.com/comy7s/ :
"- Vita in Control
The Vita has a built in app for transferring data between your PC and PS3. This is different from the PSP, where the controlling party was the PC or PS3, and the PSP was just like a generic storage device."
Correct me if I'm wrong, but that means the Vita won't be a slave and offer the card reader/writer to the PC/PS3 to control. The vita will be incharge this time, it will be quite aware for any file transfer and probably will block any unsupported file format transferring into the card.
This way it removes chances of anyone using the memory system as a way to hack into the PS Vita, or even install cracked PSN games into it in case someone managed to break the DRM.
That's an aggressive anti-piracy measure and going to hurt our wallets too, but I'm ok with it, I really don't want to see Vita games get heavily pirated like it happened with PSP.
The numbers were horrifying when compared to DS piracy.
http://www.siliconera.com/2010/06/13/psp-and-ds-piracy-explained-in-pictures/
I don't care much about piracy number per se but I care about the developers and their confidence about the system. If it's shaky, not much support we will see.
As for some games are going to require a memory card to save, as you said "why?"
cause we don't know the technical details yet.
Also sofik should just stop posting. You dont make any sense anymore.
Weird preview, joystiq felt the exact opposite.
It's not a bad buy by any means and it's not a "failure".
Only confirmed launch titles being those from Namco, which hardly show off the Vita's power.
You can bet Uncharted will be your Ocarina 3D for months.
Whose really going to be the failure?
Maybe I should have assumed everyone would think I was attacking the writer for no reason. I must have miscalculated something somewhere.
Steven Hansen is an awesome name. The Circle Pad Pro is a STUPID name.
Are we clear, now? ;)
@MasterBalls: You didn't read my Sound Shapes or Escape Plan Vita previews, did you? No need to be so defensive, Balls. We know you enjoy your 3DS. Though I still don't get why you're waiting on MK7 until Christmas!
@Jibberwocky & JQM78: Well, RE:R specifically doesn't use the touch screen for aiming regardless, so it's an option for people who want the dual analog. It has applications beyond FPS too.
Any way, yeah.. What Dakilazical said. Nintendo's making it so any cases (official or licensed) and covers (like Hori's silicon sleeve, and even the RE: Revelations Gamestop Pre-order hard armor) sold prior to this will be made completely useless because of this thing. Yeah, you can take the DS out, but if games are actually going to support this thing then why bother? Who wants to fiddle with it, back and forth, THAT much? So again it feels like they owe people money --this time for the extra stuff they bought to make their experience with the device more comfortable-- on the 3DS, only to be taking more from us.
If I happen to write a peripheral blog for the Bloggers Wanted this week, like I'd like to, then I'll give even more (actual good) reasons for me to be personally bothered by this... abomination.
As for what Evil Champ said and most of the comments after. In my mind Sony's already well on their way to screw up the Vita launch with its whole memory card woes. And I'm not even talking about the fact that its proprietary (even though I'm somewhat frustrated with that, even though I've known Sony long enough to see it coming) Sure, we all knew we'd need one, but no one was informed of HOW MUCH we'd need one -and that's not even considering that they haven't shown up for pre-order, and haven't been given a price internationally. Theres no good reason to wait to price these --REQUIRED-- items unless they know they could screw the pooch on it somehow.
HOW ON EARTH anyone believes the most uncomfortable setup for FPS and any game that needs accurate pin point precision in general will actually feel better in this case?
i am certain pad pro will feel right at home with monster hunter, assassin's creed, and similar action adventure\hack and slash games. for better camera control and fast movement, but not precision!
horses are used to a saddle too! it's not good for them!
Metroid Prime Hunters, in my experience, worked perfectly, but only because the control scheme was designed to swap between right- and left-handed layouts, with minimal button use, other than touch screen commands. Games with more complex button layouts, or a game that uses the circle pad as the exclusive means of moving the character, need a second circle pad for people who prefer holding the stylus in the left hand.
Some games need the option of a second stick, which is why the attachment is needed. True, some games don't need the option, but others will, ESPECIALLY for south paws like myself.
"I'll summarize: thumb strap!"
At least someone remembers this existed. Why on earth Nintendo stopped including it with the DSi and forward is beyond my comprehension.
Just because a vita will fit in your pocket dosen't mean you should put it there. You'll mess up the unprotected screen and joysticks
If you mean a built-in flash memory like in 16GB PSPgo, There are some issue prevent going with fixed memory size like that in Vita.
-First, It need an expandable/swapable memory , Some Vita games can be as large as 2-4GB, they cannot relay on fixed size memory alone, people will have more freedom with cards.
-Second one is the manufacturing cost.
for comparison let's look at 4th gen iPod touch, it was launched at $229 for 8GB. it's only 3.5inch screen and not even IPS like in the iphone4. the vita is 5inch and oled screen cost more to manufacture than LCD. not mention that Vita backed with more tech (double the ram, 4times the number of cpu/gpu cores, double the touch panel. game card reader and memory card reader, buttons and analog sticks assembly cost even more than 8GB flash used in iPod touch) it's an achievement to be priced for $250
They can add a 32GB internal memory but that can add something like $50 to the base manufacturing cost.
BTW 8GB iPod touch was cut in price after 11 months from launch price (manufacturing cost goes down) , it's $199 now but the 32GB still $299 never changed.
The 3DS on the other hand is once again being marketed as a portable Game Cube/N64 on steroids, but unfortunately Nintendo was so fixated on 3D output that they designed the 3DS to do the job of a portable handheld very poorly. People say "It's sold 6 or 7 million units!" but how many games have people bought for the system? In Japan Ocarina of Time has had a measured release so that it doesn't wind up in the bargin bin. Steel Diver and Pilotwings have bombed. 3D Mario doesn't move hardware, so 3D Mario Land is out. Mario Kart looks to be the only solid first party release for the holidays. But one game isn't enough to change the identity and software direction of game hardware. The N64 and GC were rejected by the mass market, and the N64/GC direction of the 3DS is now once again being rejected by the mass market.
On top of that Nintendo also realizes they've screwed up with not putting another analog stick on there. It's now feasible that we can get some first person shooters on parity with console games thanks to the extra analog stick on the Vita. And Nintendo realizes this, hence the band-aid with the extra analog stick. Of course they're re-releasing the 3DS, but the 3DS can't be called anything else but a trainwreck at this point. Everything went wrong that could go wrong and Nintendo should have known better because by now they have the market data to show that the N64/GC direction leads to decline and the GB/DS and NES/Wii direction leads to growth.
Furthermore, the 3DS has become a financial black hole for Nintendo, leading to their taking a loss for the first time in over 30 years. You can blame it on "exchange rates" all you want, but the bottom line is that the 3DS is now doing for Nintendo what the PS3 and 360 have been doing for their competitors now for the last 6 or 7 years.
Demolishing their profits.
never really considered the whole piracy aspect and i think you've made some pretty valid arguments. As someone who pirated the hell out of my psp i've got to say i'd also like a more secure system. Unfortunately homebrew and piracy go hand in hand so that does mean less of both but i guess that's the price we've got to pay in this day and age.
The NUB uses ONE triple A Batter. I don't think it drains the DS battery. But it uses a battery...
