Hands-on with Crysis 2

Hands-on with Crysis 2 photo

Like many gamers, the first Crysis was something I never really had the opportunity to play. Certainly not anywhere near maximum settings, at least. The game's ridiculous system requirements were a barrier I simply couldn't conceive of crossing.

With CryEngine 3 making it possible for console users to be able to play the next game, my interest level has increased exponentially. In a hands-on demo at E3, I had the opportunity to see what all the fuss is about and I have to admit that what Crytek has in store has some amazing potential.

What was most impressive about playing Crysis 2 is the range of options afforded to the player. Its dominant philosophy in design is to implement sandbox-style gameplay within a linear shooter. The demo I played was part of a level called "Central Station" set about halfway through the game in which you fight aliens with a squad to reach a subway station. Pushing through the streets of a city on the brink of ruin, It seemed like everything in the game existed for the sole purpose of giving me choices in how to approach problems.

As the nanosuit from Crysis returns, so does all of its abilities. That means having the option of going into a battle employing brute force or stealth, holding a defensive position or pushing into the midst of a fire exchange. Level design complements these powers with multiple routes you can take to reach an objective depending on how you decide to employ the suit.

Environmental objects offer their own wealth of strategic opportunities. One particularly cool example from my session involved a taxi on an elevated road and an alien on the ground below. To kill that enemy, I could use the cab as cover and shoot down upon it. Or, I could kick it off the edge and crush him with it. Or maybe cover it with sticky grenades and then drop it down, detonating as it collides with the enemy.

All manner of things can be picked up, moved and thrown. Metal crates can serve as mobile cover if you feel like moving them down the battlefield. I know there's a ton of other stuff I never even conceived of attempting in my time with the game and discovering all the possibilities will be a big part of the fun in playing Crysis 2.

The title also looks amazing. I'm not generally one to go on and on about the visuals in a game as they're far from my highest priority, but Crysis 2 is gorgeous. Everything is highly detailed and, apart from a minor stutter early in the demo, the whole thing ran as smooth as silk. That didn't change when I was handed a pair of glasses and told that the game should easily be able to handle 30 fps at 1080p on the console releases while in 3D.

As I said, it's impressive. Assuming that the same level of quality and attention to detail applies to the complete product, FPS fans should be very happy indeed with Crysis 2 when it releases.

Man, I'm sick of hearing how steep Crysis's system requirements were. You could play it on medium to low graphics settings on a PC you could have for 600 dollars at the time it came out. And it looked amazing even on those settings.

wowzers, 1080p would be neat.

What??? 30 fps in 1080p with 3d glasses? So I'll have 15fps on every eye? Even if it would run on 30fps on every eye then why do I need a "3d HDTV"? My current HDTV can handle this!

I have a feeling they mean upscaled 1080p. Very few games run native 1080p, the consoles just upscale it now which allows them to print 1080p on the box without being accused of false advertisement. Especially in 3D, if they're dropping the framerate, it's a pretty safe bet the native resolution isn't 1080p.

Game looks alright, I'll pick it up if I have the money, but this whole 3D thing is just too complicated for me to ever care. New TV, new HDMI cable, sync boxes, glasses, blah blah. I just want to play the damn game.

@Enzi: Thirty frames per second for each eye. Sorry if that was unclear in the post.

Conrad still has a point. What you said is true though, but why would I pay $50 for a game where I have to turn down the graphical detail to play it smoothly? If I pay full retail price for a game I want the full experience not 1/2 of it.

I have high hopes for this game. They said, and it would be logical to optimize the engine way more than the predecessor, so after my switch from PC to Notebook doesn't really effect the frames as much as the first one would do. Gameplay looked nice, few glitches on animations, but nothing special, and the enviroment is cool too.

Demo will be a must see.

@ Corak

The problem is that every PC game has settings that are usually higher than a mid-range PC will run. Take for instance a Crysis contemporary, Bioshock. I think that you would be very hard pressed to find a system that could run Bioshock on all the highest settings and not run Crysis on the highest settings. Realistically speaking, I'd say that 50-75% of the people who played Bioshock ran it on medium settings, and that those same 50-75% of people could also have ran Crysis on medium settings.

This article has one Crysis 2 image, and 3 from the first game, which has a completely different setting.

Not a chance it will be running in 1080p.

Likely 30fps @ 720p, like almost every other AAA console game.

I'm excited to see some PC screenshots, though...

Crysis 1 was a bunch of great mechanics and excellent visuals combined with unbelievably lazy level design and story progression. Crysis 2 is looking like it will fix the latter entirely, so i'm pretty excited.

Whats all this 720p 1080p 30fps nonsense? Jesus, its really not that important so long as its more fun than the first, which shouldnt be to hard.

Native 1080p might be unlikely, but don't write it off completely. A good engine could eke out 1080p from the consoles. It's not *just* about hardware. Few 1080p games have been released largely because it's much harder to manage it.

yeah i've always been a little disappointed seeing 720p after 720p in all these
"AAA" games. its doesnt matter much its just a little funny, i might have 2-3 1080p games and its probably not native and its probably cod games :(

wait, GOW3 had to have been 1080p right? that shit was beautiful.

According to a very recent interview, the game is being developed on a completely new engine, that is similar to Crysis's graphics.

Action games tend to funnel players through a set path, but Crysis is often more open-ended; there is a goal, a huge jungle and soldiers, and how you manage is up to you.

LOL @ 1080p for this game on a console. No way in hell. They mean upscaled, probably from even lower than 720p.

Is the third picture a joke??????? You surely realise it's a fake photo of REAL LIFE with a gun put into it. How embarrassing if you don't. The rest of the screenshots are not in game either, they are artistic renders.

Its 1080p @ 30FPS which wouldnt be much more demanding than 720p @ 60fps...either way i do hope that it looks good...because looking at those screenshots the game is going to give Killzone 2 a run for its money...
