Destructoid is gaming news, community, videos, and sometimes love. Take the tour or jump in with Facebook:

Hands on: Resident Evil 4 Wii Edition photo

Capcom made it very clear that they are the company to watch this millennium. They even scorned the rest of the industry for not taking chances and simply relying on sequels to keep the money rolling in. It's extremely ironic then, that the entire show was built out of Capcom sequels and spin-offs, including Megaman games that don’t even have freaking Megaman in them. So while they certainly talked the talk, they don't quite have the walking part down yet.

Case in point: the recently announced Resident Evil 4: Wii Edition. Ooooo, are you excited yet? After the ridiculous commercial was shown for this game, Destructoid had a chance to get all touchy feely with the Wii version of one of the highest rated games ever. Hit the jump for screens, impressions, and information about all the new content being added.

Wait, did I say "all" the content being added? What I really meant was "none" of the content, because there isn’t any. That's right; straight out of several Capcom representatives mouths (I had to ask multiple times just to make sure they had totally stopped trying), this game doesn't have a single costume, weapon, area, or mode added in addition to what was already in the PS2 version. Not a goddamn thing.

One rep simply said that the game had been "Wii-ified." So what is RE4 like with the Wiimote? I'm going to try not to exaggerate with this analogy... It's like driving through a mine field while some little brat covers your eyes and pees on the back of your head. Capcom is quick to defend the new control scheme by saying that you will eventually get use to it, there's really no point. The Wiimote does very little to add to the experience of RE4, but it does plenty to take away.

Most importantly, the Wiimote aiming creates a number of disadvantages that weren't present in the good ol' days of the Gamecube and PS2 era.  For example, you can now aim directly in front of your character, but since aiming with the Wiimote does not turn your character automatically, you will often find your own avatar blocking your sight, which defeats the entire purpose of the new over-the-shoulder camera angle that RE4 is known for in the first place. If this game had come out on the Wii only, Gears of War would play a lot differently...

Additionally, your aiming is actually less accurate with the Wiimote. Unless you studied the art of concentration with Buddhist monks, you're probably like Summa's caffeinated arse and make the targeting cursor look like a glo-stick at a rave. To make matters worse, the laser sight has been removed all together, which creates even more difficulty when trying to line up those long distance precision shots, and has been replaced by a giant aiming cursor that interferes with the gaming experience.

Graphically, this game proves that the Wii isn't so much as two Gamecubes taped together, but actually one Gamecube with a carrot squished inside it. It looks virtually the same as the GC version, albeit now with widescreen and 480p support, but if you have upgraded your TV for one of the REAL systems, this is going to look just as bad as every other Wii game out there.

To top it all off, RE4 was a rather long and enjoyable experience, but most gamers will get tired of aiming the Wiimote after just a short while making it impossible to submerse yourself into the game. With literally nothing new to offer anyone who's played the game previously, there is no reason to pick this version up. There are, however, quite a few reasons not to.

Sigh... This seems to be another port-a-potty (see what I did there) for Wii-ified controls. Chances are still goin' down, but I'm really hoping that devs put more effort into their games. As you said, they be doin' the talk, but seem to be crawling around :/

Gahhh! why arent the extras from the PS2 version included here? that was one of the main reasons to get this version. It couldnt be that hard to add it in. I was definately going to pick this up but now its a probably not, even if its a cheaper price. Think ill stick the GC one.
Why cant the developers do more than just port old games to the Wii?

Actually, this is basically the PS2 version with Gamecube graphics. Everything from the PS2 version is included. I reworded that sentence to make it less confusing now.

Yeah, I have to second "that guy above me" (way to hard to spell or say that name, man). I guess we have to wait until the final version, since I remember some reviewers saying that Red Steel's controls "could potentially be good" as well.

I'll wait to try it myself. The crosshair looks annoying. How do you move the view? With the stick? Cause that sounds like a great scheme. I'm gonna reserve judgement but stay skeptical.

You sound like you're sensationalising this is bit. Ends up reading like The Sun reviews games.

How does RE4Wii prove this at all? If Capcom isn't adding anything new to the game, they clearly aren't updating the graphics at all. This is just Capcom shoveling out another port, and does absolutely NOTHING to prove or disprove the Wii's graphical prowess.

SyphonBlue: While you're kinda right about the port thing, the Wii is a Gamecube with a remote, and maybe a carrot squished inside (practical application plz). The sooner everyone relegates themselves to this fact, the sooner everyone can STFU about it AJP.

I also read many previews and they said the controls worked well.I am so tired of control complaints from Wii noobs that cannot adjust(lack of cordination)to motion controls, but I also can't defend poor controls either and from the most things I read on RE4 it doesn't suffer from poor controls

Fine, you guys who didn't play the game and think the game plays just fine because FOX IGN or AOL ZIFF DAVIS 1UP said so, then have fun with it. Spend your $50 on a game that is the exact thing you've played before except with unprecise controls. If that's your definition of a good time, then I'm sure you'll be pleased.

Why does it matter what other web sites said? This is what we say. We were there, we're not going to sugarcoat anything because our big corporate head said to because he's worried about advertisers, we're going to tell you the truth. William and I are more or less here to tell you what happened and what we experienced so that when it's time for you to spend YOUR money, you do it wisely.

