Upon booting up LittleBigPlanet, players will be greeted with several tutorials on how to run, jump, wave your arms, and mess with objects. These initial tutorials are essential, but not tedious. LBP has a wonderfully skewed narrator who makes the learning process not only helpful, but also short, concise, and delightfully witty. The narrator is like your dad -- except he doesn’t seem like the type that would eternally hate you if you can’t throw a football worth a lick.
But of course, LBP would lose 900% of its charm without the adorable avatar, Sackboy. Sackboy is the player’s conduit to creation and play throughout LBP. He is delightfully cute, animated, and customizable. His animated demeanor is completely controlled by the player. By pushing in different directions on the d-pad players can control if Sackboy looks particularly sad, happy, grim, or even nervous. He can also point and deliver wallops completely within the player’s control. SIXAXIS is also incorporated with Sackboy, as moving the controller around will move his torso, as well as his head. As usual, the SIXAXIS virtual controlling doesn’t translate that well to LBP as of yet, but the beta build that we have is one generation shy of the full game. Insofar as customizing Sackboy, players can apply stickers, items, and different costumes to their Sackboy at any point in the course of the LBP experience.
Single player seems to be the culmination of several themed levels designed to be platform-based treasure hunts. The real goal of the mode is to complete the level with the most points possible, which will then be uploaded onto PSN and compared with everyone else who previously played the level. The other goal is to collect as many items as possible, all of which can be used either to customize your Sackboy or within level creation. The few levels that we were given to run through in the beta have items cleverly hidden throughout. Oftentimes, I found myself running through the levels multiple times in a vain attempt to collect everything possible throughout the level. Some of the items are hidden exceptionally well and take decent intelligent thought to find. It’s very surprising considering the outward appearance of the game.

LBP would be nothing without its customization options, which extend to all the goals of the single player experience. The heart of it is contained within an in-game menu called the Poppit. The Poppit menu controls sticker applications, dragging tools, chat, character customization and all the tools for level creation. Players can create their own stickers with the PlayStation Eye or use one of the many dispensed throughout the single player experience. Goodies (objects and architecture in the game) as well as tools are dispensed upon the completion of objectives as well. Bringing out all this stuff is as easy as bringing up the menu and everything can be resized, shaped, and cropped in any desirable way albeit it occasionally takes a little creative constitution to do so. The Hearted menu allows players to save their favorite objects to be used liberally. So if Chad made an awesome dolphin, he could heart it, and use it to his heart’s desire in his created levels without having to go through several different blades within the Stickers menu.
The experience of going through all the Poppit menu options is numbing, but the tutorials actually help, and completing them gives you rewards in the form of new stickers and objects. Most importantly, experimentation within level creation can really help players to understand everything they have under their control. As for creating levels, it’s easier than what you may think with predefined palettes or blank backdrops as easy starting points.
From there, level creation is a delightful mess of things. Players can build towering objects out of materials that the game automatically gives you (wood, sponge, glass, etc.) or from items out of the Goodies bag. Customization of those objects happens within the tools menu, which allows players to animate, give sound, suspend, tweak, further customize, or make things lethal. Yes -- you can light any object you create in LBP on fire. The options are practically infinite at this point, and I think that the only thing that will stop anyone from creating anything is the limits of his own imagination. It’s hard to believe that so much is available at this stage.
LBP’s structure is based around a fully-customizable cardboard command center called the Pod. The Pod is the portal to all the various destination experiences in LBP, from exploring player-created levels online, entering into the single player campaign, and playing/editing your own created levels.

There are various multiplayer components integrated into LBP. The first of which is simple cooperative play. Up to four players can join into any game in LBP locally. It can be single player, online, or even level creation. It’s of note to mention that things get quite busy fairly quickly with two Sackboys running around, and it can definitely get confusing with more than three. Level creation can be fairly frustrating for the people not in the first-player position. They can’t undo changes and the camera only follows the person in first-player as well. It’s the classical cooperative platformer issue, but LBP handles it well for the most part. The camera can pan out quite extensively, and it pops in players who are lagging behind or are amazed that there are so many buttons on the PS3 controller.
Players can also jump into other player levels and explore what they have created online. Minor edits can be conducted in other’s levels, but otherwise the experience is all about what the level creator wants people to do. For the majority, the user created levels have been pretty fun and span a fairly diverse range of themes. Players can also evaluate other’s levels by applying neat little tags like “Short,” “Awesome," etc. Right now I’m having a hard time seeing how these tags affect the way the levels are presented in the long-term, but it does serve to raise the excellent level above the trashy and standard.
