Hands-on: Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 'Exterminatus' photo

Last night, THQ announced a new co-op mode for Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine. Exterminatus pits a squad of four Space Marines against increasingly intense waves of screaming Orks on a variety of maps. It's scheduled to arrive -- for free -- thirty days after the game launches, which is ... strange, to say the least.

I got some hands-on time with Exterminatus ahead of Space Marine's launch. As a fan of both Warhammer 40,000 and wave-based co-op modes, it's looking set to pretty much be my perfect thing!

As you already know, Exterminatus is a four-player co-op mode featuring wave-based combat. Fans of such modes will already know the basics at play -- each wave gets harder and harder until you either win or get brutally slaughtered. At its most difficult, Exterminatus will start throwing Chaos Space Marines (or regular Marines, if players are using Chaos) at the team, and trust me when I say that those guys do not go down easy.

The three classes from the competitive multiplayer mode are present, along with any unlocked perks, weapons, and ranking. Players can choose the flexible Tactical class, the melee-based Assault class, or the brutally ranged Devastator (my personal favorite). As with versus mode, experience points are earned with kills and accomplishments, which level up the player and provide further character bonuses.

Unfortunately (and quite possibly thanks to the fact we were using developer kits), my online experience was rather laggy, but I was able to play enough to get a good feel of what Exterminatus was like, and I quite enjoyed it.

Rather than each player having a limited number of respawns, the entire team shares one pool of lives, and the game ends if everybody is down before a new one has been earned. After a certain score is reached, another life is earned. Points are earned with kills, but are also won by completing challenges that intermittently appear. These challenges include taking capture points on the map or scoring a certain amount of melee kills within a time limit. Despite their simplicity, some of these challenges can be tricky and the point bonuses are crucial, especially when lives are thin on the ground.

Although it's not deep and engaging enough to sustain an entire game by itself, Exterminatus is perfect as an addition to a title that's already looking satisfying. As I said, I adore wave-based challenge modes, and marrying the concept to Warhammer 40,000 is a terrific idea. The ability to take your multiplayer character, complete with weaponry and perks, is a nice addition, and the level of challenge presented feels just right.

It's just a shame to me that the mode is, indeed, coming a month after launch. THQ must be confident that a lot of people will still be playing the game thirty days later, but I can't say I share that assurance. I certainly hope they are, but I'm worried nobody will be around to play it when it finally appears. I guess we'll have to wait and see on that count.

I shall certainly keep my fingers crossed, because I want to play Exterminatus some more.

Thanks for the preview, Jim, I'm seriously stoked for this game!

Since you already got to play it, I have one question: How does melee combat feel in the co-op mode? I've read somewhere that you don't get to do execution moves there, and it seems to me that without that gimmick the game's melee combat could become rather shallow, since there aren't any combos either.

From the demo, I can't say that I'd even play the game more than once, but adding free DLC to a game makes it an enticing purchase for a price drop.

Sounds great, good preview. I'll be anxiously waiting for a review.

The demo left a poor impression on me. Or maybe I was just missing something. I died within the first 7 minutes on both tries I gave it, then promptly uninstalled it.

Might still give it a rent if nothing else I want to play gets in the way, but I'm certainly not compelled to pay it much more attention than that, co-op DLC or not.

Sounds like Last Stand, but a little less in-depth.... Sounds pretty righteous.

Can't wait to see the review for this. My copy is already in transit, but I still have a nagging fear Relic may shit the bed in spite of the positive preview buzz.

Any words if it will have split-screen?

wait, so its already a thing, its already playable, and works, yet they are holding it back to release as DLC later on?

sounds like the usual DLC money making scam to me. or is it confirmed this is actually free?

fetusmilk:

It is free. According to recent statements, it may even be free to used customers as well. So, I legit think they just developed it late rather than held it back for money.

It's just ... weird.

Still sounds like so much tacked-on multiplayer. Devs need to have a long, hard (and most importantly, honest) look at their multiplayer plans before any progress is made, and ask themselves whether they really think it will do well.

Now, that's gonna be hard (because who doesn't love their wn product?), but devs need to understand that if their game wasn't designed from the ground up with multiplayer receiving equal or greater attention than single (CoD, Gears, Halo, etc.) they're not going to have their CoD-beater or Halo-killer. And if it's not going to get played more than a couple of times , it's just so much wasted effort (see Bioshock 2 if you really need an example).

Or hell, at the very least they could stop mimicking CoD wholesale. We get it, CoD sells really well. Don't try to beat them at their own game, do something new. Dead Space 2 at least tried to do this, so Kudos to Visceral.

On the upside, the max level is 41, as is the kills-to-win in deathmatch.

Because it is set in the 41st millennium guys!

So color me confused. Is this THE co-op for the game, or is this simple an additional mode being added after release?

free is the best price, I'll go back to it when it comes out and if it's good I'll stick with it. Surely having it release AFTER Gears 3 is going to affect it anyway.

I feel like there will be barely any people playing it console, but it should have a decent size community on pc.

I just downloaded and played the demo early this morning off steam: the games not bad by no mean at all, just no very interesting. you shoot guns, and use two attack buttons to hack and slash orcs coming in ur face. Graphics are fine , but i must say the art style is damn boring. I know that's the look and feel of the game, but everything is is just brown, except the really loud looking armor of the ultrmarines; dont really care for its design. Never knew of warhammer 40,000 story, but this games kinda on the boring side.

@elusive: That sucks... it seems it gets harder and harder to find a nice game to play co-op with my girl at home...

This is fantastic news, as a WH40K fanboy since before my teenage years I pre-ordered this as soon as I saw TotalBiscuit play it and the demo did not disappoint. Enough people I know will get this for a full squad in Exterminatus, so I just love these news as I thoroughly enjoy this type of mode since it is essentially Last Stand but as a third-person shooter.

Also, if it's free that's even better. Devastator Marine, here I come!

I just want to know if this will include a "fix" for all the online issues players on all platforms are having? The "Honour Guard" forums are full of people (myself included) who are needing to know. I want to play THIS.

Ant actual info would be greatly appreciated so I can know if I will be facing irritation or joy with this.
