It's looking like it could've been a great original IP, tho.
If this would have been the initial trailer, they woulda had me at dante flying through an air born trailer getting dressed.
And the combat really looks like it's shaped up nicely, super excited now.
Biggest Offender in my eye is the "angel half" stuff. It just does nothing but toss Dante even further into Bad Anime/Fanfiction character realm for me.
At least P* is making MGR:R.
This is the type of thing I can't believe until I play it myself. DMC 3 has yet to be surpassed, IMHO.
@Article: I've been wary of this but this excellent preview actually got me excited for the first time. It is not the DmC I love, but it still sounds as though it has its heart. Hopefully the combat is good and the engine can handle batshit crazy stuff happening. Also this is just a wish, but I really hope Virgil is in there. Creepy Jester molester too. No matter what ill always have the originals, I just hope we get a sequel to those and that this is the start of fun offshoot.
This preview has a good alternate perspective in regards to the comparison between previous titles.
They liken the new game as an advancement in the sense that it doesn't alienate newcomers, but clearly state that it isn't actually all that advanced from a technical standpoint (directly citing the technical Bayonetta and DMC3).
"so Ninja Theory has turned the volume down on Devil May Cry's cruellest tricks and making a game new players can enjoy and older players can still explore, even on its more limited terms."
Personally, I don't care if it doesn't surpass Bayonetta and Devil May Cry 3, because that's a pretty tall order that almost no one could meet. I just hope the game is fun.
Mister Sterling sometimes. The other thing happens too, Jonathan Holmes being to nice that's scares the shit outta me sometimes.
By the way, the music is still god awful.
Also... the music is sex.
I have a slight issue with the article you linked to.
DMC wants to make some new friends and that means doing a few things the best of the best will hate. Forget Devil May Cry 4; the real Devil May Cry 3 sequel was Bayonetta, and nobody bought the bloody thing.
I like how DMC4 is just immediately discarded and they're just assuming another game with the depth of DMC3/4 wont sell unless they dumb things do... I'm sorry, "simplify things". Devil May Cry 4 sold almost 3 million copies (and had solid reviews) and is the second highest selling hack and slasher this generation, #1 being God of War 3, and the gap between DMC4 and other games beneath it in terms of sales is substantial.
That having been said, I'm surprised to see them scoring a game. Of course, I'll support the hell out of it though. So very happy.
You gotta take it with a grain of salt. It has salient points, but yes, I didn't like how even Bayonetta was discarded because "it didn't sell well". But still, it points to the simplicity of the new DMC.
I guess this attracts the new audiences, eh?
All in all, sure is mixed bag up here! Even the cinematic had me divided- silly naked antics is always a plus, but a crude parody of FOX News seems like it could be cringe-worthy. Feels like the more info I know, the less I can guess where this is going. Nothing to do now but play the waiting game...
However, I think this looks pretty good... and I trust Ninja Theory to make a great game, so I'll probably check it out.
Hideki Kamiya created DMC to be an atmospheric action game without blocks, knockdowns, and to have plenty of depth in the form of specific frames of invulnerability, cancel-able attacks, variety of weapons, and stylish animations and enemies. He did the same with Bayonetta. That's what needs to be expanded upon - not this simplistic streamlining.
According to C&VG, Ninja Theory has dropped the lock-on button in favour of an auto-lock on whichever enemy you point him at, which means his jump launcher is a one-button automatic on Dante's hard attack with Rebellion. Tap it to launch, or hold to launch and follow them airborne. What's more, the combo clock is gone - the only thing that can interrupt a combo is taking a hit or killing the final enemy in the room, otherwise you'll retain your rank even if you have to back off for a second or two.
Wow. that's a bummer. I'm a big fan of soft-lock systems, but not when they come at the cost of any manual targeting lock.

Thank you. This is exactly what I wanted to hear.
But, you're missing the point. The most important thing about any game is the attractiveness of the main character. And these bastards had the gall to change his hairstyle from longish white to short black. It's blasphemy.
Also: sarcasm.
will wait for the complete version and see what DTOID and Dale thinks :D
this game will suck ass.
Firstly, DMC 4 might have sold and reviewed well, but so did RE5, and people generally think thats the weakest numbered entry, and it's the same with DMC4. It was a load of crap. Bayonetta was MAD hardcore, and didn't sell very well despite being AMAZING. So they don't want a repeat of that. Hence this isn't a new IP, but a new DMC game, cause brand recognition WORKS, and isn't as hardcore as Bayonetta so that most people can actually rock it to it's fullest extent.
So yeah, they're doing what has to be done. And DMC4 was shit.
This looks interesting enough, if it doesn't do really shit in the reviews(and it's looking like it won't) I'll pick this up on Amazon when it's nearer the 20 quid mark.