If the game worked well, we would have said so. We spent a lot of time there and a lot of time playing these games so we could give you the honest truth.

If you get it and agree with us, then great. If you don't, then, well, to each his own. Stop trying to invalidate our opinion just because FOX IGN or AOL ZIFF DAVIS 1UP had a different opinion.

And further more, that's why we, Destructoid, are here. We're not giving you the same view you get from every other Web site. We're giving you our honest opinion. We're not forcing you to do anything, we're just giving you another point of view that maybe you can't get anywhere else.

Diversity ftw!

the thing is summa that 1up who seems to hate almost anything wii likes the controls which is saying a lot.

Also i agree that diversity is good that is the reason why i checked previews from multiple location only to find you guys being the odd one out i much rather believe a lot of people than just one person.
Either way i really dont care as i will play the gamecube version of this game on the wii (when i actually get one).
Xaeser's Avatar
Xaeser at 04/14/2007 14:14
I see where you're coming from Summa, but a biased opinion is a biased opinion, regardless. I mean, you have shown that you think the Wii, as it stands, is crap. Obviously that's going to have an affect on how you feel about a Wii game. Unless it's a true masterpiece, you're going to think of it as nothing but another piece of trash. I'm glad INDEPENDENT Destructoid is here, but let's face it: I can't take an article written by Summa seriously anymore as far as the Wii is concerned. Is what he said really true, or is that the bias showing? I say the same thing after reading an IGN article. I know you can't help hating what you hate, but let's not kid ourselves: if you think it's going to suck before you get to it, then that's going to lower your experience with it. Just like you can't help hating Wii games, don't blame your readers for not taking a known Wii-hating blogger's opinion on it.
ZombieBite's Avatar
ZombieBite at 04/14/2007 14:40
It may just be me, but the article comes off as somewhat biased. Owning a Wii and 360 (as well as a PS2) myself, I don't consider myself a biased person and I will say that I see problems for the Wii ahead. If this is what the Wii's library is going to be comprised of, ports of past games with Wii controls (aka Prince of Persia, etc), that's no good. We need good exclusive first and third party games that take full advantage of the Wiimote for this to work.

However, I love Resident Evil 4. I don't love Prince of Persia. To see Resident Evil 4 Wiified is pretty exciting, in my opinion. Wii ports such as Prince of Persia generally add shaking/stabbing controls to games I've played before, and I don't want that.

But being a huge fan of RE4 and not having wanted to touch the PS2 version due to the inferior graphics, controls, and load times, I'm pleased to see this coming. Not only is it a true port of how the game was meant to look, and not only does it have the PS2 extras, but it has Wii aiming, my favorite Wii-port extra. I haven't felt the aiming yet, but according to everyone besides yourself, it's wonderful. Not only that, but it's in true widescreen and supports progressive for the first time with the original, superior graphics? And all for around 30 bucks (I'm not sure where you heard it was a full $50, but I know the Japanese version is cheaper and I heard this will be too)?

Count me in.

I haven't read around this site much, but I do hope the rest of the content isn't so opinionated, especially to the point where it comes off as being biased. Blogs are supposed to be compared to journalism, not angry message board fanboy posts.
ZombieBite's Avatar
ZombieBite at 04/14/2007 14:48
Sorry for the double post, but I was just reading the article again and seriously:
"So what is RE4 like with the Wiimote? I'm going to try not to exaggerate with this analogy... It's like driving through a mine field while some little brat covers your eyes and pees on the back of your head."
"Unless you studied the art of concentration with Buddhist monks, you're probably like Summa's caffeinated arse and make the targeting cursor look like a glo-stick at a rave."

Again, I haven't tried the aiming yet for this game, but c'mon. Unless every single site that's played this game is completely wrong, those are the biggest exaggerations I've heard in quite some time. The aiming makes it feel like you're blind? The cursor will be moving so quickly that I can't see anything but a blur, let alone aim? What makes you think I'll take another article written by yourself seriously again with completely obvious biased exaggerations like that? I try to take blogging as seriously as mainstream gaming news sites, but you're not making it easy. I've read message board rants from 12 year olds with more ties to reality than this article.

"I'm going to try not to exaggerate with this analogy..."
Right.

The cusor does move around a heck of a lot in those movies and Leon shoots at ghosts a few times as well....

I respect Destructoid for thier blatently obvious points on where they stand for games, if I wanted to read how every Wii game rocked my world and cured cancer I would go to Nintendo's forums. Every one has opinions and so far the D-toid team are pretty open minded but keep in mind they don't sensor it out for fan boys. I like that as it DOES create contriversy from other people and gets debates and arguments flowing (note every comment typed above and below).

Now I am a HARDCORE RE fan I own them all for PS, PS2 and GC (well not Re4 on PS2 or those god forsaken gun survivor ones *shudders*) but I could not justify re-buying this game for $50-$60 when you can go buy it used for $15 for PS2 of GC or new for under $30 and get the same experience without waving your hand around infront of you TV.

I enjoyed the Wii sports games and as soon as I can get my hands on a Wii I plan to purchase it; however, all FPS games I have played as well as racing ones blow baby chunks. My girl friend really wants a Wii and that my biggest influence as to purchasing a system right now.