There are a billion things that can be said about the LBP beta. It has a brilliant presentation, wonderfully vibrant visuals, superb texturing, delightful music, great controls, and an intuitive creation system. The game is packed with nuance and I’m guessing that it can be enjoyed for some time. If the beta is any indication of the final product, then LittleBigPlanet has “Game of the Year” stickered all over it.
No matter how much I don't like the PS3, I would want to play this for HOURS!!!
Yeah, I'm still not diggin' this game.
I still dont know the point. People make levels. Is there more to it? I hate YouTube and anything of that nature so maybe it's just not for me.
I love the level creator... I poured like eight hours into making a level yesterday, just experimenting with all of the different tools and the different effects that can be achieved by using them. Playing other levels is cool, but the real fun for me is in creating levels.
nosedive: I've played some extremely impressive levels created by players. A bank heist level in particular really stood out. Super fun. I've even been Duckroll'd AND Rickroll'd.
You just convinced me to buy a PS3... damnet.
I must have entered a dozen contests for a LBP beta code and NOTHING!!! Who do I have to fellate to get a beta code dammit?
I'll get it and I'm sure it will be cool. I just don't follow the hype and I don't really see it either.
LBP is overrated and over-hyped. That's all I'm saying. And yes, I have tha beta, so I have first-hand experience.
Rickroll'd in LBP?
I can't wait for this game!
LBP is too slow for my taste and really overrated. Only thing going for it is Sackboy.
Looks neat, but I don't have the money to get it opening day...
definitely Game of the year
But could well be GAME OF THE FOREVER
I played the BETA and it is the second coming of MESSIAH
I've tried desperately to get into this beta but failed. I've been watching a lot of LBP beta videos on youtube and saw some really impressive things. Someone even created a transformer that actually transforms from a car to a robot and back again with the flick of a switch. I'm really looking forward to this game.
Game of the Century. The beta is the most amazing thing I've played all year.
Do not want.
A charming Narrator? Are you an uttter fool or just to american its STEVEN (MOTHER FUCKING) FRY!
This might be just enough and in combination with all the otehr games to make me get a PS3
@ Pew
Yep, that sums it up.
I've had a lot of fun playing the beta, putting rockets onto just about everything never got old. Some of the created levels are brilliant, I've already seen levels based on Super Mario Brothers, Sonic The Hedgehog and the great Metal Gear Solid. With the full release having even more stuff I'd spend hours and hours creating stuff. Plus the busiest man in the world, Stephen Fry is on commentary, couldn't have picked a better guy for the job
I've seen Super Mario, Halo 3, and LittleBigPenis levels on YouTube.. I guess I shouldn't go spoiling it for myself, but, I just wasn't that impressed coz I like faster paced stuff.
..And I'm a guy that usually goes for what my g/f thinks is cute, (Relakkuma, Hello Kitty).
This is a platform game that has many levels already made. It's not a "build your own game" game, it has that in it, but it is a platform game. This game makes me wish I had a PS3.
If you are in the Beta then definitely check out the bank heist (part 1) and the extremely fun (part 2).
the game is extremely fun but one issue stood out for me is the jumping ability of sackboy. it is very floaty, not as tight as say the mario jumps in SMB. When trying to jump over a gap you sometimes slip and fall down. and when running near a gap and trying to stop or go the other direction, sackboy tends to walk a little further than intended and ends up falling. This is the only issue I had with the game.
But what I have seen from the user generated content will shut any fanboy up.
The creativity of some users is astounding:
- one mission lets you enter a button combination by dragging dice on the floor.
- another mission let's you use a crane to carry boxes into a hole.
- another mission allows you to drive a rocket powered sled.
- there is also two hunted houses that I played in and found extremely fun (in one of them you have to search for the guy's pants, which was funny). Even more fun than the one already in the Beta.
and this is just the beta. I can't imagine how explosively awesome the game will be when millions of people start making creative levels.
Unbelievable game. This preview is on the money but no amount of a preview ot review will do the game justice. You have to play the game yourself and soak it in. Only then will you realize why the game is a winner.
If I were to sum it up in two words it would be Nintedoesque and intuitive. Even though I'm in the Beta I still can't wait for the retail copy to hit with even more tools and secrets to uncover. Sony's got themselves a winner.
Slow !?!
I wouldn't call Wipeout HD launch level and the Roller-coaster one, Slow.
If any thing they are fast and dangerous.
I've been playing the beta non stop. It's a lot of fun when you have 3 other people in your party. There are already tons of great levels that have been created. The creation aspect is really addicting; I'm working on a few levels myself. I can't wait to get my hands on the full game.
I had a lot of fun collecting everything in the beta last night. Just so you know there's more items to get if you 100% a level and do it without dieing (doesn't have to be in the same run). doing that will get you various pirate outfits. I had fun with the created levels as well, the MGS level was pretty fun, and funny.
My main issue with the beta right now is the Playstation network and the beta servers. I know it's a beta, and I'm assuming the main reason for the beta is to stress the servers, so they can make sure they're working perfectly at launch. But when the servers aren't working you can't access a lot of local things, undo in create mode, and it tends to crash. That said it's beta, and the server issues shouldn't be there on launch.
THIS GAME IS TO SLOW I WANNA GO PLAY SONIC UNLEASHED AND GEARS OF WAR THOSE GAMES ARE FOR REAL MEN.
I wasn't expecting much, but it's pretty fun.
My sackboy is like Jamie Hyneman, Awesome? Myth Confirmed
I love this beta. If they fixed the lag it'd be great as is, I'm excited for the whole package.
I could play this for months but it won't make me buy a ps3. not yet at least.
Woo woo, first game I buy for my PS3 since I bought the thing...
The game seems rather dull. All you ever really hear about this game is user generated content and how pretty it is -
the actual game comes across like some sort of simplistic early 80s arcade platformer where you just jump around the screen looking for some arbitrary item, thus letting you do it all again in another environment.
I hope its really good, the PS3 needs some games worth playing, but I don't think this will be the killer app everyone is hyping it to be.
hey XBots stay off OK
LBP is better than all games on x360
accept it and move on or rather have some time with RROD since there might not be anything worth playing on x360
LBP is not just killer app. it kills x360
Gears 2 look like a wii game
I would have Resistance 2 over Gears 2 anyday
Gears 2 is just for Xbots. No one wants it
meh waste of time
OP'S A FAG
im gonna try to shake sackboys head so hard it comes off
I haven't played a game this charming since I first played Banjo Kazooie. In fact, lbp is the most charming game I have ever played in my entire life! Call me a retarded fanboy if you will, but I'm serious. Too bad we don't get to keep our levels after beta. So much potential...
In agreement with others - way to neglect mentioning Stephen Fry by name! No, seriously, sort it out.
Other than that, excellent 'preview' - haven't read a bad thing about it yet - totally psyched!
It's really charming, but the uncertainty about whether or not levels will be transferred over to the actual game has kinda made me hold off on playing it. I WILL be getting it when it actually comes out, though, since what I've played, I've really enjoyed.
I do wish you could make Sackboy do more stuff. Like, give him a shooter or something. But, there's plenty of creative stuff to do with it as is, so I shouldn't complain too much.
LBP = GOTY 2008
LOUD NOISES!!!!!
Also wasim gtfo of my destructoid you kretin.
@wasim: Lol. Just shut up, man.
This looks more awesome every time I see it. Soooo glad that the wait is almost over.....
I'm gonna try this out in a bit, it's downloading now. I'm surprised I won a key, can't wait!
@Wasim: go die in a fucking fire already. No one said anything. You're embarrassing yourself by attempting to suck D-Toid's proverbial cock by agreeing with everyone by thinking that it's awesome. Go die.
Anyway, I really don't see what's so awesome about the game besides creating levels. Perhaps it's something I have against platformers (most tend to turn me off; always have, always will). The game looks incredibly cute, polished and inviting, but I don't know if that's enough.
Are there any other opportunities for beta keys left out there? I know it's over soon and the 21st is right around the corner but I'd love a chance to play early.
@wasim
Believe it or not, not everyone who owns a PS3 gives a crap for LBP. I own all three "next-gen" consoles and Gears doesn't really hold my intrest either. So take your "fanboy" bias and save it for some other sites, because frankly who gives a crap on what you think here.
This is a shoe in for Hype of the Year. Take a step back for a minute. It's pretty much the same game we've played for years with user generated content and a physics engine. Sure, it may be charming and a great laugh but it's not the next best thing after sliced jesus!
This game reaks of Halo Fever. I'm not saying it sucks but is this going to be full price? Because putting it up to some other titles it doesn't feel right.
When it comes down to it its just nice, its a nice game with a cute feel and room to breathe thanks to user generated content.
Might have to pick up a PS3 for this depending on how the final product turns out.
The game looks fine, but I most certainly do not welcome gushing language in hands-on previews of a beta product. Lots of subjective adverbs and adjectives make me nervous.
